  • When Paddy's plan to runaway is foiled by this single line:
I didn't get the chance to runaway. He left first.
  • The ending is so bittersweet when his father, after walking out, returns for chrismas eve and greets his ten year old son like a grown man and shakes his hand. It symbolises how he has had to grow up suddenly and lose his childhood but also signals the end of his growing up process and, as this book is a Coming of Age Story, the book ends.
    - How are you?
His hand felt cold and big, dry and hard
    - Very well, thank you
    THE END
