Tear Jerker / 91 Days

Go To

Day 1 — Night of the Murder

  • How a young Angelo had to watch his entire family be brutally murdered.
  • When an older Corteo and Angelo reunite, the former informs the latter about his mother's passing. Angelo's response? It was good, since he won't have anyone holding him back. That one line shows how much Angelo has changed.

Day 2 — Phantom of Falsehood

  • Vanno seeing the dead body of Tronco, a member of the Vanetti family. You can tell he wants to scream, but he can't do anything yet.
  • Vanno's death.

Day 3 — Where the Footfalls Lead

  • Before Nero and Avilio move out onto the road, they visit Vanno's funeral.
    • When Nero tells him to wait in the car, Avilio looks back to see Nero trying to keep his emotions from showing but is too pained by his friend's death and breaks down in tears.

Day 4 — Losing to Win, and What Comes After

  • When Nero and Avilio are talking about their pasts, Avilio brings up the question what his first job was. It was the hit job on the Lagusa family.
    • The way he remembers his past shows that he isn't proud of what he did.
Nero: I had to lean on some mooch who was nickle and dimin' the family. I was fourteen. What was his name...? Lagusa, I think.
Avilio: Solo job, all by yourself?
Nero: Nah. Includin' me, there was four of us. As first jobs go, it was... bad.
  • After Goliath's assassination fails and he gets shot to death, the pet dog stays by his master's side. The expression it makes when it looks back is heartbreaking.

Day 5 — Blood Will Have Blood

  • Corteo tries to talk Avilio out of pursuing his revenge as it becomes more dangerous and that they should both run while they have a chance. Avilio refuses and reveals his reason.
Corteo: If we stay here, we'll die! Isn't your life worth more than some revenge?!
Avilio: You've got it backwards, Corteo. If I abandon my revenge now, I lose my only reason for living.

Day 7 — A Poor Player

  • As Fio attempts to end the feud between her brothers, Frate is reluctant to try and make up for what he almost did to Nero saying that it was for the good of the family. Nero retaliates by calling out on his brother's cowardice and for giving in too easily to the Galassia family. It gets to the point where Fio delivers a big slap to Frate for suggesting that it would've been better if Nero had died after all.
Fio: You're both the same. What "family" are you even talking about?! Brothers killing each other... What kind of family is that?! I don't care about that stuff!! I just don't want to see brothers... to see family killing each other. No matter what.
  • As Ronaldo attempts to leave to confront Nero in a private meeting after the attempted assassination on both him and Frate, Fio notices he's taking a gun with him. She received a bouquet and a hidden message inside from Avilio, possibly implying that Ronaldo would kill Nero.

Day 8 — Behind the Curtain

  • After Avilio agrees to Nero's plan of taking out Delphy's family (which includes his 4-year-old daughter), Corteo call him out on taking his revenge to such lengths he would hurt innocent people. But Avilio's response? He throws some money to Corteo to use for medical and school and promptly tells his childhood friend to stay out of his life. Corteo throws the cash at Avilio's back and yells that it was Avilio who came to Corteo in the first place. The friendship between the two has hit an all time low.
  • Delphy's horrified reaction to hearing the car with his wife and daughter explode. Luckily, they were alive... but the fact that Vanettis went to such lengths to stop him, prompts him to give up the investigation.
  • Corteo's Beware of the Nice Ones moment at the end of this episode is truly disturbing and at the same time heartwrenching to watch.

Day 9 — Black and Deep Desires

  • Things have gotten much more worse for Corteo since the last episode. When he tries to leave the city he's immediately caught by the Vanettis who take him back to their base for interrogation. He gets beaten by them for hours only to get kidnapped during this and used as a hostage against his own friend who he's recently had a bad fight with. On top of all that, it seems less unlikely that Avilio will fulfill the conditions of exchanging Corteo's life for Nero's. Things are looking grim for Corteo.

Day 10 — Proof of Good Faith

  • The entire episode could count as one big tearjerker. First of all, Angelo and Corteo decide to keep a low profile and thus go live together for a while in Angelo's appartment. The happy music and montage, with them going shopping together and sharing a cup of coffee while smiling, is heartbreaking to see. But oh, it doesn't stop there. When Angelo returns to the Vanetti Manor, he is suspected of betrayal by Barbero, and Corteo arrives to protect Angelo and gets beaten up in the process. Nero then gives a gun to Angelo, asking him to kill Corteo to prove his loyalty. As they are together, Corteo looks at peace and tells Angelo that they'll always be brothers, while Angelo cries. After shooting his best friend, Angelo smiles and simply says "I'll see you soon." He most likely plans on pulling a Murder Suicide.
    • Their final conversation before Avilio shoots him.
Avilio: Why did you come back?
Corteo: Ganzo said that you were in danger. But even if he hadn't, it would still end the same way. Either way, I'd end up... You can use that gun to clear up their suspicions of you. No one will get in your way after that.
Avilio: (Voice wavering) I am here to take revenge. It’s not done yet.
Corteo: It’s been a crazy ride, hasn’t it? Has it really only been three months since you came back to this town? But I’m glad I got to see you again.
Avilio: (Lamenting) Why? Why did you come back?
Corteo: Angelo... That’s because we’re... (Holds out his hand and waves his signature goodbye)
      (gunshot)
Angelo: Because we’re brothers, right? I’ll see you soon.

Day 11 — All For Nothing

  • As the name suggests, this episode is one sad event after another. The point where the tale of revenge becomes a tragedy.
  • In a quiet moment between Nero and Vincent, the latter is in his bed recounting his numbered days and then begins to reminisce about his past and recalls the night of the hit on the Lagusas. He confesses how he regrets having to kill his own best friend, Testa and his family and that maybe there could have been another way. Nero tells him everything had been for their family and that he will do whatever it takes to protect it.
    • Vincent's confession of guilt to Nero.
Vincent: Years ago, I killed my best friend and his family with my own hands. If I hadn’t killed Testa then, the family would have been swallowed up by the Galassias. All the seven years then, that’s what I’ve kept telling myself. But, looking back now, I wonder if there might have been another way. If, maybe, I didn’t kill him. That’s all I think about.
Nero: Dad. The Vanetti name is more important than anything. More than friends. More than parents or siblings. I’m ready to do what I must.
  • When Avilio is in his room alone he begins talking to himself, asking why he did this quest for revenge in the first place. He pours himself two glasses of alcohol and at the end of his monologue he imagines Corteo sitting across from him and smiling.
Angelo: I’m back. I’ve been waiting for this day for so long. Ah… But have I really? I can’t even tell anymore. What did I come back here for? What have I been killing for? Well, Corteo? Tomorrow, it all ends.
  • Angelo reveals his true goal to Vincent by taking the life of the Don Galassia which would bring the Vanettis to ruin by having the Galassias become their enemy and kill them all off. Nero runs to his father’s aid when he finds him barely standing and coughing up blood. He says these final words to his son before his death.
Vincent: Nero… It’s over. It was all for nothing.
    • Nero’s reaction makes it worse. He holds onto his father’s dead body as the reality sets in and weeps tears for him, unable to do anything else. Then he glares in anger realizing who was responsible for all of this disaster.

Day 12 — Slipping Through the Dirty Sky

  • Nero and Angelo finally confront each other over everything that's happened midway through the episode, while camping out.
    • The latter remarks that he had hoped that after finally getting his revenge, he would find a reason to live again. But there was nothing left. He bitterly remarks that it was "all for nothing."
    • Nero refuses to accept that answer, demanding what all the deaths of his closest friends and family were for, all while punching Angelo in the face and almost breaking in tears. At which point the latter's stoic façade finally breaks and Angelo begins to cry, telling him that if Nero wanted to prevent this from happening, then he should have killed Angelo all those years ago. It's at this point both Nero and the audience realize that Angelo has been trying to move past his family's deaths for seven years, but he cannot let them go, and he probably never will. In many ways, it would have been kinder if Nero had killed him that night, as it would have saved him from his Empty Shell of an existence.
