Tear Jerker / Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Go To

  • "My Love, My Life." We see young Donna bringing Sophie for her christening, and then flashforward to Sophie bringing her own son to his... and Sophie sees her mother's spirit there with her. Who didn't tear up at seeing Meryl Streep in the role again?
  • Donna's furious heartbreak after finding out Sam was engaged. Made worse by the fact that he is truly contrite, and tried to come back and make it up to her... but we all know how that turned out.
  • Rosie and Bill crying and making up in their grief for Donna.
  • "I've Been Waiting for You." A very bittersweet moment, which has Sophie performing this song with Rosie and Tanya, combined with clips of Sofia helping Donna give birth to Sophie. Fans of the original movie will outright bawl their eyes out. If the first film is right, then Sofia is Bill's great-aunt.
  • If the timeline is to be believed, then Donna died at the age of forty four.
  • Sam, during the Dancing Queen number, can be seen calling Sophie "our girl" to Bill and Harry.
  • Sam's brief, unaccompanied reprise of "SOS" as he opens a photobook of pictures he took of Donna around the time they first met.
    • Even worse for those who know: Brosnan's first wife also died young. He KNOWS how his character feels.
  • Harry's heartbroken verse in "Why Did It Have To Be Me?" after chasing down Donna and finding her happily singing and dancing and flirting with Bill, only one day after she and Harry got together.
Men are the toys in the game that you play,
When you get tired, you throw them away.
    That's only natural,
But why did it have to be me?
  • In "Super Trouper", Donna gets the line
The sight of you will prove to me I'm still alive
  • A small one during the Dancing Queen number; they get to the line "Young and sweet, only 17..." when Sam, Rosie, and Tanya have to take a second when they realize that their dancing queen Donna is gone... but it's also heartwarming, because they see Sophie becoming her own little dancing queen.
  • Donna never reconciled with her mother before she died and Ruby just shows up out of the blue and initially doesn't seem to care that she won't see Donna.
