  • When being told one person can get only one balloon, Kotaro keeps coming back to the seller pretending to be a different kid and asking for a balloon for a different family member each time. He then asks Karino to draw faces on all of them. The balloon seller eventually comes across Kotaro playing alone on the playground with his balloons, with all of them having drawn faces and signed labels of respective family members - a father, a mother, a sister, and a brother. The man immediately realized Kotaro hadn't asked to get a ballon for his family members, but instead to turn them into those family members to deal with loneliness.
  • The reason Kotaro hates getting his picture taken is because the last time it happened, his abusive father found the orphanage he was staying at through an online photo and violently demanded that they return his son.
  • Mizuki being forced to leave her friends at the Shizu Apartment because her abusive ex found out where she lived and how it was only a matter of time before he arrived. Everyone is saddened to see her go, and Kotaro has to wear a Tonosaman mask so no one can see him cry.
  • Kotaro when he eats leftovers from his school’s lunch break. All his classmates happily offer up their food, but the adults look on with growing concern as Kotaro eats far more than he should. When he’s asked if he’s hungry after eating so much, he explains that he isn’t, but he doesn’t want to let all the food before him go to waste.
  • Kotaro meets with three other children, the eldest of which is forced to take up the role of caretaker for his younger siblings after their parents abandoned them. That alone is tearkjerking enough, but it's the falling out between the elder sibling and Kotaro that really induces the waterworks, as Kotaro fiercely denies that they were thrown away by their parents, but he sounds like he's trying to convince himself almost as much as the boy. Even worse, the three children were later taken away by child protection services because they're not as independent as Kotaro.
Kotaro: That's wrong! We were not thrown away!
    Boy: We were thrown away!
Kotaro: NO, SIR! WE WERE NOT THROWN AWAY! WE WERE NOT THROWN AWAY! IT'S NOT TRUE!
  • A soccer boy named Hide tenses up whenever his coach loudly criticizes his playing skills. The reason for this is because he remembers his own father who would yell at him for minor misdemeanors at home.
  • The last episode has Karino learning that Kotaro's mother is already dead. And when the boy openly asks if he'll ever reunite with his mother, Karino assures him that he will while internally apologizing for lying to him for the first time. He even acknowledges that there will come a time where Kotaro will learn the truth and will hate him for betraying his trust.
