    Season 2

City of Radiance

  • Chapter 121:
    • Sissela Siren is the monster born from Umimi's desperation when Sick offers her power and freedom using an Abominable Crystal. She may be selfish and destructive, but she yearns for freedom as much as Umimi did. She flies like a bird with her wings because Umimi admired birds for how they could fly freely in the vast skies before she turned into a monster.
    • Mutenmaru and his friends approach Sissela with the help of Leaf Cloud, hoping to bring her back to her senses. Sissela smiles at them for a moment, only to revert to her evil self and break Umimi's pink seashell with her Song of Destruction. It's easy to interpret this as a manifestation of Umimi's self-loathing.
    • Tear Crown senses Sissela heading west and Umimi's cry for help through their mental connection even as the Abominable Crystal represses Umimi's consciousness.
    • Sick and his associates are puzzled by how Mutenmaru survived Sissela's Song of Destruction. Sissela reveals in her inner monologue that upon seeing Mutenmaru's face, she lost her voice.
    • The chapter concludes with Sissela breaking down in tears, despite being free to fly through the beautiful night sky.

Star of Hope

  • Chapter 139: Sissela saves Mutenmaru from Sick's breath attack but she tearfully says it's her last Song of Destruction as her body disintegrates into bubbles.
  • Chapter 140:
    • In Sissela's mindscape, Tear Crown eventually finds Umimi crying behind a gigantic stone statue. Umimi admits that she yearned for freedom and strength but she did terrible things as a monster before Tear Crown gently reminds her of all her friends and guides her to the door to the real world.
    • The statue in Sissela's mind is that of a girl who looks somewhat like her. The girl in the statue has twintails and wings, but she is crying with her wings down because she is chained by the neck and both hands. The statue symbolizes that even though the Abominable Crystal had given Sissela immense power, she was never really free from her pain and suffering.

Ancient Land

  • Chapters 155-158 reveal Sick's backstory. He started as an innocent young boy, shielded from the cruel situation outside his home. His parents used to be a happy couple before the Abominable Crystals in their rings turned them into tyrants who also neglected him at home. His only comfort in life was a girl his age named Anne Bran, who happened to be a commoner when his parents oppressed her people. He eventually escaped the rebels who were trying to kill him with her guidance but he had to see his parents turning into monsters, his house burning, and her grave. The rebels were happy that his family was gone and they got a ring as their booty, utterly disregarding that they had just killed a child who was one of their own. The Abominable Crystal in the ring reacted to his anger and hatred, transforming him into a monster and replacing his personality with a new, hateful one just like what happened to Umimi. It's no wonder Sick as a monster hates the smiles of people.
