Tear Jerker / For His Own Sake

After reading this story, you will find a lot of moments that bring tears to your eyes.

  • When Granny Hina first learns about the extent of the abuse Keitaro suffered at the hands of the Inn's residents, she's appropriately horrified, worried that her grandson will hate her for having let this go on. Unfortunately, this becomes an Ignored Epiphany, as she falls back upon bad habits; she simply cannot admit that she doesn't know better than everyone else, and continues making excuses for the Hinata Girls while trying to manipulate Keitaro and everyone else into doing what she wants.
    • This ultimately costs Granny Hina everything — she winds up ruining her relationship with her entire family, along with losing her best friend. On top of all that, the tenants she did all of this for? End up leaving her behind as well — some of them realize the error of their ways and leave her and the toxic environment of the Hinata Inn behind, while others suffer the consequences of their Karma Houdini Warranties running out and wind up beyond her reach.
    • The reason why she was so protective of the Hinata Girls in the first place: she was trying to atone for how she failed to help her eldest daughter in her time of need. Her relationship with Yoko was extremely strained due to her Control Freak tendencies; when Yoko came for her seeking help, she turned her away, not knowing that would be their last conversation before Yoko was killed in a car crash. The Hinata Girls became her way of compensating, as she tried coddling and protecting them while aiming to manipulate everyone else into letting her tenants have their way. When Marumi points out to her how this has just enabled the girls, Hina leaves in a huff, refusing to accept the idea she did anything wrong... only to realize much later just how true Marumi's warning was.
  • Watching how the Hinata Girls' Fatal Flaws lead to most of them self-destructing over the course of the story. Yeah, they're bringing it upon themselves by refusing to learn from their mistakes or admit their faults, but that doesn't make it any easier.
    • In a similar vein, if you treasured the girls' friendships, seeing them break down can be incredibly painful, as it becomes clear just how shallow many of those bonds were. Without Keitaro around as the resident punching bag, most of the girls wind up turning upon each other.
  • Out of all the Hinata Girls, Shinobu comes out the most sympathetic; despite everything, she was genuinely happier at the Inn than she was with her parents, as they treated her as nothing more than an object to fight over. Her biggest problem was being an Extreme Doormat who couldn't stand up for herself... or for Keitaro, who came to resent her inability to help clear up any of the times where the others accused him of causing problems.
  • Seta discovers that her time at the Hinata Inn made Sarah's Spoiled Brat tendencies even worse, as watching Naru and Motoko beat the crap out of Keitaro left her convinced that she can just force others to do whatever she demands. He ultimately sends her to a strict boarding school in hopes of setting her straight, while constantly being told off for his failures as a father... and quietly nodding along, agreeing with every word.
    • In the final chapter, Sarah declares how much she hates him and that he's not her father, insisting that the Hinata Girls will come to save her. Seta sadly accepts that their relationship has been completely destroyed, lamenting his mistakes as he drives away.
"I have failed miserably," Seta said with sadness and then he thought about Sarah's mother, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I was never fit to take care of anyone much less your daughter."
  • Suu's misguided attempt to 'cheer everyone up' by unleashing an army of mecha-tamas at the Kuromitsu Inn gets her arrested; at the detention center, her sister is forced to admit that she's dug herself too deep this time, having unthinkingly caused an international incident.
    • In Chapter 27, Suu finally realizes how much damage she caused, and wants to call Keitaro to apologize. But she'd already used her one phone call, and breaks down crying when her request is denied, sobbing that she didn't mean to hurt anyone and that she's not a monster.
  • Near the end of Chapter 23, Naru tears into her step-sister Mei, accusing her of being a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing Attention Whore. Despite how badly this breaks Mei's heart, reducing her to tears, she still pleads with Naru to come back home with her and their mother.
  • Nagisa's Dark and Troubled Past: her old friend Takeru was a lot like Keitaro, but wound up being murdered. And the ones responsible got away with it.
  • Motoko's moment of self-realization when she finally realizes that her problems were all her own fault, along with recognizing how much happier Keitaro is after getting away from the Hinata Inn.
  • When Ida, Naru's career adviser, explains to Naru how her assaulting a random man has long-reaching consequences, Naru pulls her usual victim blaming. Ida muses about how she'd expected great things from Naru, only to see her acting so horribly... throwing away all that potential.
  • Ranma's unwanted reunion with Akane, which opens with her attacking him. It's implied that he won their fight by simply dodging or blocking her attacks until she wore herself out. Afterwards, the two sit down and talk things out, with both coming to terms with how they're equally to blame for the failure of their relationship. When Ranma leaves, Akane pretends to be unaffected, but then starts crying as she realizes she really did love him, but that it's far too late to repair their relationship. Ranma watches her go, hanging his head while berating himself for his own mistakes.
  • The last chapter offers several moments of tragedy:
    • Mitsumi finally comes to her senses, realizing that everything she sacrificed in service of trying to get Keitaro and Naru back together was All for Nothing. Her inability to accept that she'd wasted her own opportunity to potentially have a romantic relationship with him for the sake of letting him be happy with Naru, only for that to fall apart, led to her losing so much more, as she destroyed all of her other relationships and got expelled from Todai. She decides to quietly leave for Okinawa without even trying to apologize or ask forgiveness from anyone, seeing little point in trying to repair what she'd destroyed.
    • Kagura is finally punished for her villainy... by being taken out by Takeru's sister in a Murder-Suicide.
    • Naru demonstrates that she's learned nothing from the whole experience when she expects her mother to take her back after the way she tore into her and Mei. Even when Saori calls out her Moral Myopia, Naru just tries to force Keitaro to take her back, throwing another fit when he refuses.
      • The very last lines of her part of the "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue reveal that she finally has recognized the part she played in her own downfall, far too late for her to do anything to repair her ruined reputation and relationships. Even then, she remains entirely focused on what this cost her personally.
    • Sarah realizes that Naru, Motoko, Granny Hina and the rest won't be coming to rescue her from her boarding school... and that she likely wasn't as important to them as she thought she was. What's more, Seta took her angry rejection of him to heart, believing she sincerely meant that she didn't consider him to be her father. She finds herself helplessly crying for him, realizing she might never see him again and that she destroyed her bond with her father just because she couldn’t get her own way.
    • And there's some tears of happiness for Keitaro, as after everything he endured, he finally earns his happy ending.
