  • Although they're the bad guys, there's Irina crying over Lemy's corpse. It really hits home that Lemy was the only person in the entire series that Irina loved outside of using for a pawn, and his dying hits her so hard that she stops in the middle of a duel to mourn him.
  • Ney recounting the story of her abuse at the hands of Prim to Lemy as a warning of what happens when you get too obsessed with a mother who might be just using you. Lemy himself briefly wonders if this is the case several times over the course of the novel.
  • The Duel of Merrigod Plateau.
    • Kiril's story gets even sadder with the revelation that he wasn't able to resurrect Elluka Chirclatia, and was tricked into allowing Levia to possess her body. He unwittingly instigated the destruction of his country and completely lost his mind for absolutely nothing.
    • Gumillia breaking down in tears for the first time as she admits her true purpose wasn't to be Elluka's apprentice, but rather follow Levia around and seal her away should she ever regain her memories. But by this point she's come to care about Elluka and refuses to do it. After the duel she makes a deal with Seth and waits in the Hellish Yard for Elluka to come, not realizing that as she's a part of MA she won't be coming back.
  • Germaine, finally free of Irina's control, spends two months rapidly aging in a time period hundreds of years after all her friends and loved ones are dead, having been robbed of almost her entire life. She tries to explain herself as the Hero of Lucifenia and talk about what happened before she was possessed, but of course no one believes her, and she dies alone.
  • Irina's final monologue chapter, especially because it takes place soon after Lemy, her surrogate son, has been shot.
    "The annihilation of gods
    The destruction of the world
Such is the purpose of a HER.
    Then...what about my purpose?
    What happened to that?
    I—I wanted—
    I wanted to have friends
    I wanted—to have children."
