Tear Jerker / Evil Food Eater Conchita

Go To

  • Banica watching Carlos die. One of the novel illustrations make it clear that she cried while eating him.
  • Poor Muzuri and Banica in the first chapter. Unwittingly cursing his entire household out of a desire to celebrate his daughter's birth, Muzuri has to live through ten years of desperation and losing everything to the Gula disease; worst of all is watching his beloved wife, who he fought to marry, become a monster because he badgered her into trying a little bit of the cursed Baemu pig during dinner, culminating in having to kill her so she doesn't resort to cannibalism. (There's a sad irony in that considering what his daughter became...) Banica, for her part, had to suffer through ten years of her mother's abuse and watch her own father kill said mother right in front of her. There's a scene where Megour outright starts stuffing food down Banica's throat as the servants try to stop her in horror, outraged that the baby is the only one not suffering from hunger.
  • Carlos engagement to Conchita becomes this thanks to Foregone Conclusion: despite their negative first impressions of each other they actually start to enjoy themselves in each other's company. Carlos even realizes that he's not dreading the marriage anymore, and notes that Banica has begun to loosen up around him. His thinking on this is just before the ill-fated dinner scene, where Banica is triggered into a PTSD attack by seeing the cursed wineglass and eats all of the food that everyone had left behind on their plates as though her mother is still forcing her to eat. Particularly tragic as she'd told him in an earlier scene that she wanted to travel the world specifically to choose to eat delicious food on her own terms now that her mother is gone. Her behavior ends up terrifying him and his family and breaking the engagement, and they don't see each other again for a long time.
  • The way that some of the nobles insult and mock Banica for her weight before she becomes the slender beauty she's known as can be this for some, especially considering that her fixation on food was originally the result of abuse. It's one of the first things that other people comment on in the Soup chapter and one of the guests in the get-well party in Poisson laughs about how fat she is (or rather, was).
  • Muzuri’s last moments with Ron just before his death. Despite Ron’s assurances that none of the staff blame him for the horrors of the Gula disease, Muzuri insists that his wife must still be angry at him—suggesting he never forgave himself for killing Megour and causing her to suffer so much. He passes on after stating he still has to apologize to her, and dies mid-sentence while presumably trying to tell Ron to take care of Banica.
  • While it’s heavy nightmare fuel as well, the twins killing Ron soon after Muzuri’s death can also be this to some extent. He faithfully served the Conchita family for many years, even being entrusted with Muzuri’s only daughter, only to be killed for trying to get rid of the cursed wineglass in a desire to protect Banica.
