Oh, Aikawa...

Despite the overrall nature of the manga, there's some genuinely sad heartbreaking moments. Beware of spoilers.

  • Despite being a Sorcerer who Kaiman has every reason to hate and want to kill due to their use of Hole as a source of guinea pigs, Matsumura's death at his hands is rather tragic due to his partner Fujita's futile attempts to save him and his own final action when chopped to pieces is to fire a spell from his severed hand to return Fujita to the Sorcerer's World to save him from Kaiman. This is also the first scene of the entire story.
    • A group of Sorcerers are even shown later at an attempted resurrection for Matsumura in mourning, showing that while their actions are truly horrific towards the people of Hole, they do still care about each other for the most part.
  • Everything regarding Kaiman becomes this in hindsight once you learn about who he truly is. Reading earlier chapters with knowledge of later parts can be pretty heartwrenching.
  • Speaking of bad things in hindsight, the mere existence of the Cross-eyes can become extremely depressing once you learn more about who the Boss is.
  • En's death, both to how grisly it is and for being the first major death in the series that changes the course of the story.
    • The aftermath is just as bad. It's told from Fujita's POV, in which the entire manor falls apart and most of En's henchmen flee. The only seemingly remaining members are him, the Cleaners, Ebisu and Chota. It's pretty depressing to see, specially because Fujita was the one who witnessed En's corpse being dragged away.
  • Natsuki's death. After being decapitated by Kai, her body is turned into mushrooms and hidden inside a statue of Chidaruma in En's manor. Given how she was a Genki Girl and one of the least malicious characters in the entire manga, her murder certainly comes off as a nasty tear jerker. It gets much worse when Aikawa later finds her severed head stuffed inside a jar. Worse — while several of the killed characters are resurrected throughout the story, Natsuki isn't, and she is explicitly shown to be suffering in Hell like all other sorcerers.
  • After all the other remaining Cross-eyes officers discounting Dokuga and Tetsujo are killed off, we later see Tetsujo crying. Even though they're enemies to the En's family, Fujita expresses sympathy for them. There's also Tetsujo's breakdown upon realizing the Boss' true intentions.
  • Considering how Shin is through the story, it's hard to expect something sad with him... unless you ponder about his backstory, then the implications can be pretty awful. Mainly, where his habit of eating quickly comes from.
    • Later in the manga, after he's dragged away by Kai, we see him dreaming of a memory of him and his father in front of the Magic User cemetery, in Hole, where his father tells Shin about what happened to his mother. It only lasts for a page, and possibly is a Dream Within a Dream, but it feels strangely desolate and sad. Notable since it's one of the few instances of the series where's he's visibly freaked out.
