Tear Jerker / Deep Purple

  • "Contact Lost" from Bananas context
  • "When a Blind Man Cries." An evocative title combined with some of the most depressing lyrics in the band's history.
  • "Mistreated". You can hear the pain in Coverdale's voice... And the last line is one of the saddest things in rock music... Punctuated by a very tired sounding sigh.
    • During his live performances of the song, Glenn Hughes adds his own Subdued Section which is arguably even sadder than the original because it sounds like he's talking more about the mistreatment he put his body and mind through during his drug addiction.
  • "A Simple Song" from Now What?! is a somber opening number, and fitting given it was the first album since Jon Lord's 2012 death, which had occurred while they were recording.
  • Two songs from Now What?! are written In Memoriam for the late Jon Lord: "Uncommon Man" and "Above and Beyond". Live versions of the latter can be very difficult to watch, as it's sometimes clear that Ian Gillan is barely able to hold back tears.
  • "Lalena" from Deep Purple has a very melancholy air to it.
Run your hand through your hair
    Paint your face with despair
That's your lot in life, Lalena
    Can't blame ya
    Lalena...
  • "Soldier of Fortune." Already far from a cheerful tune, Coverdale and Lord later resurrected the song with Music/Whitesnake in a more minimalist arrangement to devastating effect.
