The whole setting is a love story set in a Crapsack World, what could go wrong?
- Just everything poor Julia goes through. Face it, it just sucks to be her.
- The other servants bully Julia because they couldn’t stand her muteness and envious of their “kinder” boss treating her nicer than them, rarely feed proper meals, nearly raped by Gregory, then framed for messing up the kitchen. The last incident resulted in her getting viciously flogged and abandoned to the slums.
- As fate would have it, she’s rescued by the kindhearted Glen. He just so happens to be a powerful duke, and he doesn’t hesitate to take her home and nurse her back to health. It doesn’t take long for him to fall in love with Julia, but she’s oblivious to his growing attraction and thinks of him as a friend. But once Ophelia comes into the picture, she threatens Julia to stay away from Glen, and can order her dead if she doesn’t obey. Julia reluctantly obeys, as she finds herself becoming a burden towards Glen’s kindness.
- Glen’s childhood is just plain tragic. He was abused by his mother because she was driven insane by his father cheating on her with multiple women while wasting away their fortune. A young woman named Suzanne was always there to comfort him from his mother’s abuse, and Glen was grateful for this. But one day, Glen’s mother couldn’t take the pain and drowned herself. This horrified Glen, but then he sees Suzanne’s Slasher Smile. It turns out she never cared about Glen; she was secretly his father’s mistress and planned on marrying his father by doting on his son while pushing his legal wife away. No wonder Glen had trust issues. That is, until he met Julia.
