- By the end, Michael has lost possibly the only emotional connection he's had in years, and he goes back to his boring and depressing life where he can't meaningfully connect with anyone. There's an implication that this is something that happened multiple times before, with Bella, his wife, and now Lisa. He'll always be alone.
- The morning after they've had sex, Micheal and Lisa are discussing their plans for the future over breakfast, when Lisa's voice (as well as her face) slowly changes into Tom Noonan's, just like everyone else's, signifying what's implied to be the loss of yet another emotional connection Micheal has. It's a tearjerker, with just a bit of Nightmare Fuel too.
- It's also sad to see Lisa's reaction. She notices Micheal is acting strange and outright asks him if she's done something wrong, even calling him "darling", and wonders if the scar around her right eye is making him uncomfortable. The sadness in her voice is understated, but heartbreaking nonetheless.
- Micheal's breakdown towards the end of the movie. At that point he's just falling to pieces on stage, going off on tangents mid-speech that are basically one big desperate cry for help.
- This line from Michael:"I sweat onto my pillow every night. I think there's something very, very wrong with me."
