Light Novel

    Volume 1
  • In the first volume, page 62, Yuuta mentions that Rikka's personal term for e-mails sounds like it came out of Academy City.
  • In the first volume, page 112, Yuuta hypothesizes Rikka's Devil World as being a place where "you can hear your body crumbling after Fir*brandnote  swoops down as you visit."
  • In the first volume, pages 139 to 142, Yuuta and Rikka play video games that are heavily implied to be Parodiusnote  and a bizarre non-existent spin-off of Super Smash Bros..note

    Volume 2
  • In the second volume Rikka and Yuuta had a conversation that refers to Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Rikka asked Yuuta to make a contract to become a magical girl. Yuuta, after responding with "Homu?", replied while he likes that show as well, he couldn't help with the entropy thing much.

Season 1

    Episode 1

    Episode 2

    Episode 3
  • One should not be surprised that the light music club was the first club Makoto refers to in the School Club rush.
  • Sanae's "special move" (and her giant pigtails) is reminiscent of Sailor Moon's transformation sequence.
  • Although slight, Sanae says, "That's the duty of those bound by contract!", which sounds a lot like Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
  • Dekomori talks about the Second and Third "Children", which references Neon Genesis Evangelion. She specifically notes she's the same age as the "Second Children" and "Third Children", misplaced pluralization and all.

    Episode 4
  • Near the start of episode 4, Rikka and Sanae do a Men in Black parody, complete with sunglasses.
  • Sanae performs the incantation for the Dragon Slave by Lina Inverse. She specifically chants the first, second, and last line of Lina's Finishing Move, including the actual name of the spell (just in case you didn't catch it).
  • Sanae and Rikka make a Magic Circle with Kumin in the middle. The circle itself could be a reference to many an anime ranging from Fullmetal Alchemist to Cardcaptor Sakura, both of which helped popularize the trope.
  • Yuuta's probably playing Love Plus in episode 4.
    • And makes a blatant reference to Kami Nomi in the process.
  • Sanae also mentions the infamous "OVER 9000" line from Dragon Ball Z, except replacing "9000" with "200,005,000".
    • This is also a a reference to other Kyoani giant The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. More specifically, to The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, as this is exactly the random number that Haruhi shouts out when Kyon almost takes a peek at Mikuru's panties.

    Episode 5
  • Rikka is at the shrine and unable to recover from learning that her math skills are worse than Dekomori's, who is younger than her. Yuuta then remarks "It's like getting up to 300% damage in Smash Brothers."
  • Sanae states that to 'face' the 7*x or above in the multiplication table, you'll need the Level Upper.
  • Sanae can see the answers to her math test much the same way Lalah can see time itself.
  • Dekomori says, "Don't tell me it's a Blood Type Blue!" This is another Eva reference, referring to Blood Type Blue, which indicates that an entity is unambiguously an Angel.
  • The episode also references Taxi Driver of all movies, as seen in this comparison video. In particular, it references Travis Bickle's arm-mounted slide for his hidden gun.

    Episode 6
  • Yuuta is playing Monster Hunter, though admits that he's been out of practice with the game.
  • Rikka, Sanae, and Kumin are sounding off their various chuuni personas (including one given to Kumin), with all of them wearing the number Zero.

    Episode 7

    Episode 9
  • Dekomori exclaims that they have a synchronization rate of 100% as she swings at the same spot as Rikka, making a reference to synchronization rates in Neon Genesis Evangelion.

    Episode 10
  • Dekomori is humming the launch track "Contre Les Agressions" from Rebuild of Evangelion after Chuunibyou's OP sequence.

Season 2

    Episode 2
  • In the second episode of Ren, Rikka said she saw a "dolphin" in the word processor. She's referring to Kairu, an East-Asia-exclusive Office Assistant that appears in Microsoft Office versions 97-2007. She also noted "in the English version, my fish is a paperclip instead." Most viewers should still remember Clippy.

    Episode 8
  • In episode 8 of Ren, we have a pair of fighting girls, the younger of which is called Sanya by the obviously lesbian elder.

    Episode 9
  • In episode 9 of season 2, Rikka's attack scene shouts out many mecha references, including:

    Episode 11

Others

    Christmas OVA
  • During the last scene in the Christmas OVA when Rikka is descending to Yuuta's balcony, the moon and night sky behind her is an eerie green color.

    Take On Me

    In General
  • Let's start with Yuuta Togashi's family name being a reference to the family name of author Yoshihiro Togashi of YuYu Hakusho and Hunter × Hunter fame.
    • And doesn't Yuuta's Chuunibyou persona "Dark Flame Master" and his "Black Flame Dragon" remind you a lot of a certain three-eyed protagonist from YuYu Hakusho? He even wears the arm bandage.
    • Indeed, Yuuta's alter ego, the sword-wielding "Dark Flame Master" and his ability to summon a black dragon made of dark fire (The Ankokuryu) is also a reference to YuYu Hakusho's Jaganshi Hiei, a sword-wielding fire demon who can summon the Jaou-En-Satsu Kokuryuha, which is also a black dragon made of dark fire.
  • Meanwhile, Rikka Takanashi herself doesn't only parody the Eyepatch of Power found on numerous anime girls like Mei Misaki from Another or Najenda from Akame ga Kill! (Megumin from KonoSuba came later). She's also a reference to Hiei, particularly the aspect of him that involves covering up one of his eyes (his "Jagan" or "Evil Eye") to seal its power. In her case, she's covering up her "Jaou Shingan" or "Tyrant's Eye", with its name also referencing Hiei's most powerful special attack.
    • Rikka's character concept of wearing an eye patch, having indigo hair, and being fond over a character, etc., may have been a reference to Chrome Dokuro from Reborn! (2004) as well.
    • Aside from Hiei's Jagan, Rikka's Tyrant's Eye may be a reference to these Magic Eyes as well: Rokudo Mukuro's Six Paths of Reincarnation from Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, Sasuke Uchiha's Sharingan and Neji Hyuuga's Byakugan from Naruto, and Starjun's third eye from Toriko.
  • As for Sanae Dekomori, her twin-tailed hairstyle is reminiscent of a certain sailor-uniform-wearing magical girl.
  • An anime where Soichiro Hoshi voices a student and the teacher is voiced by Kikuko Inoue...? Meh, it's been done before.
  • The commercial to the Blu-Ray special episode riffs on Neon Genesis Evangelion's iconic battle theme Decisive Battle.
  • Rikka Takanashi's home town is modeled very closely after Kami in the Hyougo prefecture. Key/Visual Arts based their visual novel Air in the same city.
  • The oversized weapons may have taken cues from the Black★Rock Shooter series in which most of the Otherworlders weapons tend to also be oversized and appear to run on Rule of Cool.
  • This video showcases the real-life places featured in the Chuunibyou anime.
