You can't have Harry as the main narrator without smartassery and tons of Shout-Outs. This page is about the latter.
- Codex Alera by Jim Butcher exists as an in-universe novel series. Sona's Peerage plays a FATE-based Tabletop Role-Playing Game based on the series at Harry's place once a week. The Cinder Spires are also mentioned.
- Ghostbusters get shouted out to multiple times:
- The initial spell used to trap the Beholders is called the "Spengler's Seal".
- When a skeptical Tokyo PD detective tries to arrest a ghost, Harry tells him "That oughta do it. Thanks very much, Ray."
- When Lash is staring at a certain mind controlling artifact, Harry tells her to stop, or he'll have to make a Ghostbusters 2 reference. Her response is a sarcastic "There is no Lash, only Zuul".
- A few to The Princess Bride:
- When Sona makes an oath about keeping Soulfire a secret, Harry answers with "Throw me the rope."
- When the Wandering Wizard is negotiating to rescue the Switch Princess in Oppai Dragon, she suggests he help her out of revenge. His response is, "Like a wise Spaniard said, revenge doesn't exactly pay the bills."
- When facing the head of the Himejima clan, Harry suggests "You put down the rod and I put down my gun, and we try to kill each other like civilized casters?". And is annoyed when no-one gets it.
- Harry and Reya work their way through the Dragonlance Chronicles, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and (to his chagrin) the Harry Potter books, during their reading sessions.
- In A Movie Marathon?, Lash insists that Harry and the girls order from Pizza Hut, because, as Harry flubs it (not knowing the meme), Pizza Hut supported the revolution.
- Tsubasa paraphrases certain Thought-Aversion Failure scene from Ultimate Spider-Man during the sleepover above.Tsubasa: Good night, Harry. [kisses him on the cheek] I will see you in the morning. [Beat] And if you aren't picturing me naked, I won't appreciate it. [enters her bedroom]
Harry: It looks like Reya lent her issue 43.
Lash: Or she googled it. - When Harry and Tsubasa play Laser Tag on their first date, one of the team's preassigned player names are natural disasters. The other team? FATE servant classes. Harry gets Archer and Tsubasa gets Berserker.
- The Dungeons & Dragons Beholders show up, though in universe the explanation is that the creators had some knowledge of the creature and worked it into the game.
- When Harry first learns about Mutation Pieces, he asks if they make Devils want to wear spandex and sprout metal claws from their hands.
- In referencing Serafall's real age, Harry quips that she was out saving the Underwold when his grandpa was in diapers, and his grandpa is also older than he looks.
- Irina dresses as Perry the Platapus for Harry's Halloween party. Harry also makes a comparison to Platypi when discussing Pawns, as in, they don't do much.
- Harry makes repeated reference playing some anime crossover fighting game ending in "Climax" with Serafall and Tsubasa
- In A Date and A Half? Tsubasa and Serafall unlock Lina Inverse for a version of the game in the arcade.
- In the Halloween Omake, Harry in the narration states "...to make a long story short, one by one they all arrived."
- The method Harry uses to prevent his Halloween party from devolving into an orgy is a Shout-Out to In Flight and/or its source material, Sekirei.
- Furthermore, Harry's rendition of Miya's Demon Head is a hockey mask accompanied by the sound of chainsaws.
- Harry calls Lash's pet project to get him to Marry Them All the "Harem Plan", which fittingly enough also involved a scheming Harem Seeker by proxy.
- During the Beholder Arc, one of the excuses Rias gives to Gaspar as to why they are going out, is an electric rat infestation.
- One of Harry's Erotic Dreams is briefly described as Sona replicating Sailor Mercury's Transformation Sequence, only without the magic sparkles hiding her naughty bits and a more Stripperiffic version of Mercury's costume.
- Serafall tells Lumiel that she and Harry are on a mission from God. Harry rolls his eyes and corrects her that the mission is from Michael.
- When Uriel asks Harry what most important thing for a spymaster to have is, Harry's answer is "An eye patch and flying aircraft carrier."
- The Wandering Wizard (Harry's fictional counterpart in story) says he wound up in the Underworld when he took a wrong turn at Albuquerque.
- Harry recognizes the voice of the actor who plays his character in Oppai Dragon TV show as the "guy who played Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer". James Marsters does the books on tape readings of the The Dresden Files novels.
- Said Wandering Wizard wears a fedora, which Harry doesn't. This is of course a shout out to the book covers that show Harry wearing a hat, which he doesn't do in any of media adaptations.
- When Harry took Reya on a date to a large book sales and swap meet in the Hyogo Prefecture, they ran into a "Koneko look-alike" whose hair looked almost lavender when the sun caught it right who soon became their primary competition for good book deals. The couple also found a Magician selling low-level Spell Books who happened to like cosplaying as Yuuko Ichihara, long pipe and fancy kimono included.
- Kuoh Academy's second year math teacher is a beautiful, if overly serious, young woman in her early twenties. She has a penchant for wearing white and blue pantsuits, and the third years nicknamed her "White Devil" for the difficulty of her final exams. Her family name is Takamachi, but her given name is not revealed.
- Chapter 72 confirms that "Takamachi-sensei" is indeed Nanoha, just not the one from the main continuity. She hires Harry to find her Raising Heart, in this universe a card from a game. It turns out that Fate took it as part of a surprise for her.
- Large sections of A Stolen Device? are shout-outs to various incarnations of Nanoha.
- The character is based on Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha INNOCENT, as are Fate and Alicia.
- The Brave Duel expansions are named for various Nanoha series (to wit, Aces, Strikers, Vivid, Force, and Innocent).
- The code name for the Brave Duel re-release is Detonation, while the official name is Brave Duel: Reflection.
- Nanoha's nickname from the heyday of Brave Duel was "Ace of Aces".
- And the plot of the chapter is kicked off because Raising Heart's AI demands a Belkan Cartridge upgrade, similar to A's.
- Harry joked once that "Magic is real, unless declared integer".
- Serafall wanted Harry to cosplay as Prince Xizor.
- Oakley's Sacred Gear "Lens of Truth" is basically an extended version of the same item from The Legend of Zelda. Her Balance Break, "Mask of Truth" has the appearance of said item, but different powers.
- Out of all the ways Harry could have told Tsubasa what tactical approach he wanted her to apply to the battle against the Hero Faction in the Kyoto Story Arc, he chose this one:
- He also references Cap's instructions to both Thor and Iron Man for Reya:
Harry: You've got the winds, blow them back or blow them to bits. - Azazel, Serafall, and Nike work together to cast a spell called "Large, Friendly Letters" on Kyoto. It makes sure the civilians don't panic, and see the supernatural fights as someone else's problem.
- When the Delta Beholder (a.k.a. Rini) becomes Serafall's Knight (renamed Shizukesa) she gains a human form that looks like (or knowing Serafall, is based on) Ram. Her personality doesn't match, however.
- Serafall's Queen Behemoth looks like Kalifa. Again, her personality is totally different.
- Oakley is noted to look like Isuzu, though this is a coincidence that Serafall didn't even notice before Harry pointed it out.
- Harry described Issei's Power-Up in the Kyoto Story Arc by paraphrasing He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (1983), but he gets interrupted.Harry: [to Issei] And I get it. "Perverted secret power are revealed to you, when you hold aloft her magic boobs and say…" a-cuuh…
Reya: [grabs and squeezes his hand]
Tsubasa: [elbows him in the ribs]
Harry: [recovers] Right, that was a bit too much. - After Harry suggests the Angels should have used (or should switch to using) the Major Arcana of the Tarot for their Brave Saints, Lash starts humming Reach Out To The Truth at Harry.
- Azazel created a Homunculus that looks like Luke Skywalker, that Harry refers to as "Luuke".
- Bizzaro!Mab's secretary is Maleficent. And she is not a fan of Walt Disney.
- Student from Yuusha Gojo Kumiai Kouryuugata Keijiban plays a major part in the forum omake. He even claims his presence is the main reason it is an omake instead of canon. The admin tells him to stop role-playing in a general thread.
- Student said he's not a Troll. His mom had him tested for it.
- There are a number of rapid fire Shout Outs after Reya reveals her familiar:
- Tomoe suggests she call it Terrible Tornado. Harry says it's already taken.
- When Reya says her familiar is named Lucy, Oakley asks if she offers psychiatric help for a nickel. Harry gets it, but the younger and mostly Japanese Devils don't.
- Harry, knowing Reya, guesses the familiar is named after Lucy Pevensie, which Reya confirms.
- When Shizukesa thanks Harry for saving her (by helping Serafall find and recruit her) he shrugs it off as being only twelve percent responsible, though a case could be made for thirteen. Shizukesa recognizes he is making a reference, but doesn't know what it is.
- When Harry is told that Shizukesa's potential familiar is a bugbear, he unknowingly quotes Shirou from The Hill of Swords:Harry/Shirou: What part of it resembles either a bug or a bear?
- Sona and Rias have an argument over which pizza is the best. Rias' choice happens to be Authentic Terrific Nick's.
- The Campione! light novel series exists In-Universe. Rossweisse is a little uncomfortable with how unintentionally correct they are, regarding Athena's origins.
- When Harry suggested using a CNC mill as a Muggles Do It Better and less error-prone alternative to carving a mandala on a metal panel by hand, Sona asked him how he even knew about such machines in the first place. He told her that "there is this web-series [where] some master smiths make swords from games, comics, movies, etc. And they use a CNC mill for some of their etching".
- While playing a One Piece video game, Harry refers to Bellamy as a spring-heeled dickweasel.
- It's a bad idea to carelessly quote Star Wars at Harry.Takako: I am fluent in over six million forms of melee combat.
Harry: Great... Ta-three-K-O. - After finding out Sona and Serafall's father really could give him a measure of immortality, Harry muses, "who wants to live forever?"
- Harry greets all the other casters with a bright "Hi, everybody!"
- Kendra (annoyed with Harry for leaving her with Akeno), causes trouble by sitting next to him while Sona, Reya, and Tsubasa are debating who gets the two spots. Harry then tells her he has "five words for you. 'Subtle and quick to anger'."
- When Kendra accuses Harry of pranking her, he retorted that "[any of them] could have dyed Miss Boddy in the kitchen, and [she doesn't] have enough information to make a final accusation."
- When Lash chides Harry that his "short" summary of the Allocer siblings and Anna Sitri's Backstories isn't short enough, he launches into an even faster version, prefacing it with "Okay, here we go. The short, SHORT version."
- On New Year's Eve, Serafall teleported the main cast's party, got her midnight kiss with Harry while floating upside down, and then immediately went back to the Satans' official party. Tsubasa quipped whether the reenactment of the Signature Scene from Spider-Man makes him Mary Jane, but Harry points out that the fact Serafall was flying instead of hanging from a thread means he's more like Lois Lane.
- Nine-tenths of chapter 77 consist in an episode of Miracle Levi-tan where a Sailor Moon-inspired Magical Girl team based on Sona, Tsubasa, Reya, and the eponymous Levi-tan faces the Hero Faction reimagined as Power Rangers – complete with Harry the Wandering Wizard as a Tuxedo Mask-equivalent to the former, and a Sixth Ranger Traitor to the latter group whom they want to "redeem" back to their cause. Given the genres involved, the Ham-to-Ham Combat was unavoidable.
- The Hero Faction, or rather the "Divine Inheritor Hero Rangers", are played by de-aged Power Rangers actors. In order of introduction:
- Siegfried: Johnny Yong Bosch (originally Black Ranger II from Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers) as Swords Blue.
- Herc: Pua Magasiva (Red Wind Ranger from Power Rangers Ninja Storm) Muscles Yellow.
- Jeanne: Ciara Hanna (Megaforce Yellow from Power Rangers Megaforce) as Girl Pink.
- Cao Cao: Jason David Frank with a goatee (originally Green Ranger from Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers) as Spear Red.
- Georg: (or rather, Georgia) Deborah Estelle Phillips (Yellow Time Force Ranger Power Rangers Time Force) as Wands Green.
- As the Rangers retreat after losing to Levi-tan's Super Mode, Herc declares "We'll get you next time, Devils. "Next time!"
- Kiba doesn't really like that his fictional counterpart in Oppai Dragon got to be the villain and complains about it when Harry asked. He immediately quips "I get it, Ralph" to cheer him up, but Kiba doesn't get the reference.
- When Harry pretends to be a reporter attending the pre-Rating Game press conference with Sona and Seekvaira Agares' Peerages, he introduces himself as Clark Kent from the Daily Bugle.
- After getting Kendra to return the last piece of his staff, Harry implies that he is most angry that she didn't make it into a Rod of Seven Parts expy.
- The prank war between Harry and Kendra almost escalated into the Wizard reusing the Lingua Prima spell to get the Ninja stuck speaking in a certain fictional "language":Reya: What language?
Harry: Flora Colossus.
Gasper: What's that?
Harry: I am Groot.
Rias: Part of me wants to ask why, but I think it is probably safer not to ask.
Harry: [nods sagely at her] I am Groot. - Sona's father accidentally quotes WOPR. Harry naturally couldn't let that one go. Sona herself gets really worried for a moment because she doesn't catch the reference.Duncan: How about a nice game of chess?
Harry: And are you going to start a Global Thermonuclear War if we say "no"? - When Gaspar drinks Sairaorg's blood and suddenly gets very buff, Tomoe refers to is as "pulling a Bisky".
- Harry tells Rias "Asia has got zero poker face. She's got so little poker face that Gaga would spontaneously weep if she ever met Asia."
- Harry isn't willing to shoot a group of exorcist who are kidnapping a youkai, but his moral and legal objections were somewhat fuzzier on the subject of tires.
- Sela Deruaren is a reference to Elsa from Frozen, her name is an anagram, she is physically similar, and she is a young woman with a lack of training and control of her ice powers.
- Mittelt claims Parker is based on her.
- When asked why he would want to go to Tahiti, Harry responds that "It's a magical place". Reya and Tsubasa say the last two words alongside him.
- To teach the Middle class Devil candidates the US states and capitals (a common question on previous exams), Harry enlists the help of "professor Wakko".
- Harry describes Ophis's hair and eyes as "darkness beyond blackest pitch". This is a reference to the Lord of Nightmares as described in the spell Giga Slave from Slayers.
- In An Actual Emergency Sona wants to take Harry to a magic item store named or nicknamed G3. The proprietor's name is Shaun, described as a professional who will either want to sell Harry's magical crafts or steal the designs.
