Ship Tease / Puyo Puyo

Go To

The Puyo Puyo series seems to have a knack for teasing a lot of possible couples. Small wonder it attracts so many shippers.

  • In particular, the series really likes to tease Amitie x Sig, possibly more than other pairings.
    • In Fever 2 (Sig's debut game), a possible menu conversation has the two discussing wanting the other to give them the Memory of Chu as a gift.
    • Also in Fever 2, Amitie's and Sig's blood types are described as being O and B respectively. In Japan, it's believed that those with O and B blood types go well together, and they often have happy marriages.
    • In 15th Anniversary, Sig gets oddly worried about Amitie's hands being hard like his left arm, and he asks her if he can take a look at her hands to make sure they're okay.
    • In 20th Anniversary, the two help each other out in their respective story mode scenarios.
    • In the English localization of Puyo Puyo Tetris, Amitie vaguely hints at her affection towards Sig via a conversation with her memory of him.
Amitie: Lately, I feel like you and I... well... I just wanna say...
Sig: Save it, Ami. You should tell the real Sig.
    • In Chronicle, Ally declares that she 'loves Sig', alarming Amitie to some degree. She's only relieved once Ally clarifies that she simply admires his interest in bugs and is not IN love with him (Ally's definition of "love" is quite broad).
    • An unused line in Chronicle, meant to be used in Bleuo's dungeon, has Sig outright telling Amitie that he wants to be together. When Amitie asks with who, he says with the bugs of Primp.
    • In the novel Amitie and the Girl of Love!?, Klug gives a vague definition of love as "it's a feeling you get when you really like being with a person". Amitie says she likes being with Sig, catching his attention as he realizes she may be in love with him. Amitie herself then internally comments Sig has "beautiful eyes" (adding onto innerly describing his hair as pretty earlier), and seconds later Sig himself begins to wonder out loud if he's really in love with Amitie as well. He's still mulling over this by the end of the chapter, prompting the following flustered internal response:
Amitie: Sig—! Were you thinking about the answer to that question the entire time throughout the huge fuss?! That’s so like Sig to be so off tempo, but it somehow makes me wanna run away, so stop it—!
    • In the novel Amitie and the Mysterious Egg, upon realizing that Sig is better with animals than her, Amitie quickly suggests that he should become the "father" of the baby bird Tama, which has just adopted Amitie as its "mother". Arle and Ringo quickly cut Amitie off, telling her to consider what she's implying (she fails to understand the implications), while Sig states he actually wouldn't mind being Tama's parent alongside Amitie - If Tama were a bug.
    • In chapter 3 of the novel Amitie and the Girl of Love, the idea of Amitie and Sig "sharing love" with each other gets brought up as a result of Amitie discussing Ally's catchphrase. Even Klug gets dragged in, but since he's the only one aware of the implications, he quickly tries to remove himself from the situation in protest. Sig continues to mumble about "sharing love with Amitie" up to the end of the chapter, which in turn makes Amitie flustered again and makes her blush.
    • Another novel, Sig's Secret, explains how Amitie's and Sig's friendship developed from their initial, loose connection as "kids who just happen to be in the same class", to the close relationship they seem to have in later games. In the process, there is plenty of ship teasing to be had, what with Amitie describing how she is slowly learning to love Sig's subtle smiles, and describing his blue right eye as "beautiful" after he regains it late in the novel.
    • Near the end of Sig's Secret, Amitie is about to give Sig a hug when he goes fast asleep. This may not sound like much, but hugging between a boy and a girl has a far more romantic connotation in Japan than it does in the English-speaking world.
    • In the Drama CD Vol. 4 track, The Phantom Thief With 24 Faces Appears!, the aforementioned phantom thief uses the cast's feelings to steal their precious belongings. The track begins with the thief already disguised as Sig, asking Amitie out on a date upon finding her. Amitie quickly becomes flustered at the sudden request. "Sig" asks if she's turning him down, but Amitie reassures him that she doesn't mind, though she continues to be disoriented and says that her heart wasn't prepared. She eventually accepts the invitation when he asks her come with him, and hold her hand out to him... before he steals her bracelet. When she later finds the real Sig, she accuses him of toying with her maiden heart before Ms. Accord arrives to inform everyone what really happened, leading her to apologize.
    • Later on in the same track, when the thief tries to confuse the group after being trapped by taking on their appearances, Sig was the only one who was able to tell the real Amitie from the fake one because of their close bond. At the end, Amitie asks Sig how he could recognize that she was the real Amitie, stating that she's anxious what he thinks of her, seeing as everyone else started fighting due to details that others pointed out when identifying their real versions. This makes Sig laugh a genuine, rare laugh free from his usual monotone. He surprises Amitie, leading her to ask why he's laughing, to which he answers, "It's a secret." This flusters her, making her wonder if he noticed that the real her was more likely to get zero points on a test, or was more scatterbrained, causing Sig to laugh even more as she begs him to tell her.
  • Schezo and Arle have subtext to spare, namely stemming from Schezo's unintentional innuendos around her, and the fact that they went from enemies to respectful rivals.
    • In the first Puyo Puyo game, the dialogue changes when played on hardest; specifically, Schezo's "I want you!" catch phrase becomes "I want all of you!". Arle, instead of being exasperated, is flustered, and comments how her heart is not ready for this. Arle honestly thought he wanted a physical relationship, until Schezo tells her he has no idea what she's talking about.
    • In The Final Test, Arle is distressed and lonely when Rulue and Schezo are gone, vowing to fight Phantom God in Schezo's name after getting a pep talk from Rulue. She even gives some choice words to Phantom God on how they're a murderer for killing him, and would never wish death on him despite dealing with his nonsense on a daily basis. She really cares about his survival and wanted to resurrect him, expressing relief learning he wasn't actually dead.
    • When Schezo meets Rulue in 15th, the two exchange pleasantries being familiar companions, to which Rulue comments that Schezo will be chasing Arle forever. Schezo inadvertently affirms it, saying that he "only desires Arle, nothing more."
    • 20th has multiple instances of Schezo blurring his desires for Arle's power.
      • When Schezo consults Risukuma for advice on how to catch Arle. The way he worded it, though, makes Risukuma think he's unable to confess his feelings to her, and tells him to be more forward and just spit it out. Schezo's response is to try (and struggle) to deny said feelings.
      • In the Dark Prince's story, Schezo claims, right in his face, that he will be the one to sweep Arle away and won't hand her over to him.
      • In Arle's story, after his "you will be mine" spiel, he comes along for the sheer fact that the Dark Prince is involved and won't allow him to defeat Arle before he claims her as his.
    • In the novel Everyone's Dreams, Coming True!?, when the A-Trio are about to set out to gather the Dream Mist, Schezo goes off on his own, and gets called an uncooperative loner by Arle. He refutes that by saying he loves [her], before Arle points out his verbal blunder.
  • There exists official art depicting Draco and Harpy holding hands. Interestingly, this couple is not implied anywhere else.
  • As far back as Compile's run, Witch notably tends to flirt with Schezo (accidentally or otherwise), flustering him a great deal. Arle outright asks Schezo if they're a couple in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.
  • Over the course of Puyo Puyo Tetris, it's implied that Tee might have developed feelings for Ringo throughout the events of the game, and the feeling is definitely implied to be mutual. Near the end, both are sad to see the other have to leave, and Ringo agrees for them not to say goodbye (since popping Puyos can sometimes take you to another dimension).
  • It's suggested that Ringo and Maguro might have a Childhood Friend Romance. In 20th Anniversary, Amitie and Risukuma ask Ringo why Maguro's handsome face isn't affecting Ringo. Ringo says she's seen it enough times that it has no effect on her, but Risukuma, being a Love Freak, senses there might be more to it than just that since the two have known each other for a long time.
  • Despite Marle and Ally's very short time of interaction during Tetris 2, they seem to hit it off immediately, to the point where Ally says this near the end of the side quest where they interact, with hearts in her eyes:
Ally: Let's express our love for each other! I LOVE YOU, MARLE!
