Out There is a live-action show produced by Sesame Workshop for Noggin's teen block, The N. (When the series started production, Sesame Workshop was a co-owner of the Noggin channel.) It was Sesame Workshop's first-ever Drama series, and it was aimed at an older audience than the Workshop's other shows. In other words, it's no Sesame Street, but it's still mildly educational.note

The show follows Reilly Evans, a high school boy from the USA. After his dad is arrested and his mom has a breakdown, Reilly is sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Australia. There, he works at the Wildspring Veterinary Clinic (owned by his aunt), where he meets new friends around his age: Aggie Thackery, Miller McKee, and Fiona McDaniel. The vet clinic's animal emergencies make up most of the show's drama.

Out There ran for two seasons. After it ended, the crew made another show for Sesame Workshop and Noggin: The Upside Down Show.

Out There features the following tropes:

  • Animal Lover: Everyone at the clinic likes animals, and Fiona definitely loves them. On top of working at the clinic, she's also a volunteer for NAWRA, a (fictional) animal rescue organization dedicated to saving injured native animals.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: In every episode, the main characters give direct-to-camera monologues.
  • Fish out of Water: Both Reilly (from Connecticut) and Aggie (from London) are out of their element when they're sent to Wollemi, which is a real-life country town in Australia.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Before his life was upended, Reilly was a rich kid without close friends.
  • Loner-Turned-Friend: Fiona was a loner who seemed to prefer it that way - to the point that she's nicknamed 'Fiona Alona'. As the show goes on, she becomes friends with the others at the clinic.
  • Multinational Team: Reilly is American, Aggie is British, and Miller and Fiona are Australian. The vet clinic recruits interns from around the world.
  • Parental Abandonment: Both of Reilly's parents are out of the picture for different reasons. His dad (an investment banker) gets arrested and his mom has a mental breakdown, landing her in an institution.
  • Proud to Be a Geek: Miller prefers being a geek, seeing himself as a stoic and philosopher.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: In Season 2, Reilly goes back to America, only for another American boy to arrive at the clinic: Tom Butler. Even though he fills Reilly's role, Tom has some notable differences, like being from Texas and lying about his past.
  • Thematic Theme Tune: The theme song ("Doin' What I Do") is about being yourself:
    I don't have to get a shirt
Just because you got a shirt
And even if I wore one who could look as good as you?
I'm not going to do a thing
Just because you did a thing
Maybe, maybe, maybe I don't want to be like you
