Distaff Counterpart wick check:

  • 6,126 wicks
  • Intended target of 79 wicks
  • Current laconic: "A new character from a derivative work with the same tropes but different gender."

The issue at hand is that Distaff Counterpart's current description restricts the gendered counterpart to derivative works, i.e. spinoffs, adaptations, fanfiction, etc, which is far more narrow than the current use (which includes works that have in-universe opposite-gender counterparts). Additionally, there may be some confusion with Gender Flip, with the only distinction in the description being "reverses roles based on gender, rather than cloning them," which is a very vague distinction.

Completed wicks: 79/79; potholes bolded. All wicks on a certain page are counted separately unless they refer to the same context. This check will include the redirect Spear Counterpart when such examples come up.

Correct (equivalent opposite-gender character in a derivative work)
  1. Film.Mothra: She is one of the most popular kaiju of all time. Whenever Godzilla is waning, Mothra is one of the classic monsters brought out to give a box office boost. She has been so popular that a Spear Counterpart was featured in a trilogy in the late 1990s, called Rebirth of Mothra. From what I can gather, Rebirth is something of a spin-off from the original canon? So I guess it counts?
  2. Film. The Wild World Of Batwoman: Batwoman, for Adam West's Batman; deadpan Comically Serious delivery and all.
  3. Series.Girl Code: It is a Distaff Counterpart and spinoff of Guy Code on MTV2. If an entire work can be considered a Distaff Counterpart, then I guess this counts, assuming all the roles line up.
  4. Trivia.Hylics: Instead of Wayne, the protagonist was a Distaff Counterpart called Decres. Decres still exists in the final game, as an alternate costume for Wayne. Old Wayne also appears, so it's likely that at one point Old Wayne was indeed the same Wayne from the first game. In the final version, it's more ambiggous. Talking about the potential sequel.
  5. VideoGame.Giana Sisters: Giana and Maria to Mario and Luigi, natch. Apparently, the game is infamous for ripping off Super Mario Brothers. Not sure rip-offs count as derivative works, but if so...

Character only exists in same work as counterpart
  1. Characters.Art Of Fighting 1: For all intents and purposes, she's basically female Robert; though the degree of similarity depends on the game. Particularly in the '97, 2000, and XI installments of King of Fighters series.
  2. Characters.Bunnicula: She is female counterpart of Toby Monroe. For context, this character's name is Mina Monroe, implying they're siblings.
  3. Characters.Continuum: Throughout the course of Season 2 and 3, he is revealed to be one to Kiera. They both are former soldiers with a CMR implanted in their brains, both are acting from a skewed view of morality based on their experiences in the future, both have super-powers granted from advanced technology, and both have young children that were erased from existence the moment they time-traveled.
  4. Characters.K Jungle: She and Saruhiko act as mirrors to each other in many ways, but near the end of middle school when she gets glasses, Misaki remarks with surprise—"Your glasses, don’t they look like Saruhiko’s?"
  5. Characters.Phineas And Ferb Youth: Carla, who is implied a relative of his. In Carl's folder. It's low context, but I get the gist.
  6. Characters. There Once Was An Avenger From Krypton: She's basically a female counterpart to Danny Phantom. In Dani Phantom's folder; assuming Danny is also in the fic, this goes here. It applies here anyway since she's also his counterpart in the actual show.
  7. Characters.Uncle Grandpa: A female Uncle Grandpa, obviously.
  8. Characters.Where On Earth Is Carmen Sandiego: To Al Loy. Low-context, but Dara and Al are partners.
  9. ComicBook.Action Comics: In issue #252 Trope Codifier Supergirl first showed up.
  10. ComicBook.Booster Gold: Michelle as Goldstar.
  11. Fanfic.Total Drama Legacy: Katherine is basically a female version of her father Ezekiel (as ironic as that seems, considering Ezekiel's elimination in Island was due to him making sexist comments). Like her father, she's a brown-haired, gray-eyed Homeschooled Kid raised on the Canadian prairie, and she also has her father's dress sense (green hoodie, blue jeans, and a toque with a pom-pom), thick Canadian accent, ability to speak multiple languages, social ineptitude, and she's even got a feral side!
  12. Film.Atomic Blonde: Lorraine has something of a rival in the unnamed KGB agent (Credited as "Soldier") with the same style of indestructability, bleach blonde hair, and monochromatic fashion that she keeps running into.
  13. Film. The Butter Cream Gang: The Buttercreamettes. A bit of a subversion as the older female members refer to themselves as members of the original gang, as opposed to this newer, girls-only gang.
  14. Garfield.Tropes T To Z: One strip has a blind date of Jon's named Gwen, who dresses as absurdly as he does on dates and finds him cute. Garfield even says "God made two of them!" Although she would have been a good recurring character, perhaps as a Distaff Counterpart of Jon, she was never mentioned again.
  15. PlayingWith.Affably Evil: Empress Evulz is an outgoing, charismatic, friendly and socially adept person. No idea why someone decided to gender-swap Emperor Evulz for one example, but this is the only place it seems to fit, since it was done intentionally and the Playing With page might technically be a "work".
  16. Radio. The Navy Lark: Of course The Master had a Distaff Counterpart in the form of the imaginatively named The Mistress (played by Heather Chasen with an equally OTT accent), although the character was actually a case of The Dragon Lady.
  17. Recap.Big City Greens S 2 E 25: Establishing Character Moment: Gabriella plotting to get back at Bill for changing her date plans with Cricket by pranking the snooty rich folk is what officially establishes her as Cricket's Distaff Counterpart.
  18. Recap.Dont Hug Me Im Scared Three: We briefly get to see a female Yellow Guy, which is his supposed "special one".
  19. RetCon.Superman: When she first appeared in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen, Miss Gzptlsnz was drawn with small, implike proportions similar to those of Mr. Mxyzptlk, of whom she is a Distaff Counterpart. After Superman: The Animated Series completely redesigned her into a tall, leggy redhead, artists began using this as her appearance in the comics as well.
  20. Series.Drake And Josh: Girls of the Week Tori and Carly are female versions of Drake.
  21. Series.VR Troopers: "Get Me to the Lab on Time" does this as a joke, where Percy's dream girl looks like him and is played by his actor in drag.
  22. Theatre.Mrs Hawking: Roberts deconstructs this with Rosaline Pembroke in Gentlemen Never Tell. On the surface, she's a female Justin Hawking— they're both bon vivant travelers with a taste for multiple romantic partners, witty, charming, and representatives of their families' respective financial firms. But Rosaline explains that for all their similarities, she's still a woman and thus constrained by society in ways Justin could never be. She takes him to task for this, pointing out that if she tried to do the things he did, her reputation would be utterly destroyed, whereas he is free of that worry. These characters interact in the same play.
  23. Theatre.Mystere: If Bebe Francois's performer is absent, his act/plot thread with the ball is played out by the female baby, Bebebe. In this case, Moha-Samedi gives her the toy snail to compensate for the loss of the ball, but she loses that too...
  24. VideoGame.Bravoman: Bravo Woman in design. Subverted power-wise as she's a Flying Brick rather than being stretchy. Often lampshaded.
Bravo Woman: Being derivative never looked so butt-kickingly good!
  25. WebVideo. The War Hawks: The whole idea behind the formation of the Lady Hawks Division The whole team is full of them. An Action Girl example.
  26. WesternAnimation.Monster Force: The Bride to her 'mate' Frankenstein. ZCE, but fits here.
  27. WesternAnimation.Moral Orel: Christina, to Orel. ZCE is a ZCE, but it fits here otherwise. I think.
  28. WMG.Freakazoid: Hey, Superman and Danny Phantom have cousins (or clones, in Danny's case) for Distaff Counterparts, so what's to say Freakazoid can't?
  29. YMMV.X23: In 1990, Marvel introduced a character called “Wolverina”, a female equivalent to Wolverine who presented herself as his long lost cousin, in the satirical What The..? series. She was a parody of Wolverine Publicity and the trope of long-running male superheroes being paired with younger, Distaff Counterpart sidekicks (i.e. Supergirl and Batgirl). Fourteen years later...

Confused with Gender Flip (character's gender is changed in adaptation and the original character does not coexist with them)
  1. DarthWiki.Open Blue: Das Reich von Seran - Fantasy Counterpart Culture to Great Britain and Nazi Germany In The Cavalier Years. Normally has a small chunk of the new world in its grasp. Avelion's hated rival in most settings and second most likely nation to survive a Continuity Reboot. Contrasts with Avelion's vast Zerg Rush-worthy numbers with fewer soldiers armed with Anachronism Stew weapons that in the real world had only just been conceived at the time. Ruled by a Distaff Counterpart of Adolf Hitler with Chess Master tendencies. Munchkin's choice. Wear red, for obvious reasons. Assuming that an Alternate Universe story could be considered some sort of adaptation of reality, then this Nazi-esque leader seems to be a Hitler Gender Flip.
  2. Fanfic.Quirk Of Fate: Spider-Woman is the most obvious one, but the second Doctor Octopus, the Scorpion, and Venom are all female in this version. I think this is a Gender Flip for most of these characters.
  3. WesternAnimation.Storm Hawks: The episode "Royal Twist" featured a "Princess and Pauper" story. Oh, and the pauper didn't exactly agree to the switch beforehand; rather, Princess Peregrine beaned Piper in the head with a book, dressed her up, and split town before she could wake up.

    Unofficial counterparts
  1. Characters.Survivor Vanuatu: To Chris. They're both boisterous blue collar workers from the Midwest who struggle to relate to their younger tribemates. They even work in the same field.
  2. Characters. We Never Learn: Essentially the male counterpart to Nariyuki's mom, Hanae. They are both Amazingly Embarrassing Parents being overly enthusiastic at the idea of their kids finding a significant other. With the wording, this doesn't feel intentional, but I could be wrong.
  3. Characters.Zero Zero Nine One: Mylene's teammates have their abilities inspired from the cyborgs from the Cyborg 009 manga, such as 009-4 having weaponry in her limbs like 004. The works have no relation to each other.
  4. ComicBook. The Dandy: Depending on who you ask, Hector Spectre is either an expy or a Spiritual Successor to an earlier character called Edd Chumley, who appeared in a strip called Meet Edd: He's A Ghost in The Beezer and Topper. Both strips involved headless ghosts in Elizabethan get-up with rural dialects and accompanied by a grey cat, both drawn by David Mostyn. The main difference was that Hector haunted a stately home, whereas Edd's home was said to have been long since demolished. It's likely that a different main character was created as Edd looked very much like a male version of Molly.
  5. Creator.Brian Hull: Has one in Anna Brisbin (For their voice impressions, voice acting gigs and love of Disney- they have collaborated 9 times!, and both did voice over work for the Osmo Super Studio drawing system for iOS devices (Anna in the Disney Princess version and Brian for the Mickey Mouse and Friends version)).
  6. Creator.Christina Ricci: In her child acting days she was both [The Rival] and a Distaff Counterpart to Macaulay Culkin. It seems illogical that Real Life examples could exist unless her persona is deliberately crafted to mirror Culkin's.
  7. Creator. The Weather Channel: Again, Jim Cantore. A distaff version can be found in Stephanie Abrams. I must assume at least that this is unintentional.
  8. IdiotHero.Anime And Manga: And before Toriyama had Goku, he had Arale of Doctor Slump, since she's basically Distaff Counterpart to Kid Goku.
  9. Laconic.Girlschool: The Runaways: New Wave of British Heavy Metal edition. Or, if Motörhead were women.
  10. LetsPlay.Masae Anela: Very clearly one of Chuggaaconroy. She has a lot of shared habits with his over-the-top commenting style. Helps that the two are really good friends.
  11. Magazine.Cosmopolitan: Just as Cosmopolitan is aimed at women, there are magazines that can be considered its mirror image aimed at men, such as Loaded.
  12. Music.Celtic Women: Has one in all-male Celtic group Celtic Thunder.
  13. MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic.Tropes Q To S: Recycled In Space: Show Within a Show Daring Do is Indiana Jones AS A PEGASUS MARE! The character is clearly a parody of Indiana Jones, but not an explicit one-for-one counterpart, nor is she an official counterpart.
  14. Recap.Player Two Start: Sailor Moon is brought to America with less Bowdlerisation, thanks to Toei rejecting DiC Entertainment's bid on account of how many Japanese video games were being brought over with little censorship. Instead, it's adapted by Saban Entertainment and The Ocean Group. It premieres in 1995 on Fox Kids, winning acclaim as a Distaff Counterpart to Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, but only the first two seasons are brought over due to fears of controversy over Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune's romantic relationship (especially as it would've been right after Ellen DeGeneres came out as a lesbian). Comparing works, maybe even in an in-universe context.
  15. Series.House Of Anubis: Villain/s search for the relic/s that will provide immortality. Also, they mistook "The Chosen One" when there are two girls born in July on the same date. Significant differences aside, Joy and Nina are like the Distaff Counterparts of Neville and Harry.
  16. Pantheon.Machinery: From Kokonoe Mercury's folder. The other two characters described are from Bleach and ''Mortal Kombat.
  17. WebVideo.Un Tio Blanco Hetero: Xeno Shenlong, another Spanish youtuber inspired by UTBH, modelled herself as something like a female version, with a mask and hood (although she is Asian, not white).
  18. Wrestling.Dean Ambrose: He's also drawn more than a few comparisons (especially with his promo style) to Brian Pillman or even a young Roddy Piper. Regarding this, Ambrose has said that he's watched so much wrestling in his life, from everywhere and from every time period, that more often than not, he has no realization that he's seemingly channeling any one wrestler. So he's gotten comparisons to, besides the aforementioned Pillman and Piper, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Terry Funk, Jake Roberts... it's an almost endless list because of his natural charisma, intense promos, and eclectic in-ring style. You could even call him the closest thing that the WWE's ever had to Mayumi Ozaki, the "Queen of Hell".

    Other misuse
  1. Characters.Street Fighter II: Signature Move: The Hyakuretsu Kyaku. The way it's used and the similar animation makes it a Distaff Counterpart to Honda's Hyakuretsu Harite. Did some Googling and the male's attack came after the female's attack, the former appearing in a 1994 game and the latter in a 1991 game. This would make the male's attack the Spear Counterpart. However, I could be wrong.
  2. Characters.X Statix: He's basically a gay male version of Ashley Crawford, aka Big Bertha of the Great Lakes Avengers; both of them are mutants who can inflate their bodies to enormously obese proportions, a state that grants them Super-Strength and Super-Toughness. Since this isn't the same work but exists in the same universe, I'm not sure how to classify this one.
  3. Film.Thirteen Going On Thirty: The film is Big, for girls.
  4. Film.Ziegfeld Follies 1945: Ziegfeld talked about “Glorifying the American girl”, so the film also has a number about the wonders of men, albeit with a way less fancy presentation. Huh?
  5. Franchise.Tarzan: See his expies Tarzan Boy and (as Distaff Counterpart) Jungle Princess. Refers to Jungle Princess examples as a Tarzan Distaff Counterpart, but it's actually just a gender-swapped variant of the Tarzan Boy trope. Not sure if tropes being called "Distaff Counterpart" is actually a form of misuse or not since it's so common, but...I think it is.
  6. Funny.Quantum Leap: While doubling as a minor bit of Nightmare Fuel, after Al gives Sam more info about Norma, he mentions her madien name was "Norma Bates"... causing him to abruptly realize her name is the Distaff Counterpart to Norman Bates. Al then repeatedly tells Sam to pretend he never said that.
  7. Literature. You Love Me: The Meerkat is one to Joe. She was obsessed with him and was convinced that he loved her too despite him never meaning to give her that impression. ?
  8. Music.Mary Janes Last Dance: You would be blameless if you immediately thought that the basic concept of a corpse being manipulated and escorted reminded you of Weekend at Bernie's. Has nothing to do with this trope.
  9. PlayingWith.Bitch In Sheeps Clothing: Alice is a Distaff Counterpart to A Nazi by Any Other Name, seems very nice, friendly, nonjudgmental, hard to believe that she could be mean, let alone a complete genocidal monster. She's elected into power through charisma and everyone thinks she'll make the world a better place, then Nightmare Fuel ensues as she proceeds to make Dolores Umbridge look like Mother Theresa. A Nazi by Any Other Name is not a gendered trope, so it cannot have a gendered counterpart.
  10. Recap. The Sopranos S 4 E 13 Whitecaps: This episode, it's Carmela who spends a good bit of time moping around the house in her robe and slippers. Sounds more like a standard role-reversal.

    Not enough context / murky
  1. Anime.Cute High Earth Defense Club Love: Akoya is prone to this in the online manga, a notable one (read "notable" as "hilarious") being a Spear Counterpart to Usagi meeting Luna. (Zundar gets Luna's part.) ???
  2. Characters.A Northern Dragoness: Aegon disparagingly calls her "Baelor with teats". With no other context, it's just a random in-universe comparison.
  3. Characters.Charlie The Unicorn: To the Millipede Queen. The issue with this example, beyond the lack of context, is that it's being applied to a male character. Spear Counterpart does exist as a redirect, technically making this inaccurate.
  4. Characters.Iris Wildthyme: To the Doctor.
  5. Characters.Survivor Palau: To Bobby Jon.
  6. Characters.Ze Pyromancers: Her blonde tentacle hair and fangirlishness overseeing Smashers up close give her a lot in common with Polod, albeit less troublesome. No idea who Polod is. He's not mentioned elsewhere from what I can see.
  7. ComicBook.Aztek: Subverted; in issue 8 there's a female training to be Aztek's "backup". She appears again in the Bad Future of JLA's "Rock of Ages" storyline. ...Where's the subversion?
  8. ComicBook.Witchblade: With many other Top Cow Productions series, most notably The Darkness, for obvious reasons. A Crossover example, for context.
  9. Fanfic.Show And Vampire: Kamen Rider She-Liger is this to Kamen Rider Liger. Also Kamen Rider Phantom to Kamen Rider Showa as they share the same armor. Not sure if they're in the same work or not...
  10. Fanfic.Weiss Reacts: Minato is this now that his little sister Minako is attending Beacon.
  11. SayMyName.Anime And Manga: And Guts's Distaff Counterpart from Claymore: "PRISCILLA!"
  12. Script. The Crappy Teen Years: arrives in the form of MDW, Something Now, Alt!Ynnead, Lady_Roem, Hecate_Angerboda, Thyssyde and Catgirl.
  13. ShockAndAwe.Comic Books: There's The Incredible Hulk villain Zzzax and his Distaff Counterpart Axon.
  14. Wrestling.Booker T: In Booker's WWE run, Stacy Keibler helped him win a match against Test. Booker then invited Stacy into the ring and persuaded her to do a "legaroonie" while wearing a short skirt. Booker enjoyed the ensuing Panty Shot as much as anyone in the crowd.
