House Targaryen

    Baelor Targaryen

King Baelor Targaryen, First of His Name

  • 0% Approval Rating: He's both this and an Universally Beloved Leader. The smallfolk love him because of his charities, his piety and his pacifism. The nobles despise him because of his fundamentalist faith and his pacifism.
  • Actual Pacifist: He has no fondness whatsoever for martial prowess, and it shows in his behaviour and ruling. Which means his more warrior-like vassals utterly despise him since they think he's a fop.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Not only he spurned his wife Daena's bed, his close friendship with the High Septon and lack of interest in fighting are interpreted by Jonnel as the proof he's a sword-swallower.
  • Egocentrically Religious: Obsessed with an interpretation of the Faith of the Seven that panders to his own Suicidal Pacifism and rejection of sexuality, ignoring that the Father, Mother, and Warrior are all among the Seven and ignoring how important a strong government and ensuring the continuation of the Targaryen lineage are to the future of Westeros.
  • The Fundamentalist: He lives for his faith alone. Which poses quite a problem since he's supposed to be a king rather than a septon, and more because he tries to push his faith to the Old Gods-worshipping Lord Stark.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: Daena accuses him of being this, outright telling him that his locking Elaena is "punishing her for being born a girl".
  • Hypocrite: Proclaims to follow the laws of the Seven, yet keeps his sisters locked up so they will remain pure (thus preventing them from being mothers) and orders his nobles not to take action against Dorne (which prevents them from meting justice for their murder of many Lords and heirs, including King Daeron).
  • Innocently Insensitive: He locks his sisters away because he thinks they would rather prefer kept pure - wrong! He proclaims there will be no more war with Dorne - letting their war crimes go unpunished and trampling over his vassals' pride. He confers the blessings of the Seven - upon a man who worships the Old Gods. He decides to bless Daena on her departure for her brand-new husband's castle - and ends pushing her Berserk Button so bad she slaps him in front of all the nobles.
  • The Load: His uncle Viserys rules the Kingdoms in spite of his stupid-ass decisions.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: He just won't stop doing it!
    • Locking his sisters actually made them despise him on the grounds no one likes to be shut in.
    • He managed to negotiate peace with Dorne by offering them recompense and forgiving their war crimes... which outraged every single one of his lords, weakening the Targaryen hold on the throne.
    • His "blessing" to his sister Daena is so offensive to her she explodes and delivers him a "Reason You Suck" Speech.
    • When he learned Aegon took a married woman called Megette as his lover, he forced him to send her back to her abusive husband, because it was sinful to bed a woman married to another man. Said husband killed her within a year.
    • His refusal to consummate his marriage to Daena and Rhaena has left Aegon and Naerys the only couple capable of producing legitimate Targaryen heirs, thus forcing Aegon to essentially rape Naerys in order to produce those heirs.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: He entrusts a key to Aemon and asks him to watch over it, even if it means neglecting Baelor's protection. His relatives are quite troubled by his insistance on the matter.
  • Pet the Dog: He intended to build a Great Sept as his Magnum Opus, but decided to consecrate the Sept to his late cousin Naerys instead, so as to honour her. He even promises her husband she will get a memorial besides the Mother's altar.
  • Stupid Good: He's so blinded by his faith's precepts of forgiveness and peace he makes extremely dubious rulings.
  • Too Dumb to Live: He's extremely lucky to have his uncle Viserys to smooth everything down or his lords would be openly rebelling.
  • Unfit for Greatness: Westeros would have been better served if he had been Locked Away in a Monastery, at least he would have belonged there.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: His first reaction when something is going wrong? He prays. Even when it's obvious it won't help at all.

    Viserys Targaryen

Viserys Targaryen, Hand of the King

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: While we don't have an in-depth perspective of Viserys's adulthood, the books show that he was a neglectful parent due to his duties as Hand of the King. Here, Viserys is shown to care for his children and his brother's children as well (except Baelor), and makes a genuine effort to raise his son Aegon to be a better man and ruler despite the latter's vices. This more hands-on upbringing as the added benefit of making Aegon a much nicer person compared to his book counterpart.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: In spite of harshly criticizing Aegon's behaviour, he's genuinely proud of him and immediately goes to support him when he breaks down over his wife's death and their newborn twins' unlikely survival.
  • Cool Uncle: He throws a song-worthy wedding for his eldest niece Daena, and allows her to take her baby sister Elaena with her as a handmaid. When he promised his brother he would care for his kids, he wasn't lying.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He's disgusted to see Baelor depriving his sisters of the opportunity to become wives and mothers after they were raised to desire it.
  • Foil: Basically Tywin Lannister with dragon blood; he has to endure his family's wacky hi-jinks which threaten to destroy his beloved realm. Unlike Tywin, however, Viserys makes an effort to be a much better father to his children and nieces despite their flaws.
  • It's All My Fault: Blames himself for Naerys' death, since he arranged her wedding to Aegon in order to avoid another Dance of Dragons.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Baelor has his head so far in the clouds he's awfully unsuited to be king. Viserys is King in everything except for the title.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: His daughter Naerys dies in childbirth.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Yes, he seems to be a good man, but every movement of his is calculated. Holding a big wedding for Daena? So everyone will see the royal family is still powerful and wealthy. The king insulted by his sister who's very much justified in her grudge? Merely advises her to do it privately. The youngest princess runs away to join her goodbrother's household? Forge a document that allows her to leave, both letting the crown save face and giving his niece the freedom she wants.
  • Rage Breaking Point: When the Master of Coin reveals how much coin Baelor intends to waste on his Great Sept, he smashes his cup and roars at the Small Council to leave the room. Even his son Aegon notes that he has never seen his father be so angry. However, he calms down considerably when Baelor decides to scrap the original plans for the Great Sept and instead rebuild the Sept of Remembrance in memory of Naerys, with the added benefit that it won't be nearly as expensive as the original plans.

    Aemon Targaryen

Aemon Targaryen, the Dragonknight

  • Big Brother Instinct: Before letting her go, he assures his cousin Daena she only has to send word she's in trouble to see him run to her rescue.
  • Book Dumb: He's not a fool, but his "duel" with Cregan shows he could use a lesson in physics or two, if nothing else to improve his swordplay.
  • Cain and Abel: He utterly loathes Aegon, mainly because of his treatment of Naerys.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: On the receiving end, in spite of wearing armor and wielding Dark Sister, courtesy of Lord Stark.
  • Did You Think I Can't Feel?: At one point, Daena lashes out at Aemon for failing to protect Daeron, to which Aemon furiously retorts that he was the one who had to watch his cousin and king die, and didn't even have the chance to mourn as the Dornish proceeded to toss him into a cell while Daeron's body wasn't even cold. Daena realises that Daeron's death weighed heavily on her cousin, even more than it did on her.
  • Foil: Just like his father is one to Tywin Lannister, he's one to Jaime Lannister. He didn't kill Baelor, but he still has to serve a Targaryen monarch from dubious sanity whom he not-so-secretly loathes.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Aemon is the Responsible Sibling, finding greater satisfaction in his dedication to duty and honour than he would in idle pleasure.
  • The Gadfly: He does slip some playful jibs to his cousin Daena when he's watching over her.
  • Loyal to the Position: He faithfully serves Baelor because a Kingsguard is supposed to be a perfect Knight in Shining Armor, and it means obeying to the king, even if you loath him.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He's horror-struck when he realizes he could have seriously harmed or even killed his brother while his infant niece was in the same room.
  • My Greatest Failure: Not only he couldn't save his King from the Dornish, he wasn't there to hear his last words.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: He will follow his duty, but even he can't stand Baelor.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: His relationship with Aegon needs a single glimpse to be classified as tumultuous at best, so when he agrees with him over the need for a regency, you know Baelor has well and truly lost it.
  • Technician Versus Performer: The Performer to Cregan Stark's Technician. Despite being reputed to be the best swordsman in Westeros, his duel with Cregan Stark showed that he had received his training in the courtyard and never from books. In contrast, Cregan learned how to fight using both theory and practice and the Lord of Winterfell's grasp of the fundamentals allowed him to effortlessly disarm Aemon by applying physics and leveraging.

    Aegon Targaryen

Aegon Targaryen

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Canon Aegon was a terrible brother to Aemon, a worse father to Daeron and an even worse husband to Naerys. Here, he's flawed but trying to be a better man at least and well aware of his problems.
  • Beard of Sorrow: He begins growing one after Naerys's death.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Despite his penchant for wine and women, Aegon is far from stupid and in his first POV chapter, he showcases a surprising amount of political savvy. While discussing with his father and brother matters of succession, he quickly conceals the nature of their conversation by talking about different types of wine as soon as they entered the throne room to prevent anyone from eavesdropping on them. In that same chapter, it was he who suggested hiring sellswords to fight against Dorne on the Crown's behalf, a move that would be subtle enough to bypass Baelon's peace treaty with Dorne but obvious enough to showcase the Iron Throne's might to its enemies.
  • Cain and Abel: Considers Aemon a sour prick. It's implied he's partially jealous because Aemon always makes Naerys smile.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Often at Baelor's expense.
  • Double Standard Rape: Female on Male: There's a disturbing glimpse of his first "relationship" as a fourteen-year-old, compared to his Marital Rape License for Naerys.
Aemon: I hear [Naerys] sobbing through the door when you visit her. [...]
Aegon: I did the same when Falena Stokeworth pushed me down, whispered sweet nothings in my ear and made me a man. [...]
Aegon: [thinking] ... and look at me now, willing to go forth and take what I want, just as she did.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He's taken aback and horrified when little Daeron bluntly asks if he likes making his wife cry.
  • Foil: To Tyrion Lannister, in that they both possess a surprising degree of charisma and political savvy despite their penchant for wine and women. The difference is that Aegon has benefits that Tyrion doesn't, such as being a martial and handsome man, as well as a father who genuinely cares for him despite his flaws. And unlike Tyrion who gets along well with his brother Jaime, Aegon has a tumultuous relationship with Aemon until Naerys dies.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Aegon is the fun-loving Foolish Sibling, both to Aemon and Naerys.
  • Freudian Excuse: His hedonistic behaviour can be attributed to his mother abandoning him and his siblings while he was still young, leaving them without a proper maternal figure. There's also the implication that he was sexually assaulted by Falena Stokeworth, with his penchant for sex being a coping mechanism for the trauma that resulted from said incident.
  • The Hedonist: Shamelessly enjoys good wine, women and hunts. He claims there's no point in life if not pleasure.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: He craves his wife and son's attention and affection. Unfortunately, his personality doesn't mesh with Daeron's, and Naerys would rather not see him coming close to him.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He justifies his philandering and insistence on sharing Naerys' bed by reminding his father and brother he's currently the only male Targaryen able to produce more heirs to the family.
    • After hearing how much gold Baelor intends to waste on his Great Sept, he almost begs his father to declare himself Regent for Life. Even Aemon thinks the idea is sensible.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: For all his numerous flaws, he genuinely wants to be a good husband and father. Which makes even more painful to see him fail every time.
  • Jock Dad, Nerd Son: One of the reasons why he doesn't manage to forge a genuine bond with Daeron, they simply don't have the same interests.
  • Marital Rape License: Even he admits that what he does to Naerys is rape in all but the legal definition, but with Aemon sworn to chastity and Baelor refusing to consummate his "marriages" with his sister-"wives", there is no other choice if the Tagareyn line is to be secured with legitimate heirs.
  • Nice to the Waiter: He has a Maester treat one of the smallfolk trackers that accompany him on a hunt and pays said tracker with a gold dragon.
  • Parents as People: He tries to be a decent father to Daeron. Unfortunately, their personalities refuse to mesh well.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: His second son Aelyx dies the day after his birth.
  • Really Gets Around: His ambition is not doing the eight - sleeping with a girl from every Kingdom - but doing the eight hundreds.
  • Real Men Cook: Elaena mentions he's actually able of preparing his food, since he enjoys hunting and it often leads him away from servants for one day or two.
  • Unwanted Spouse: To Naerys. In spite of his attempts to make her happy, she still cries and cowers in front of him.

    Naerys Targaryen

Naerys Targaryen:

  • Adrenaline Makeover: Pregnancy variant, Aegon finds her even more beautiful when heavy with his child.
  • Death by Childbirth: She dies giving birth to the twins Aelyx and Rhaenys. For extra pain, Aelyx dies a day after.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Word of God is that Aemon being away in the last phase of her pregnancy led to her depression worsening, which led to her death in an event she survived in canon.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Aegon disparagingly calls her "Baelor with teats".
  • In Memoriam: In-universe, Baelor decides to consecrate his Great Sept to her following her demise.
  • Morality Pet: In spite of their Awful Wedded Life, Aegon genuinely worries about her and tries to make her more comfortable and happy.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Her daughter Rhaenys. Not only Naerys very much loved the name, Aegon notes the baby girl looks very much like her mother.
  • Unwanted Spouse: She dislikes being married to Aegon, and begs him to stop bedding her.
    • Unfortunately, with Baelor refusing to consummate his marriages, that isn't an option.
  • True Blue Femininity: According to Aegon she usually wears blue clothes and when she is going to give birth she wears a blue dress that shines like a sapphire.
  • Virgin in a White Dress: Along with blue, she likes plain white clothes. Obviously, she's not a technical virgin anymore (having a young son and being pregnant), but she would rather stop having sex with Aegon.
  • Wrong-Name Outburst: At one point, Aegon came to visit her in her room to check on her condition and pregnancy. When he just entered her room, she thought he's Aemon mistakenly called him that.

    Daena Targaryen

Daena Targaryen

  • All Women Are Lustful: After her long confinement in her bedroom, she almost jumps on poor Jonnel at the first opportunity. And at her wedding, she doesn't waste time calling for the bedding, outright chaining her groom to the bed.
  • Berserk Button: Saying that she hates the Dornish with the burning passion of dragonfire would be like saying that the ocean is a bit wet.
    • Her long confinement has turned Baelor and the Faith of the Seven into this, to the point that she slaps Baelor when he turns his blessings for her and Jonnel into a set of insults.
  • Big Sister Instinct: When she learns she has a very good chance to escape Baelor's clutches, she promises Elaena she's not leaving without her.
  • Big Brother Worship: She adored her eldest brother Daeron, and is absolutely infuriated by his murder at Dornish hands and Baelor's refusal to avenge his death.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Was supposed to have this with Baelor but he wasn't interested. She could have married her eldest brother Daeron instead, but they decided they were Better as Friends.
  • Cain and Abel: Fantasizes at least twice about shooting Baelor.
  • Fluffy Tamer: Her cousin Aegon gifted her three wyverns at her wedding.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Being locked away made her a bit desperate to flee King's Landing and Baelor's madness, so much she's ready to throw herself at Jonnel and become anything he wants as long as he takes her in the North.
  • Hot-Blooded: Deconstructed when she insults the king in front of his vassals, weakening the royalty in the audience's eyes.
  • I Gave My Word: She thought about shooting Baelor from her balcony, but her father made her promise she would watch over her siblings.
  • I Have No Brother!: Does not consider Baelor to be her brother at all.
  • Innocently Insensitive: She teases Jonnel about his knowledge of pregnant women and babies, not knowing that he's still carrying a lot of trauma over the death of his first wife because of a miscarriage.
  • Lady Drunk: She grew a taste for wine in order to cope with her forced isolation.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's beautiful, she knows it and she's not afraid to use it to captivate her would-be husband.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Lays down a really brutal one on Baelor.
  • Rebellious Princess: Not only she likes archery and horse-riding, she doesn't hesitate to speak her mind. Jonnel Stark is quite grateful for this.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: When Jonnel reassures her she won't have to pretend to be something she's not with him, she's ready to marry him right now.
  • Tomboy Princess: So much her thanks were noticeably stilted when the Reach gave her dresses as a wedding gift.
  • Uptown Girl: She loses her royal title of princess to become the future Lady Paramount of the North.
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: Jonnel is stunned speechless when she's introduced to him.

    Rhaena Targaryen

Rhaena Targaryen

  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Daena often talks about her breasts being larger than hers. And when Aegon sees a courtesan in Lys dressed after her, he notes that she lacks his cousin's generous assets.
  • Character Development: Daena remembers she used to enjoy her food and beautiful clothes, which leads her to wonder if she actually likes to be locked away or seeks to please their brother.
  • The Fashionista: Her former wardrobe is described as "vibrant" and "big".
  • The Ghost: She's only alluded to by other characters.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: Her white dresses have embroideries of mothers, maidens and harpies, stars and all other figures and symbols of the Seven in golden thread.
  • Love Martyr: Resigning herself to every command of Baelor because she seeks to please him.
  • Taking the Veil: Her probable fate. Also the reason why she wasn't considered as a potential bride for Jonnel.
  • Virgin in a White Dress: Thanks to the influence of her brother Baelor, Rhaena's wardrobe is full of white dresses like his, possibly to show her purity.

    Elaena Targaryen

Elaena Targaryen

  • Big Sister Instinct: Inverted since she's the youngest princess; when Jonnel makes her sister cry, she verbally tears him a new arsehole.
  • Chocolate Baby: Possibly. As Donnel Arryn points out, both her parents had the trademark silvery Targaryen hair... so where did her golden skunk stripe come from?
  • Good with Numbers: She mentions her gift for sums as one of her fortes.
  • Important Haircut: She sheds her long braid and dyes her hair black to escape the Red Keep.
  • Lady-In-Waiting: To her eldest sister Daena.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: The only thing she does is to put on some clothes worn by common people and give herself an Important Haircut. This doesn't disguise her violet eyes, and her first alias is too close to her name. Fortunately, Daena and Jonnel give her some advice.
  • Pillow Pregnancy: Daena stuffs her dragon egg under her shirt to make her peasant disguise less paper-thin.
  • Security Blanket: Her gold-and-silver dragon egg is her most prized possession, the only thing she takes with her when she decides to run away.
  • She Is All Grown Up: Daena remembers her as a fairly unattractive child, but now that she's on the cusp to maturity, her beauty becomes more apparent.
  • Shipper on Deck: She muses Rhaena would be the perfect bride for Baelor. Chaste, pious and sweet, everything he expects from a woman, right?
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Along with Cregan Stark, she helps her sister and new goodbrother to avert Poor Communication Kills. She's also shown enjoying a strategy game and cunningly uses Cregan's own information-gathering tactic against him.

House Stark

    Cregan Stark

Lord Cregan Stark, Lord Paramount of the North

  • Affluent Ascetic: Being one rung below the royal family, he still prefers simpler dinners - pork roasts and light entertainment - to unnecessarily lavish events like the dinner at Darry Castle.
  • BFS: Wields the Valyrian Greatsword, Ice, to great effect in his duel with Aemon.
  • Foil: Unlike Ned Stark, Cregan is extremely savvy about the Court's workings, quite hard on his son Jonnel and generally more grizzled about life. Just like Ned Stark, he holds honour as very important, feels contempt for the South and hides very well his ferocity under a benign mask.
    • He is also this to Rickard Stark, another Northern lord with ambitions regarding the realm below the Neck, as well as hinting at a possible marriage with a Riverland house. Unlike Rickard, however, he chooses to forge ties with House Darry, rather than House Tully.
  • Good Is Not Nice: When he married Alysanne Blackwood, he knew this house had betrayed the crown and as such, he asked all their provisions for winter as a dowry, leaving them to starve. Damn cold, man.
  • Guile Hero: He bribed the palace officials to be the only one presenting a request to the king for the day and is implied to have blackmailed the High Septon into helping him to force Baelor to fulfil the Pact of Ice and Fire.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: He's charmed by Elaena's wits, musing that he finds more enjoyable to connect with her than his own daughters.
  • No Sympathy: He dragged his barely-widowed son to the South to force him to remarry without letting him grieve. When Jonnel meekly tries to delay by suggesting his intended bride may be unpalatable to watch, Cregan retorts he will have to bed her with his eyes closed.
  • Not So Above It All: As disdainful as he is towards the pampered Southern lords, he still offers his input to Aegon's scathing letter to Dorne. He also gives Elaena the measurements of his son's wrists when she went to get some Kinky Cuffs for Daena and Jonnel's bedding ceremony.
  • Old Soldier: His age shows in his experience and skill. When he duels Aemon Targaryen, the Dragonknight has armor and a Valyrian sword while the Lord Stark only has a pair of duelling mittens and Ice. The fight lasts a few seconds and Aemon wasn't the winner.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: His son Rickon was killed in Dorne, and he's pissed because he's not allowed to avenge him.
  • Tough Love: He went apeshit on Jonnel's arse after learning he planned to neglect his brand-new wife in favour of the Wall and ordered him to talk with her.

    Jonnel Stark

Jonnel Stark

  • Amazon Chaser: Very much grumbles over the prospect to marry a "delicate Southron flower", lamenting he would rather have a Mormont girl instead. His elated sigh was audible when Daena showed her true colours as a Tomboy Princess.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Just before the friendly duel between his father and Aemon, he quietly points to Daena that the match-up is quite unfair. And while we are at first lead to believe that he thinks his father has no chance off victory, turns out he actually meant the duel would be unfair for Aemon and he was 100% sure that his father would utterly outclass Aemon to the point that always saw his father's easy victory as the ultimate Foregone Conclusion it ended being. His reaction to his father utter schooling of Aemon is basically a wryly amused "Called it" in comparsion to the Stunned Silence everyone else watching the duel had.
  • Composite Character: CaekDaemon explains in the Author's Notes that he is effectively this for Brandon, Ned and Benjen Stark, having Brandon's passions and fire, Ned's sense of duty and moral compass and Benjen's playfulness and loyalty.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: He's acutely aware of his betrothed's gorgeous looks.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely: Extremely surprised when he sees himself in his wedding finery and realizes he actually looks worthy of a princess.
  • His Heart Will Go On: Robyn's death emotionally wrecked him to the point he can't stand to be intimate with Daena beyond their bedding night. After being lambasted by his father, he manages to explain her why he neglected her, making the first step to truly move on.
  • It's All My Fault: He can't help but think he killed his first wife by impregnating her in spite of knowing her body couldn't handle it.
  • The Mourning After: His wedding to Daena happens barely months after he buried Robyn. His struggle to properly grieve and move on heavily weighs on him, impacting Daena with the ripples.
  • Nice Guy: When his would-be fiancee confesses she will do anything he wants as long as he saves her from her brother, he immediately assures her she's going to be safe and free to be herself with him.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage:
    • He never fell in love with Robyn Ryswell, but he certainly liked her enough to consider her a friend.
    • So far, he seems well-suited to Daena but needs reminders he has to work on his relationship with her. Fortunately, he listens to advice.
  • Poor Communication Kills: His inability to talk about his lingering trauma from Robyn's death almost ruined his second marriage before it had a chance to truly begin. Cregan almost kicked his arse over it.

    Robyn Stark

Robyn Stark, née Ryswell

  • Alliterative Name: Before her wedding, she had this.
  • Death by Childbirth: Downplayed, she contracted blood poisoning after a miscarriage, and suffered for a long time before dying. Sadly realistic, since childbirth in the Dark Ages was often a messy, drawn-out enterprise.
  • Foil: To Lyanna Stark, since she died in such a way - cookie points for Lyanna's Death by Childbirth in the TV series - a male Stark was left extremely traumatized over it and struggles with her memory.
  • The Lost Lenore: Her demise strongly impacted Jonnel and influences his relationship with his new bride.
  • My Nayme Is: Robyn.
  • Posthumous Character: She's barely buried when the story kicks in.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: If the poor girl had lived, Jonnel wouldn't have been free to marry Daena, derailing the canon.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: From beyond the grave; Jonnel feels so bad over his perceived responsibility in her awful demise he starts to destroy his second marriage.

House Manderly

    Torrhen Manderly

Lord Torrhen Manderly, Master of Coin

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: He was unceremoniously dismissed by the just-come-of-age Aegon III at the end of Fire & Blood. Here his relationship with the Iron Throne is amicable enough that he remains on the Small Council.
  • Dirty Old Man: When Elaena disguises herself as a pregnant servant, her cover story is that Lord Manderly put his bastard in her.
  • Generation Xerox: Is every bit as corpulent as the Manderlys in the canon series.
  • Named After Someone Famous: Likely named after Torrhen Stark, the King Who Knelt.
  • Number Two: Served on Aegon III's Regency Council in the past.
  • Oh, Crap!: Becomes very nervous on having to explain the expenses for the Great Sept to Viserys.
  • Patriotic Fervor: For the North. Out of all the nobles present to witness the duel between Prince Aemon and Lord Cregan, he is the only one to cheer for Lord Cregan.
    "Winterfell! Now and always!"
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Eases the pressure of Baelor's expenditure for the construction of the Great Sept on the royal treasury, first by lowering the price considerably, and then arranging seven payments made over a period of time.
  • Retired Badass: Was a commanding officer for Queen Rhaenyra's faction in the Dance of the Dragons. Time and peace have left him old and portly.

House Darry

    Raymond Darry

Lord Raymond Darry of Darry

  • Conspicuous Consumption: Cregan notes the expenditures made in decorating Darry, from priceless Essosi artworks to immaculate silverware to keeping musicians on staff to serving swan and peacock.
  • Foil: Has more than a few similarities with Tytos Lannister; both of them came to power unexpectedly and both spend enormous amounts of money trying to earn the approval of others - Tytos with his generous loans, and Raymond with decorating Darry.
  • Lord Country: His holdings shares his surname.
  • Unexpected Successor: He had three older brothers, all of whom died in the Dance of the Dragons, leaving him the inheritor to Castle Darry.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: He openly craves the approval of his peers, to the point that the faintest word of praise leaves him weak at the knees.
