Though the generic classes are not the focus of the games, they still have a backstory and are still in integral part of gameplay. This page is dedicated to the classes and Worldbuilding surrounding them.

Humanoid Classes

- Debut: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
- Kill It with Ice: In the third game.
- Mighty Glacier: In contrast to Valkyries, their Evilites revolve around defense.

- Walking Shirtless Scene: Starting with Disgaea 2.
- War God: Follow the deity Grandell, who they must make a pact with to become Warriors. Oddly enough, Grandell becomes the name of the highest tier warriors in Disgaea D2, who are likewise referred to as gods of war.

- Crippling Overspecialization: Skulls can cast the strongest magic, but lord help you if they run out of SP.

- Weapon Specialization:
- Wizarding School
Mage (Magician, Witch)
- Debut: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
- Can't Catch Up: In titles that use the Evility system, Witches find their SP-frugality entirely overshadowed by the raw might of their Spear Counterpart come the post-game.
- Cute Witch
- The Ditz: A personality option.
- Squishy Wizard: They can cast spells longer than the Skull due to their SP-conserving Evilities. Shame if they take a hit, though.

- Straight Gay: A Personality option.
- Training from Hell: Self inflicted, no less.
- Weapon Specialization:
Fight Mistress (Martial Artist, Brawler)
- Debut: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
- All Monks Know Kung-Fu
- Bare-Fisted Monk
- Counter-Attack: Their Evilities are generally focused on nullifying/mitigating enemy Counterattacks.
- Girlish Pigtails
- Glass Cannon
- Meaningful Name: Nirvam means "initiation to secrets," presumably a corruption of Nirvana.
- Weapon Specialization:
Archer
- Debut: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
- The Fettered: Their war against the opposite gender was fueled in-part due to them being this.
- Grim Up North: Barde. Subverted as they are generally kind huntresses, possibly some of the nicer things in the Netherworld.
- Irony: Ice is their worst affinity.
- Ojou Ringlets: Their hairstyle in Disgaea: Hour Of Darkness (as well as Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom)
- Girlish Pigtails: Their hairstyle in Disgaea 2.
- One-Gender Race: Always Female.
- Petite Pride: Take pride in being flat.
- Weapon Specialization:
- The World Tree: The tree in the center of the village and where the young archers are born.

- Death from Above: The Ranger's primary Evility gives them a damage bonus against enemies at a lower elevation.
- Everyman Has His Price/Only in It for the Money
- One-Gender Race: Always Male.
- One-Shot Character: They haven't been seen or mentioned in any form beyond 3. They were brought back in 7.
- The Unfettered: Their war against the opposite gender was fueled in-part due to them being this.
- Weapon Specialization:
Gunner
- Debut: Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
- Awesomeness by Analysis: Their evil eye allows them to see the target's weaknesses.
- Cowboy: they sure do look the part.
- Expy: Replace the cowboy gear with military fatigues and you've got the Soldier class from Makai Kingdom.
- The Gunslinger
- Hired Guns
- Irony: Gunners are implied to generally work alone, yet most of their Evilities are centered around improving their allies' Combo attacks.
- Kill It with Ice
Gunslinger
- Expy: Put the Merchants of Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom in a Gunner suit and this is the result.
- The Gunslinger: Exactly What It Says on the Tin.
- Intrepid Merchant
- Kill It with Fire
- Meganekko
- Money Grinding: Most of their Evilities revolve around amassing HL.

- Cat Girl

- Five-Finger Discount: in Disgaea D2 they have a skill that mimics the stealing hands.
- Gender Flip: Initially started as male. They became female from Disgaea 2 onwards.
- Impossible Thief/Video Game Stealing: Nothing, not even the laws of physics can stop those thieves from stealing memories, emotions and possessions alike.
- Kill It with Ice
- Phantom Thief: one of their personality types during character creation.
- Classy Cat-Burglar: Another personality type.
- The Prankster: The third personality type. (At least in Disgaeas D2 and 5)
Strider (Scout)
- Debut: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
- Adorably Precocious Child
- Curious as a Monkey
- Geo Effects
- Mechanically Unusual Class: The only class in all of Disgaea to have an interactive skill.note Said skill's summon-range is weirdly reliant on their Staff Weapon Mastery.
EDF Soldier
- Debut: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
- Armies Are Evil
- The Faceless: Subverted. You can make out some semblance of a face in their portrait if you really squint.
- Guide Dang It!: You unlock the class by achieving 50 Weapon Mastery with the Gun. Given Weapon Mastery is a tedious climb even with 1900 Armsmasters, you'd think they were an enemy-only class with how long it takes.
- Gun Nut
- Long-Range Fighter: The game makes no attempt at all to hide an EDF Soldier's gift with a Gun.
- Space Suits Are SCUBA Gear
- Vader Breath: Outside of one cutscene, all we get out of the average EDF soldier is off-putting breathing through their helmets.
- The Voiceless: The only generic unit in the game with no voice-clips.
- Weak to Magic: Have the lowest RES aptitude out of anything creatable. Pit them against mages at your own risk.
Geomancer (Wiseman)
- Debut: Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
- Cool Old Guy: A subversion, the Geomancers are as old as they act, but are way Younger Than They Look.
- Geo Effects
- Rapid Aging
- Rule of Cool: The only reason they have even a semblance of Fist Mastery.
- Troll: They are always thinking of ways to make other people's lives miserable. This amuses them.
- Weapon Specialization:
- Younger Than They Look
Omnyo Monk
- Geo Effects: Can control them.
- Star Power
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: For Geomancers.
Sorcerer
- Anti-Armor: The majority of their Evilities are designed around nullifying enemy benefits and lowering defenses.
- Blue-and-Orange Morality: They believe spreading despair is a divine duty.
- Damage-Increasing Debuff: Their native Evility in Disgaea 5.
- Skeleton Motif: Never seen without their trademark skull-shaped helmets.
- Status Effects: They have all the status ailment spells in the series (except maybe Charm)
- Hope Crusher: Their Modus Operandi. They also worship the god of despair Dolvalky.
- Hypno Fool: One of their Personality options.
- Weapon Specialization:
Magic Knight (Knight, Rune Knight)
- Debut: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
- Complacent Gaming Syndrome: Until Disgaea 5, next to nothing beat a fully-kitted-out Staff-using Magic Knight in raw damage output.
- Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: Their Evilites are built around exploiting the enemy's weakness.
- Honor Before Reason
- Magic Knight: Duh.
- Jill Of All Trades: Can fight and cast in accord. The later titles generally incentivize the "Magic" over the "Knight" part, though.
- Mechanically Unusual Class: Disgaea 5 gives the Magic Knight elemental variations of the Sword's weapon skills should she equip one.
- Weapon Specialization
Ninja
- Debut: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
- Fragile Speedster: Can't take a hit 'cause they're too busy dodging them. Their Evilities center exclusively around the "Speed" part.
- Game-Breaking Bug: In the ports of the original game, Ninja can actually evade your healing if you have Ally Effects switched off.
- Glass Cannon: Ninja are generally powerful but only slightly less frail than the resident Mages. But that's what the high Speed's for.
- Kill It with Ice
- Scarf of Asskicking
- Status Effects: In addition to what the sorcerer has, they can use debuffs as well.
- Undying Loyalty: Ninja were originally unfettered mercenaries until King Krichevskoy molded them into an uber-loyal society of bodyguards.
- Weapon Specialization:
Kunoichi
- Debut: Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
- Fragile Speedster: Even moreso than the Male Ninja. They are the fastest in the netherworld and often compared to Panthers.
- Herd-Hitting Attack: What separates the Kunoichi from her Spear Counterpart is her ability to evade these as opposed to attacks right next to her.
- Kill It with Fire
- Scarf of Asskicking
- Status Effects: They can debuff enemies just like their male counterparts.
- Utility Party Member: Many of the Kunoichi's Evilities in the later games emphasize Item World travel.
- Weapon Specialization:
Samurai
- Debut: Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
- Crisis Makes Perfect: Their primary hook is their ability to One-Hit KO a target when their HP's low enough. Come the Post-Game, this ability is entirely useless.
- Gender Flip: In the original PS2 version of Disgaea 2, where they replaced their female counterparts from Disgaea 1. This changed when both Samurai appeared in Disgaea 3 and the Lady Samurai were added into the PSP port of Disgaea 2.
- Kill It with Ice
- Samurai
- Undying Loyalty
- Weapon Specialization
Lady Samurai (Shrine Maiden)
- Debut: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
- Duel Boss: Their primary ability is being one, gaining a damage bonus when they're only attacking one opponent. Disgaea 5 takes this a step further by having two of the Lady Samurai's Evilities centered around bonuses from engaging unique units on the map.
- Hime Cut: Given that their class is rooted in ideas of Japanese culture, it is fitting that they have such a traditional hair style. It works for both Lady Samurai and Shrine Maiden.
- Miko: Invokes the general design of one.
- Samurai
- Sarashi: Her gi is always open, so naturally she has this to cover her breasts.
- Undying Loyalty
- Weapon Specialization
Masked Hero
- Affectionate Parody: They're a Super Sentai / Power Rangers pastiche.
- All the Other Reindeer: Most demons find Masked Heroes weird even by Netherworld standards and tend to give them a wide berth. Prinnies like them though.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: More emphasis on "Moron" than "Badass," but they're a class for a reason.
- Fragile Speedster: Emphasis on "fragile". One of their Evilites even makes them a One-Hit-Point Wonder in exchange for moving five extra panels.
- Dirty Coward
- Flight
- Henshin Hero
- Heroes "R" Us: There's an entire guild of them.
- Lethal Joke Character: In Disgaeas 3 and 4 their Trick Move Evility increases evasion by 10% per panel moved, with high Movement to match. While Disgaea D2 nerfed the Evility, his high movement range and Flight is still useful for item grinding.
- Miles Gloriosus
- Utility Party Member: They're all about Item World travel and choke-points.
Beastmaster
- Debut: Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
- The Beastmaster: You don't say?
- Also what their Evilities are centered around.
- Jill Of All Trades: They're middle-of-the-road as far as physical fighting goes, but they get the job done - especially when working in tandem with Monsters.
- Shout-Out: Their hairstyle and default colors bring to mind Knuckles.
- Stripperiffic
- Undying Loyalty: Generally they do not trust people, but when they do find somebody that they trust, they will follow them forever.
- Weapon Specialization
- Wild Child
Cheerleader (Idol)
- Dance Battler
- Odd Friendship: Cheerleaders get along really well with Sorcerers despite their clashing ideologies.
- Status Buff: Their specialty.
- Idol Singer: Implied.
Heavy Knight (Armor Knight)
- Debut: Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
- Can't Catch Up: A Heavy Knight's massive defense generally goes the way of the dinosaur come the late Post-Game, where One-Hit KO is the strategy de-jure.
- Knight in Shining Armor: The armor's black but it's shiny enough.
- No Mouth: Only the top half of a Heavy Knight's face is ever shown.
- Stone Wall: High defense, low everything else.
- 24-Hour Armor
Armor Knight
- Debut: Disgaea Dimension 2
- Action Girl
- Balance Buff: The Armor Knight in Disgaea 5 is more viable for post-game compared to previous versions due to certain Evilities, general improvements to defensive play and the ability to further hone a character's stats.
- Bodyguard Babes: Is a babe and a bodyguard.
- Knight in Shining Armor
- Sadist: A personality option.
- Stone Wall
- 24-Hour Armor
Celestial Host (Angel)
- Debut: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
- Combat Medic: Their role from 2 onwards, trading some stats for innate flight movement and various support-oriented Evilities.
- Dude Looks Like a Lady: Some of the angels had male voices in the original Japanese voices to indicate that there are male angels in Celestia, a trend which was continued by Main Hero B. In English, all such angels are still given female voices. Note that this is before Disgaea D2 introduced the male Angel class.
- Elemental Barrier: Later games turn the Angel into a living one, with most of their Evilities oriented toward improving allies' elemental defense.
- Magic Knight: They have access to both offensive and healing magic and are fairly proficient with both in close range combat. In the original game, they also have the Magic Knight's innate ability to cast after a normal attack.
- Our Angels Are Different
- The Paladin: Their highest tier is called this.
- The Pollyanna: A personality option.
- Prestige Class: Alongside the Majin in the original game, yes. They're a Magic Knight but superior in every conceivable way. They became more distinct in the following titles.
- The Stoic: Especially in Disgaea 1, where they were borderline Emotionless Girls. Later games tone this down. Disgaea D2 gives them a personality type that is way more childish than stoic.
- The Fundamentalist: Believes that angels are always right, meaning anyone who opposed them is their enemy. And if they believe in something, it will be impossible to change their mind.
- Weapon Specialization:
Angel
- Debut: Disgaea Dimension 2
- Flight
- Magic Knight: They have access to both offensive and healing magic and are fairly proficient in close range combat.
- Master of None: They can do just about everything, they'll just be mediocre at it.
- Our Angels Are Different
- Sadist: A personality option.
- Status Buff: They're a living one in later titles, their Evilities centered around giving allies next to them various perks.
Bouncer
- Badass in a Nice Suit
- Damage Sponge: A very literal case. Unlike Heavy Knights, the Bouncer's Evilities let him soak up allies' taken damage rather than protect them directly.
- Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has an X-Shaped scar on the forehead.
- Mighty Glacier
Battle Suit
- Awesome, but Impractical: The Battle Suit has decent stats, but their first two innate Evilities do way more harm than good most of the time.
- Deadly Upgrade: Their Unique Skill "Run Wild" gives them one, restoring them to peak condition and doubling their stats...only to kill them in 3 turns.
- Expy: Of the EDF Soldiers from the first game.
- One-Shot Character: Hasn't appeared anywhere outside of Disgaea 4.
- Powered Armor
- Self Destruct: Their main Evility lets them perform this when their HP's below 10%.
- Also the function of their first Unique Skill, which turns them into a Glass Cannon before destroying them 3 turns after.
- Token Human: in Disgaea 4 until the Medic class arrived.
Android
- Cyber Cyclops: They have a radar in front of their eyes.
- Cyborg: The player Androids are a Valkyrie subjected to Unwilling Roboticisation.
- Master of None: Their Apititudes are pitiful and they can only learn one or two skills per weapon.
- Non-Indicative Name: They're actually cyborgs rather than Androids.
- One-Man Army: Their first Evility is even called this.
- Most Fanfic Writers Are Girls: The first thing an Android does when you create one is make a Val/Fen slash fic.
- Joke Character: Despite a useful Evility or two, they are by-and-far the weakest class Disgaea 4 has to offer.
- Lethal Joke Character: If the Android is the last unit available to summon in battle, they get a tremendous boost to their stats. Then again, you never want to be in this situation.
- Robot Girl
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Of the past games' Majin class.
- Weapon Specialization: Can use all of them...terribly.
Professor
- Badass Arm-Fold: Their battle stance.
- Canon Immigrant: Like the Berserker, the Professor first appeared in Makai Kingdom.
- Star Power: Can learn most of the Star spell-line innately.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Fulfills the same role as the Cheerleader. (Support magic that boosts stats, movement, throwing range and such)
- Utility Party Member: A Professor's role is buffing allies and making darn sure those buffs stick.
- Mad Scientist: One of their tier names. Also a personality option.
Medic
- Combat Medic: Literally a Healer that can swing a sword.
- Jack of All Stats: She has decent aptitudes in everything but speed and is good with most weapons. (Though she can only learn sword skills naturally)
- Hospital Hottie
- The Medic: The 2nd last class in this page sharing names with tropes.
- Switch-Out Move: One of the Medic's Evilities lets her "Send" allies back to the Base Panel.
- Weapon Specialization:
Necromancer
- Back from the Dead: They can revive themselves as zombies...on the enemy's side.
- Elegant Gothic Lolita
- Mechanically Unusual Class: The Necromancer's Evilities revolve around her ability to turn killed enemies into neutral Zombie units. This can double grinding gains, since killing these Neutrals pays out the same EXP and Mana as whatever they were before.
- Necromancer: The absolutely final class that by coincidence shares a name with a trope.
- Star Power: Learn all of the Star spells on their own.
Brute Fighter (Berserker)
- Blood Knight
- Canon Immigrant: Like the Professor, was originally a class in Makai Kingdom.
- Dumb Muscle: Literally. One of their Evilities increases their attack power when they're afflicted with Amnesia.
- I Fight for the Strongest Side!
- Lightning Bruiser
- Kill It with Fire
- Powerful, but Inaccurate: One of their Evilities raises their Critical Hit rate to maximum, but caps their Accuracy at 70%.
- Weapon Specialization
- Violence Really Is the Answer: Literally. They communicate by fighting.
Sinner
- Debut: Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
- Chained by Fashion
- The Load: Every other melee class has the Aptitudes/stats to wield Fists better than they do and their innate ability becomes absolutely useless once you're strong enough to avoid counter-attack wars with enemies. They're oddly Resistant to Magic for a physical class but that's their only redeeming quality.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: To the Martial Artists. It is probably telling that the redesigned Male Healer in Disgaea 3 looks very much like the Sinner.
- Walking Shirtless Scene
- Weapon Specialization: Or rather weapon of no choice.
- Good Old Fisticuffs: Their shackles prevent them from using any other weapon effectively.
Maid
- Attractive Zombie: They're nowhere near as ugly as the game's actual zombies.
- Butt-Monkey: Hard-wired into everything about them.
- Creepy Housekeeper
- The Ditz: Maids' rotten brains make them this most of the time. Also a Personality option.
- Happiness in Slavery: Despite their morally-bankrupt origins, Maids are generally pleasant to be around and don't seem troubled by their situation.
- Item Caddy: Yes.
- Master of None: They're designed more for assistance rather than direct combat, so their Aptitudes are pretty lacking. On the plus side, this means they can do basically anything without suffering too badly. The game nudges you toward making them a Long-Range Fighter, though.
- Undying Loyalty: A Personality option.
- Utility Party Member: The game's codifier. Maids have Evilities centered around the enhancement/preservation of consumable items. A Maid with most of their native Evilities is crucial to spreading your farmed stats around.
- Weapon Specialization: They can use basically anything. The game associates them with guns, though.
- Yandere: A Personality option.
Dark Knight
- Elite Mook: In-universe and in gameplay. A lot of people want them in their ranks because they're just that good. Their physical Aptitudes are top-tier for generic units and they have an innate 3X3-panel skill.
- Herd-Hitting Attack: Their innate Evility causes whatever attack they use to affect nearby targets too, (Think the "Pierce" Evility, but slightly more range) turning everything they do into one of these.
- Life Drain: One of their Special Moves lets them absorb HP equivalent to the damage they cause. It's not all that useful, but it's there.
- Mighty Glacier: The best example in the game by far. They can't move that far, but given their sheer amount of weapon options and raw strength, they don't really need to. Their Evilities reflect this too, varying in effect but generally centering around their already high physical stats.
- Experience Penalty: While their stats are amazing, Dark Knights, Pirates and Sages take longer to level up than other classes. If you're utilizing the Cheat Shop and Statisticians though, it's only noticeable if you're looking for it.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Super-high (physical) stats? Prestige Class? Backstory pertaining to off-screen strength so massive it makes Baal seem tame? They aren't Majins, are they?
- Weapon Specialization: Anything other than Staves or Guns works for them.
Sage
- Born from Plants
- Diminishing Returns for Balance: There's little reason to improve the Land Decimator Skill beyond Level 4 or so given it never gains an extra power boost. That just increases the SP cost for no reason.
- Experience Penalty: While their stats are amazing, Sages, Dark Knights and Pirates take longer to level up than other classes. If you're utilizing the Cheat Shop and Statisticians though, it's only noticeable if you're looking for it.
- Herd-Hitting Attack: Their innate Evility gives them a damage bonus depending on how many enemies they're hitting. Stuffing a Sage full of multi-target skills is an option.
- See also: Their Land Decimator attack, which hits the whole map.
- Long-Lived: Sages have ludicrous lifespans. A Sage with this Personality says she stopped counting her age 10,000 years ago.
- Magical Girl
- Nerf: The Sage's Land Decimator skill hits every unit on the map (Including allies if you're not careful), more than once with certain Evilities. To compensate, its accuracy caps at 50% and its power never escalates past G.
- Prestige Class: Like the Dark Knight and Pirate, Sages are end-game magic-users that outshine their contemporaries in starting stats. They're a nice class for a Mage or Skull to end up in.
- Utility Party Member: Their stats may not look it, but they are. The Sage's native Herd-Hitting Attack is crucial for farming the Shards and Prisoners necessary to increase your character's stats. A Sage with the right Evility-set will single-handedly carry your party through the Post-Game.
- Weapon Specialization:
- World Tree: Powered by one.
Pirate
- The Casanova: A Personality option. Brags constantly about how promiscuous they are.
- Flat Character: While Generic units are their namesake, they at least have some sort of background. Pirates have no flavor to make them stand out. They're literally just most of the site's Pirate Tropes with legs.
- Friendly Pirate: If they're flying the right flag, they'll aid the poor.
- Long-Range Fighter: Their native Evility encourages this. They deal more damage the further they are from the enemy.
- Pirate: Nah, really?
- Pirates Vs Ninjas: Gameplay-wise, they counter everything Ninjas are designed to do.
- Prestige Class: Like the Dark Knight and Sage, Pirates are an end-game class. They outshine just about every ranged class. Give them some of the Gunner's Evilities and you have the best marksman in the game after Asagi.
- Really Gets Around: A Personality option.
- Space Pirates: Given the cosmic nature of Netherworlds, they count as this.
- Sword and Gun: Their two best weapons.
- Talk Like a Pirate: A Personality option.
Majin
- Debut: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
- Ascended Extra: Goes from a gimmicky class in the other games to a species central to the plot of Disgaea 6.
- Battle Aura: Their sprite from Disgaea 2 onwards has one of these.
- Blood Knight: They enjoy a good fight more than anything.
- Guide Dang It!: Unlocking them ether requires having multiple classes at high levels or a New Game Plus. Good luck getting a guide that tells you how to unlock them in any of the games. On top of that the unlock requirements vary form game to game (The multiple class one if for Hour of Darkness and the New Game Plus one is for Disgaea 2 and 3).
- Joke Character: They're little more than paperweights in Disgaea 3 due to horrid Aptitudes, no Weapon Mastery and glaciered EXP Gain. The only benefit to advancing the class' tiers is giving their juicy "Violence" Evility to better characters.
- Master of None: Their state in Disgaea 3 reduces them to a Joke Character that can't even wield anything to start.
- Mighty Glacier: In the older games, they can hit like an anvil and move about as far.
- Nerf: Every game after ''Hour of Darkness' progressively destroys this class more and more to the point they're practically a Joke Character.
- Prestige Class: A straight example in the first game, needing 5 different classes and 200 levels each to unlock. They have S rank weapon mastery in all weapons and 120% aptitudes in all stats.
- One-Man Army: On top of their Evility with the same name (which they share with the Android), the first game also has them get 120% aptitudes in all stats.
- Social Darwinist: They think that the weak have no right to exist.
- Weapon Specialization: All of them...Until Disgaea 3, where it becomes none of them.
- Violence Really Is the Answer: The name of the final Evility, which halves EXP gain but increases stats by 50%? Violence.

- Pink Means Feminine

- Kick Chick: Their basic attack is a kick.

Alraune (Flora Beast)
- Debut: Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
- Always Female: All the creatable alraunes, but subverted with their recruitment scene in Disgaea 4 and Bridget in Disgaea 2, which falls into trap territory. This could refer to the fact that plants have both male and female organs
- Dude Looks Like a Lady: Even the male alraunes look female.
- A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: Alraunes look cute as a ruse to ensnare its prey in vines
- Blow You Away
- Cute Monster Girl
- Kill It with Fire
- Plant Person
- Shrinking Violet
Slumber Cat (Deathsaber, Catsaber)
- Debut: Phantom Brave (Initial) Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice (Disgaea)
- Canon Immigrant: Debuted in Phantom Brave.
- Cuteness Proximity: Weaponized in later titles. They're so cute, certain enemies do less damage to them.
- Fragile Speedster: Their defense is sorely lacking, but their speed isn't.
- Lightning Bruiser: Slumber Cats have moderate ATK that skyrockets if they've moved far enough.
- Ridiculously Cute Critter
- Underground Monkey
- Verbal Tic: Their voice-clips in later games reinforce their cat-ness with "Meow and "Nyan."
Dragon (Evil Dragon)
- Blow You Away: In Disgaea D2.
- Elemental Tiers: In more of a literal sense. Dragons in the first game specialize in either Ice or Fire depending on what Tier they are.note
- Making a Splash: They're Ice creatures in the original game, if you can believe it.
- Our Dragons Are Different
- Playing with Fire: In Disgaeas 2 and 4.
- Mighty Glacier
Serpent (Shark Dragon)
- Blood Knight
- Kill It with Fire
- Making a Splash

- Dark Messiah: Their fire is strong enough to destroy miracles.
- Death by Cameo: One appears in Phantom Brave being killed by Scarlet the Brave.
- Hellfire
- Mighty Glacier: High HP, Attack and Defense. Can barely move.
- Our Dragons Are Different
- Playing with Fire
- Wreathed in Flames
Holy Dragon
- Debut: Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
- Death from Above: Similar to Rangers, Holy Dragons in Disgaea 3 gain a boost to their attack power at high elevations.
- Flight
- Kill It with Fire
- Knight Templar: In contrast to most demons, Holy Dragons are obsessed with altruism and maintaining justice.
- Our Dragons Are Different
- Squishy Wizard
- Token Heroic Orc
Mass Produced Kurtis (Cyborg Kurtis)
- Debut Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories (Character) Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice (Playable Unit)
- A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Played for Drama. Their EDF creators thought they were this, discarding them as failed fancies. This enraged the robots so much they developed a vendetta towards the genuine article.
- Androids Are People, Too
- Exactly What It Says on the Tin
- Formula for the Unformulable: The Kurtis-bots are too dedicated to this to be recognized by the actual Defenders of Earth.
- Defeat Means Friendship: Beating their Extra Stages in 2 DHD and 3 makes them creatable.
- Literal Change of Heart: The MPKs mistakenly believe that extracting Kurtis' heart will give them the "heart of a Defender of Earth." The irony is entirely lost on them.
- Prestige Class: In 2, they have the second-strongest Aptitudes of any Monster sans the Entei.
- My Greatest Failure: The robots are emblematic of the dark pragmatism that consumed Kurtis in the original game.
- Shout-Out: When they're voiced, they all talk like Captain Kirk.
- In 3, their second skill Solidus Punch is a dead-ringer for Android 16's Hell Flash.
- Swapped Roles: In 2, they're constantly hunting Kurtis like persistent hornets. In Disgaea 3, a robotic Kurtis joins Mao's group while being hunted by the real thing.
- We Have Reserves: In 2, destroying the robots sent after him made it harder for Kurtis to kill the next batch thanks to imported battle data.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: They want to become the greatest Defenders of Earth, but they're doing it through the manipulative ruthless methods Kurtis himself discarded in the first game.
Dragon Zombie
- Debut: Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
- Dracolich
- Elite Zombie: Dragon Zombies are the animate corpses of strong dragons.
- Mighty Glacier: Very strong and very tough to kill (especially against physical attacks) but slow with low movement rates.
- Weak to Magic: Dragon Zombies are paper-mache against enemy spells.
Rifle Demon (Baciel)
- The Alcoholic: In games where they're part of the Dark Assembly, they always show up drunk.
- Always Accurate Attack: Their unique ability in 2.
- Blood Knight: Yes.
- Star Power: Most of their specials are Star-element. Later games give them an Evility that increases said Star power.
- Stone Wall: In Disgaea 1 Complete, they replace the Galactic Demon - inheriting their flaws and weaknesses in the process.
- Mighty Glacier: They can't move very far but they hit like a freight train and never miss.
Reaper (Death, Shadow)
- Debut Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (Floating cloak version), Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice (Skull helmet version)
- An Ice Person
- Black Cloak: Of the Ringwraith variety in Hour of Darkness.
- The Grim Reaper: Their design from Disgaea 3 onwards and their role in general.
- Mana Burn: In later titles, they are the bane of mages in combat - with most of their Evilities centered around reducing enemies' SP or weakening their healing.
- One-Hit KO: In D2, their Evilities are squared around delivering these.
- Playing with Fire: Only in Hour of Darkness.
- The Quiet One
- Sinister Scythe
- Squishy Wizard
Nether Noble (Minotaur)
- Aristocrats Are Evil: By Noble Demon standards at least.
- Cast from Money: Their Evilities in Disgaea 5 give them nice perks in exchange for things they do costing money.
- Glass Cannon
- Et Tu, Brute?: If they do say something like this, be very afraid.
- Money Is Not Power: Greedy Disposition (their native Evility in Disgaea 5) is an inversion. The more money the player has, the better of an innate stat-boost anything with it has.
- Unstoppable Rage: If a Nether Noble is betrayed, they'll lash out at anything and anyone.
Ghost
- Crippling Overspecialization: Decent INT and SP. Crap at everything else.
- Kill It with Fire
- Our Ghosts Are Different
- The Goomba: They (along with Orcs) are among the first enemy types you'll encounter in most of the games.
- Zerg Rush: As they're among the weakest demons, this is their only tactic.
Orc (Petite Orc)
- Fantastic Rank System: They operate on one.
- The Goomba: They (along with Ghosts) are among the first enemy types you'll encounter in most of the games.
- Mighty Glacier: A vanilla warrior in every way.
- Zerg Rush: Their main tactic in later titles. Their Evilities even encourage it, giving them stat bonuses when around allies.
Shroom (Eryngi, Eringa, Eringya)
- Debut Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure (Primary) Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice (Series)
- Abandoned Mascot: They represented Nippon Ichi before the Prinny did.
- Anthropomorphic Food
- Canon Immigrant: First appeared in Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure.
- Mighty Glacier: Eryngi aren't the fastest, but they hit fairly hard.
- The Pollyanna: They're said to be optimistic despite their brief lives.
- Spear Counterpart: To Succubi. They weaken female enemies the same way Succubi do to males.
- Verbal Tic: If you don't hear "Gi" come out of them once a sentence, something's wrong.
Faery
- Containment Clothing: Their capes protect their magical essences from being dispersed by the atmosphere.
- Elite Mook: When paired with Ghosts, yes.
- Lightning Bruiser: They have deceptively-high ATK despite their middling Aptitudes.
- Status Infliction Attack: Their second and third Skills inflict Sleep and Poison respectively.
- Volumetric Mouth
Winged
- Blood Knight
- Gameplay and Story Segregation: You'd think those wings would give them Flight movement, but they don't. They can be blocked by objects.
- Master of None: Their stats aren't that impressive. You're using them for their Poison attack or their high MV, if at all.
Zombie
- All the Other Reindeer: While always implied, Disgaea 6 confirms that Zombies are heavily looked down-upon by most of the Netherworld at-large.
- Everything's Deader with Zombies
- Evil Smells Bad: A Zombie's defining trait is their unbearable stench. They even weaponize it.
- Improbable Weapon User: Zombies can attack with their smell.
- Kill It with Fire
- Night of the Living Mooks
- Stone Wall: Zombies have high HP and respectable defense but aren't fascinating otherwise. Later games give them some Life Drain Evilities for variety.
- Zombie Apocalypse: Happens if you make one in Disgaea 4.
Gargoyle
- Our Gargoyles Rock
- Stationary Boss: Their Evilities in 4 and D2 incentivize them being one, giving them various buffs for staying put.
- Stone Wall: Decent DEF and RES but blah in every other way.
Golem
Nosferatu
- Classical Movie Vampire
- Daywalking Vampire
- Magic Knight: Their stats grant them great Attack and Intelligence.
- One-Shot Character: Subverted. The class has been relegated solely to the first game and its various ports, but no numbered entry after.

- Social Climber: A whole race of them.
Sea Angel

- Combat Tentacles
- Making a Splash
- Sailor Fuku: Always seen wearing one.
- Shrinking Violet
Dark Knight (Living Armor)
- Animated Armor
- Honor Before Reason
- Kill It with Ice
- Knight in Shining Armor
- Mighty Glacier
- Weapon Specialization: Though being a monster class, they can't learn skills associated with their weapon.
Sludge
- Armored But Frail: Very resistant to Physical attacks, but even a papercut's worth of Magic dissolves them. In Disgaea 5, they have -75% in every element.
- Blob Monster
- Crippling Overspecialization: Excellent physical tanks but that's all they have going for them.
Mothman
- Cowardly Lion: Even at their strongest, Mothmen are flittery.
- Flight
- Fragile Speedster: Have high MV and SPD. They're horrible in every other regard.
- Master Poisoner: Later titles turn them into Poison-spreaders. Comes to a head in Disgaea 5 where an Overlord you can recruit could vie for Trope Namer.
- Moth Menace
- Utility Party Member: In earlier titles, Mothmen take the role of "Item World Speedrunner" with their immense MV.
Mystic Beast (Cu Sith)
- All Animals Are Dogs: A Personality option in later games. Bonus points for them being Wolves, which are rather close to dogs.
- Blow You Away: Most of their specials are Wind-based and in 2 they're immune to any form of Wind damage.
- Lightning Bruiser: Mystic Beasts are known for two things: Their SPD and their ATK.
- Parents as People: Mystic Beasts are very protective of their children, though they also send said kids into battle to train them.
Galactic Demon
- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: These guys've been absent from every game since.
- Metal Slime: Subverted. While they aren't hard to find, they offer the most Experience out of any enemy in the game and are very hard to pop even for strong characters.
- Shock and Awe: They attack with electricity.
- Stone Wall: Their DEF and RES makes them hard to crush, but their low ATK and MV make them enticing targets anyway.
- The Immune: Not only are they insanely durable, their Status ailment resistances are maxed out from the start. Good luck pegging them with anything.
Lantern
- Beneficial Disease: Their final Evility in D2 reverse the effects of Ailments cast on them. (Poison becomes Regenerating Health, ETC.)
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: They're usually relaxed and cheerful, but they're as ruthless as any other demon.
- Jack of All Stats: Lanterns aren't very exciting, stat-wise.
- Physical Attribute Swap: In D2, their Evilities revolve around swapping their (and their enemies) resistances.
- Plant Person
- Poisonous Person: In D2, their native Evility gives them a 50% chance to give enemies ailments when they attack.
Treant
- Face Framed in Shadow
- Poisonous Person: Their initial Skill deals Poison as well as Paralysis.
- Status Infliction Attack: Their first skill.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: All but a Monster version of the Archer.

Wood Golem
- Gentle Giant: Usually.
- Mighty Glacier: Can't move far but will crush anything they are in reach of.
- Plant Person
- Regenerating Health: In most games they heal HP at the end of their turn. This makes them resistant (and with enough Lover Specialists Immune) to Poison.
- The Big Guy
Aqua Demon
- Eyeless Face
- Herd-Hitting Attack: Their Evilities in later games increase the strength of these.
- Kill It with Ice: Most of their Specials are Ice-oriented and they're immune to Ice attacks.
- Mighty Glacier: Essentially a "mage tank" with moderate defenses and INT.
- Shock and Awe: They attack with their body electricity.
Bear

- Belly Mouth
- Big Eater
- Critical Status Buff: Most of their Evilities revolve around effects that happen when they're hit.
- Gentle Giant: Contrary to their violent appearance, they're this.
- Mighty Glacier: They only have middling defenses but immense HP.
- Supreme Chef: Their species is known for them.
Imp
- Beneficial Disease: Like Lanterns before them, an Imp's Evilities allow it to turn status ailments into benefits.
- Flight
- Gameplay and Story Segregation: Despite their reputation putting even Thieves to shame, they won't have a Thief's stealing bonus unless it's given to them.
- Jack of All Stats: Their Aptitudes and stats allow them to do basically anything.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: They're essentially the Lanterns from Disgaea 1 with Flight movement.
- In Disgaea 1 Complete, they visually replace the Winged class.
- The Trickster
Fairy
- Our Fairies Are Different
- Flight
- Parent-Child Team: Fairies fight in conjunction with their fathers.
- Squishy Wizard
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Essentially the Monster answer to the Witch. Their Evilities even focus on SP restoration, just like said class.
- Tsundere: A Personality option.
Chimera
- Armored But Frail: Similar to Aqua Demons from older titles, Chimera are mage-tanks with decent INT, DEF and RES. Shame about their HP, though.
- Kung-Fu Wizard: Their stats favor spellcasting, but their ATK isn't terrible.
- Omnicidal Maniac: Implied. Despite their loss of power, they still want to destroy everything.
- Noodle Incident: Their species is responsible for putting the Netherworlds into some sort of unexplained curse.
Generic Classes
- Adorably Precocious Child: Skulls from Disgaea 2 onwards.
- All Monks Know Kung-Fu: Martial Artists.

- Battle of the Sexes: Battle? Try war! The female Archers revolted against the male Rangers and had a war that spanned over multiple Netherworlds, eventually requiring Overlords to stop the feud.
- Bizarre Sexual Dimorphism: The result of the aforementioned Battle of the Sexes. Thought we don't know much about the Rangers, we do know that the baby Archers are born from a tree.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Golems and Archers. The former will kill you if you piss it off and Archers are still powerful huntresses that can snipe you with an arrow.
- The Beastmaster: Beastmasters
- Berserk Button: Male Healers really hate being mistaken for girls in Disgaea D2 (where their latest redesign pushes them into Dude Looks Like a Lady territory)
- Black Cloak: Reapers, of the Ringwraith variety in Hour of Darkness
- Blob Monster: Sludges
- Blood Knight: The more powerful monsters like Serpents and Rifle Demons love fighting. Majins also live for combat and despise the weak.

- Cat Girl: Thieves. Literal Classy Cat Burglars, perhaps? There are also the monster Nekomata.
- Chained by Fashion: Both Healer classes, but only really explained for the male, who believe that healing those wounded in battle is a sin. Likewise, Sinners, a Disgaea 2 class, who are dangerous convicts unleashed by the senate as necessary.
- Combat Tentacles: Sea Angels
- Cool Old Guy: Geomancers by appearance and attitude, but they're actually significantly younger. The crystals they put inside themselves cause rapid aging until they all look old.

- Dracolich: Dragon Zombies are undead dragons. They're stronger than normal dragons, but less intelligent.
- Dude Looks Like a Lady
- In Disgaea D2 Male Healers look and sound like girls.
- Alraune seem to be a One-Gender Race, but there are males. They just happen to look exactly the same.

- Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: The magic knight's evilities are built around exploiting the enemy's weakness.
- Et Tu, Brute?: If a Nether Noble say something like this, be very afraid.

- Expy
- The Male Healers's Disgaea 3 incarnation is essentially a less buff Sinner.
- Put the Merchants of Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom in a Gunner suit and you get a Gunslinger.

- Flight: Certain classes like the Masked Hero, Mothman or Celestial Host can fly, meaning they can pass through enemy tiles.
- Fragile Speedster
- Valkyrie evilities focus on movement in contrast to the bulkier warriors.
- The Masked Hero has an evility that makes them a One-Hit-Point Wonder in exchange for moving five extra panels.
- Ninjas and especially Kunoichi have poor defenses, but great speed stats that make them hard to hit in the first place.
- Catsabers have evilities that increase their abilities based on their movement. They also hit surprisingly hard.

- Hospital Hottie: The Medic
- Idol Singer: Implied with Cheerleaders.

- Girlish Pigtails: Their hairstyle in Disgaea 2.

- Kill It with Ice: Ice is the third primary skill and is a common weapon for classes like the Mages.
- Knight in Shining Armor:
- The Heavy and Armor Knights are, like the name suggests, trained to be knights.
- The Living Armors are firm believers of chivalry.
- Lethal Joke Character: In Disgaea 3 and 4 the Masked Hero has the Trick Move evility which increases evasion by 10% per panel moved, and a very high movement stat to go along with it. While Disgaea D2 nerfed the evility, his high movement range and Flight is still useful for item grinding.
- Lightning Bruiser: Berserkers. Majin fit this in the first game, but then their movement declined to abysmal levels.
- Literal Genie: Golems seem to evoke genies a lot in their specials.
- Mad Scientist
- One of the Male Healer's personality choices during Character Creation

- The Medic: The Healer and Medic classes from various games.

- Only in It for the Money: Rangers.
- Our Angels Are Different: Apart from the fallen angel classes (Female Healers and Succubi), there are also Celestial Hosts and Angels to go with them. They're strong classes, but can be relatively tricky to unlock.
- Our Dragons Are Different: Dragons are a powerful race that can be summoned to help, though they won't work for people weaker than they are. However, there are also Undead Dragons as well as Serpents and Great Wyrms, which are sharklike and flaming dragons respectively. On the other hand, there are also the respectable and honorable Holy Dragons.
- Our Gargoyles Rock: Gargoyles.
- Our Ghosts Are Different: Ghosts are implied to be human souls that failed to become prinnies and are an anomaly in the netherworld.

- Petite Pride: Archers take pride in being flat.

- Powered Armor: The Battle Suit class in Disgaea 4 uses special tech to match up to the power of demons.

- Shadow Archetype: Rangers, in contrast the the kinder Archers, the rangers are cold mercenaries.
- Shout-Out: The Beastemasters' hairstyle and default colors bring to mind Knuckles.

- Sea Angels are shy and only come out of the water to feed.
- Sinister Scythe: Reapers
- Social Darwinist: Majins think the weak have no right to exist.
- Squishy Wizard: Skulls and Mages have great magic aptitude and range, but very poor defenses and HP. Their movement is also low, making it hard to escape danger. The Healer classes are also fairly squishy, though they tend to be resilient to magical attacks at least. A few of the monster classes are also casting based and tend to suffer defensively for it, though not as much as the mages.
- Status Effects:
- Sorcerors have all the status ailment spells in the series except maybe Charm.
- Thieves, Ninja and Kunoichi can also inflict status ailments in some games by "stealing health" or similar things.
- Star Power: Geomancers and Onmyo Monks focus on star magic, which is essentially Non-Elemental magic.

- The Stoic: In Disgaea Celestial Hosts were nearly emotionless in their stoicism, though later games reduced this.
- Stone Wall
- In contrast to Valkyries, Warrior evilites revolve around defense.
- Heavy and Armor knights are very bulky and use defensive weapons like spears, but have mediocre stats otherwise and low movement.
- Bouncers, a Disgaea 4 class, are even more defensively oriented than the two Knight classes that were already built like tanks.
- Gargoyles as well. Granted since they were intended to be guardians since ancient times, that was a given.
- Stripperiffic: Beastmasters show a lot of skin.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute
- Onmyo Monks for Geomancers.
- The Professor, and later the Sea Angel fulfills the same role as the Cheerleader with support magic to boosts stats, throwing range and movement.
- Sinners to the Martial Artists. It is probably telling that the redesigned Martial Artist in Disgaea 3 bears slight resemblance to the Sinner.
- Thieves' Guild: The biggest trade industry in the netherworld
- Threatening Shark: Serpents are aggressive and predatory shark dragons.
- Token Human: Battle Suits in Disgaea 4, until the Medic class arrived. The original Disgaea also had the EDF Soldiers, which were surprisingly powerful units with a special fondness for guns.
- Too Many Belts: Valkyries
- Training from Hell: Martial Artists inflict very intense training on themselves.
- Troll: Geomancers are always thinking of ways to make other people's lives miserable. This amuses them.
- 24-Hour Armor: The Heavy and Armor Knight classes.

- Undying Loyalty
- Generally Beastmasters do not trust people, but when they do find somebody that they trust, they will follow them forever.
- Ninjas used to be very shady individuals, but they reformed and became very devoted to their master. Of course, you won't know for sure who their true master actually is.
- Both Samurai classes have a similar thing going on.
- The Unintelligible: In Disgaea Hour Of Darkness, Skulls made weird guttural noises that apparently indicate they're concentrating too hard to speak normally while fighting.
- Unstoppable Rage: If Nether Nobles are betrayed, they become tyrannical and kill the traitors and anyone else involved.
- Violence Really Is the Answer: The name of the final Majin evility, which halves EXP gain but increases stats by 50%? Violence
- Walking Shirtless Scene: Starting with Disgaea 2, Warriors lack shirts.
- War God: Warriors follow the deity Grandell, who they must make a pact with to become warriors. Oddly enough, Grandell becomes the name of the highest tier warriors in Disgaea D2, who are likewise referred to as gods of war.
- Weapon Specialization: Each class tends to have one or two weapons that they specialize in, though a few like Majins are good with almost anything.
- Cool Sword: Valkyries, Berserkers, Samurai and Magic Knights. There's also the Living Armor, but they don't learn sword skills (being monsters).
- Good Old Fisticuffs: Martial Artists and Fight Mistresses favor fist weapons. Sinners can't use anything else decently at all.
- The Straight and Arrow Path: Archers and Rangers.
- Wizarding School: Mages are naturally gifted at magic, but Skulls have to study it at special schools, which makes them much more serious. Female Healers also attend their own school for healing.
- A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: Alraunes look cute as a ruse to ensnare its prey in vines
- The World Tree: The tree in the center of the village and where the young archers are born.
- Wreathed in Flames: Great Wyrms and their Disgaea 3 counterparts, Fire Demons
- Younger Than They Look: Geomancers age faster than other demons thanks to their abilities.
- Zerg Rush: Ghosts. It's their only option for battle since they are as weak as prinnies.
- Zombie Apocalypse: Happens if you create a Zombie in Disgaea 4.
