We are in an Anime is a Play-By-Post Game started on October 29th, 2019 by sabrina_diamond on the TV Tropes Forum. As an Affectionate Parody of most anime, the basic premise of the story is a surrealistic Slice of Life series focused around the students of Neo-Daten University, and the unusual secrets they slowly begin to discover behind it.
This series provides examples of...
- Absurdly Powerful Student Council: Forms most of the main plot's first Story Arc.
- Academy of Adventure: Neo-Daten University, of course.
- Affectionate Parody: Each of the main students is this of a stereotypical anime character archetype, with many of their titles listed in the initial post.
- Steph is a parody of a Tsundere.
- Chris is a parody of a Bishounen.
- Shiki is a parody of an Isekai Protagonist.
- Izuru is a parody of a Chuunibyou.
- Yumeko is a parody of an Occult Detective.
- Hiroji is a parody of an Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy.
- And Kosugi is a parody of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl.
- Americasia: Neo-Daten is a town set in a combination of Japan and Australia; Japaustralia. Many places within Japaustralia are parodies and combinations of existing locations in the Real Life version of Japan and Australia, such as...
- Sydeko, a mixture of Sydney and Tokyo.
- Needlepoint Tower, a parody of Sydney's Centrepoint Tower.
- Coastal Bridge, a parody of the famous Harbour Bridge which linked both central coasts together.
- Solar Park, a local parody of Luna Park.
- Melbotone, a mixture of Melbourne and Kyoto
- Anthropomorphized Anatomy: Steph's cells in episode 5.
- Black Bug Room: The gang gets trapped in their respective rooms while trapped inside of the Lotus-Eater Machine.
- Brain with a Manual Control: Steph's entire brain is (metaphorically) shown this way in episode 5...
- Cold Open: Episode two begins this way, with Goethe locking herself inside a wooden shed on the school campus grounds.
- Creepy Crows: Part of Goethe's animal motif, since she's a tengu.
- Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: As Yumeko walks outside, he hums the theme song in episode 3.
- Dark Magical Girl: This is why the Student Council is monitoring for any supernatural occurences on the campus.
- Dream Within a Dream: Yumeko falls asleep on a pole and dreams about being late to school. He wakes up on the same pole, gives up and goes home.
- Edutainment Show: This is also a main factor of this roleplay, since it aims to educate others.
- Eldritch Location: Inside Steph's body.
- Everything Talks: As a side-effect of everything in the universe gaining a soul-room.
- Exposition Fairy: Khronica Cyrus would be considered this when in charge of the Student Concil.
- Elaborate University High: Neo-Daten University had been described as Word of God to be a "fairly high-tech futuristic school with flying cars and sleek glass-lined buildings".
- "Fantastic Voyage" Plot: Episode 5's main plot.
- Fantasy Kitchen Sink: This world has a bit of everything. Yokai, vampires, monsters, Magical Girl's, dragons, the undead...
- Good Morning, Crono: A variant happens when Steph wakes up for school.
- Gut Feeling: After Steph got Buried Alive, Yuu knew that Steph was okay. Low and behold, she's doing quite well for herself despite living one of her fears.
- Hammerspace: Hammerspace is a physical dimension that everyone has. They act much like a personal Pocket Dimension; tailored to the whims of their holder that's Bigger on the Inside... It can also be infinite in extra-dimensional size!
- Heartbeat Soundtrack: This is a constant sound in Steph's soul-room.
- Lotus-Eater Machine: The main characters get trapped in one for the plot of Episode 4.
- MacGuffin Location: Neo-Daten University appears to be one, as it is a hot-spot for supernatural activity and Isekai'd students.
- Magical Girl: The opposite of Nightmares and Dark Magical Girls. When positive emotions are utilized, the student becomes a Magical Girl with the title Celestial, which is the highest tier of magic there is. Fortunately for the Absurdly Powerful Student Council, the Celestials are much rarer than Nightmares.
- Magic Knight: The male equivalent to becoming Magical Girl's.
- Monster of the Week: The main plot focuses on this format, with new Nightmares presumably appearing every episode.
- Meat Moss: This is a staple of Steph's soul-room, as it covers her entire soul-room.
- Mental World: Variants of this concept are seen when Cyrus of the Student Council explains everything.
- The main type of Mental World that has been explored is the "Soul Room". The Soul Room can be thought of as a personal Mental World. Everyone and everything has a Soul Room, including objects such as trees and desks. Although it has been implied that objects only gain Soul Rooms after 100 years of existing. The details and objects inside ones Soul Room represents the subconscious of the host and experiences that one has accumulated over time.
- Mysterious Protector: Goethe the Red Tengu.
- The Power of Love: Is, of course, the most powerful force in the universe.
- Running Gag: Yumeko offering people Sprite Cranberry's
- Shout-Out: Neo-Daten University. The "Neo" part being a reference to the Neon Genesis Junior High Students, and also to the anime of the same name.
- Slice of Life: This is the main genre of this roleplay.
- School Clubs Are Serious Business: Clubs are treated as such. There's a Demolition Club, for example.
- Swallowed Whole: The fate of Olivia, for now at least...
- The Cameo: Many characters appear in Steph's soul-room from her previous stories.
- Title Sequence: Performed in the first episode; the song is Chocolate Disco - Perfume.
- Toon Physics: Is part of this world too.
- Tragic Monster: Nightmares, which are formed from student's primary negative emotions at the time.
- Urban Fantasy: This roleplay is set in "present day" according to Word of God.
- Whole Episode Flashback: Episode 6
- Year Inside, Hour Outside: Steph's hammerspace works in this manner, especially in episode 5.
