"The beautiful gardens of Denev are steeped in history and wonder, having been maintained for the past 500 years at this very spot. The gardens have expanded over the years to include plant types from around the world, each kept in their own little environments. Visit today, and see if you can't grow yourself as well!"
— The opening paragraph of the leaflet.

Garden Ronpa is a Danganronpa–style RP run off Tumblr, Skype, and MSPARP. With 18 players and as many characters, the plot follows the same format as the original Dangan Ronpa, though it takes place in a separate universe. Students from Hope's Peak Academy are trapped in a strange green area, covered by a dome called a BIOME, and cannot remember how they ended up there. Within a few days, it becomes apparent, with the appearance of Monopython, the Garden's guardian and the overseer of their mutual killing game. He tells them that the only way to leave the Garden alive is to murder a classmate, and get away with it at a school trial. Naturally, it doesn't take long for this to happen.

The game has now concluded at Chapter Six, its sequel Garden Ronpa 2 concluded, and the third in the series, Garden Ronpa v3, currently ongoing.

This game provides examples of:

  • Awesome, but Impractical: The chainsaw that was found in chapter 1 is too heavy to lift for the majority of the cast, much less control when turned on. This means that, even if someone were to use it for a murder weapon, it would become quickly obvious who it was.
  • Anyone Can Die: On a meta level, any player can volunteer his character to kill or be killed. On a purely in-game level, it really is a free-for-all of murder.
  • Any Last Words?: The murderers are usually given a small amount of time to explain themselves before being dragged off to their Public Execution.
  • Break the Cutie: Damn near everyone by this point.
  • Big Eater: Alice can put away frankly ridiculous amounts of ice cream.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Shinta, like woah.
    • Also Masaru on occasion.
  • Cute and Psycho: Yuurei, good lord. To a lesser extent, Shizune, though really she's just paranoid.
  • Deadly Game: The very premise.
  • Death Seeker: Both Yuurei and Yuuki, apparently. And they fully plan for everyone else to die too. Shichio as of Chapter 3.
  • Downer Ending: The Bad End of chapter 2, when the students voted wrong, and all exploded. Don't worry, they got better.
  • Dwindling Party: What started as 18 students is quickly reducing down as the game wears on...
  • Dying Alone: Shizune, chapter 2's victim. Poor thing.
  • Evil Laugh: Sesesesesesese!!
  • Eyepatch of Power: Nakamura Shichiro sports one.
  • Feather Boa Constrictor: Minipython, Monopython's smaller, more transportable mode, likes to get purchase on a person's shoulders or even their neck while they talk to him. He mostly does it because it freaks a lot of them out. Does not work on Yuurei.
  • Flaw Exploitation: The purpose of the motives is to find these flaws in the students and use them to push them into desperation or despair.
  • Ghost City: Well, Ghost Garden. Where there should be staff and gardeners and tourists there is only empty space and foliage. And with the number of students dwindling, it only feels more empty.
  • Jerkass: Mikazuki Yuuki, though sometimes he gets better.
  • Plucky Girl: Several of the female cast members, but particularly Rei.
  • Pummeling the Corpse: Hibiku.
    • And later, Yuuki and Yuurei. Mostly Yuuki.
  • Smug Snake: Literal example with Monopython.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Hibiku, in chapter 1's trial, actually answers when Rei uses an ancient trick.
    Rei: "Murdererofkidokunsayswhat—"
    Hibiku: "Huh?"
    • And the trial continued regardless.
  • Teen Genius: Everyone, in their own fields. Part of the requirement to get into Hope's Peak is standing out amongst your peers, while being merely High School aged.
  • There's No Kill like Overkill: Kaneko Hibiku could probably have stopped hitting Kido after the first bonk on the head. But he didn't.
  • Victim of the Week: Well, of the Fortnight, anyway.
