Film — Animation

  • In All Dogs Go to Heaven, Charlie reads from War and Peace to Anne-Marie, only he pretends he's reading about Robin Hood.
  • The Peanuts Movie has a subplot loosely based on Happy New Year, Charlie Brown (see below). Charlie Brown and the Little Red-Haired Girl are paired together for a book report, but since she's absent, he has to do it alone. He decides to impress her by reading War in Peace, after Marcie tells him it's considered the most difficult book to read. He actually succeeds, only for the finished report to get destroyed.

  • Argylle: When Aiden Wilde urges Elly Conway to write the next chapter to her novel, he says it does not have to be long like War And Peace.
  • The Hudsucker Proxy: As production of Norville's invention is underway, the guys at Marketing are trying to figure out what to call it. Outside, the secretary is reading War and Peace; by the time they come up with the perfect namenote , the secretary has moved on to Anna Karenina.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990): Donatello has read the book and correctly guesses it as the answer in a game of Trivia.

Literature

  • In Shtum, books including War and Peace are arranged around Ben on the bed. None are open further than page 20.
  • The Executioner. This line from "Boston Blitz".
    The scene inside those walls was straight out of War and Peace—with all the peace removed.
  • Princesses of the Pizza Parlor: The Most Boringest Gnome in the World mentions it as a measure of book length.

Live-Action TV

  • In The Love Boat episode "Crew Confessions," Doc criticizes the book Isaac's writing, and he says, "Would you ask Tolstoy to change War and Peace?"
  • Get Smart. A villain shoots at Maxwell Smart and he holds up a book to stop the bullet. The villain asks how Smart knew that would save him, and Smart replies, "Nobody gets through War and Peace!"

Newspaper Comics

  • Peanuts: Snoopy decides to read Tolstoy's novel - one word a day. This causes a rift between him and Woodstock when Woodstock points out how idiotic that is.
