Comic Strips

  • A week-long arc in FoxTrot saw Peter pick up a book-on-CD version of the tale to listen to while he slept in the hopes of subconsciously absorbing it for a test the next day. Consequently, his dreams that night were all centered on the story; he was Odysseus, Jason was one of his crewmen (who briefly took over the dream by replacing the cyclopses with X-Men characters), Andy resided on the island of lotus eaters (now "tofu eaters"), Roger was a god of leaf blowers, Paige was a Boy Band medley-singing siren, and Jason’s pet iguana was Penelope (which Squicked Peter out enough to wake him up).

Literature

  • The Dresden Files: When Harry learns in Skin Game that their target is to break into Hades' vault he snidely alludes to The Aeneid, Herakles and The Odyssey when saying only about three guys had managed to walk in and out of Hades alive.
  • Haugtussa: Gislaug is not the first literary figure to walk through heaven and hell. Of course, Odysseus, Aeneas and Dante have all done the journey before her, but she is quite possibly the first girl to make the trip.
  • In There's More Than One Way Home, Anna mentally plugs her ears against other people's suspicious whispers like Odysseus plugging his ears against the sirens.
  • David Gemmell's Troy Saga is a re-imagining of The Trojan Cycle that features Odysseus as one of its main characters with various allusions and Mythology Gags to his encounters from the poem brought up over the course of the series.
  • Lost Voices: In The Twice Lost, the government's secret program to exterminate the mermaids is called Operation Odysseus.
  • Ulysses: James Joyce structured his look at turn-of-the-century Dubliners in homage to it.
  • Siren Novels: In Undercurrent, Paige looks for books about sirens in the Bates Library, but she only finds two, including The Odyssey, which she calls a total yawn.
  • Transpecial: Ever since she read The Odyssey, Suza imagines each planet as an island, each one inhabited by strange and wonderful beings.

Live-Action TV

  • Arrow. The episode "The Odyssey" involves Oliver Queen and Slade Wilson attempting to escape off the island and return home (which takes Oliver only half the time that Odysseus did, but he has modern transport available). During the episode, the mercenaries hunting them use phrases from The Odyssey as a Trust Password.
  • Boy Meets World: Mr. Turner's first assignment for Cory's class in "Back 2 School" is to start reading the story. He tries to pique the kids' interest by saying to also read an X-Men comic so as to do a compare and contrast discussion the next day.
  • Hercules: The Legendary Journeys: "Reign Of Terror" centers around King Augeas thinking he's Zeus and being used by Hera in an attempt to kill Hercules. During the climax, Augeas receives a nasty shock; he's feeing much calmer, but he now thinks he's Ulysses.
Augeas: I've been thinking about having a little cruise around the Mediterranean.
  • Star Trek: Voyager. In "Favorite Son", Harry Kim specifically compares the beautiful alien women who tried to harvest his DNA to the Sirens from The Odyssey. Given that the entire series is based around The Homeward Journey, this tale is an obligatory reference; Captain Janeway appears to have a bust of Odysseus in her Ready Room.

Western Animation

  • Arthur has "D.W. Tale Spins", where D.W. tells her own abridged recreation of The Odyssey. She plays Odysseus, Buster is the cyclops, Muffy is Scylla, Francine is Poseidon, and Arthur is Charybdis.
