The boombox scene has become very well-known, with parodies from the following works:

Comic Strips
  • In the November 20, 2019, Mary Worth, having drunkenly ruined his date with Estelle, Wilbur stands outside her window with a boombox playing "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes.

Films — Live-Action

  • A shoutout can be found in Deadpool 2, when Deadpool tries to make up with Colossus and does the stereo-under-your-window thing.
  • Easy A: In the film's climax, when Todd comes for Olive, he holds up speakers just as Lloyd held up the boombox.

Live-Action TV

  • The epilogue of Arrested Development's episode "Whistler's Mother" parodies the scene when George's Sr.'s brother is holding up his boombox in front of Lucille's window to get her attention.
  • Elementary: In one episode Sherlock Holmes wakes Joan Watson up by holding up a stereo playing a piece of music connected to their current case at top volume. When Joan comments that it's supposed to be playing Peter Gabriel, Holmes is confused because he hasn't seen the movie and just did it as a coincidence.
  • How I Met Your Mother: While discussing the difference between a Grand Romantic Gesture and being a Stalker with a Crush the gang cite the boombox scene as an example of a gesture that could have easily gone wrong if the target wasn't interested.
  • In the credits scene of a Modern Family episode, Dylan tries to win Haley back holding up his phone like the boombox in Say Anything. Phil mentions the movie to Dylan, which leads to a Who's on First? moment between the two.
  • In the That's So Raven episode "Blue in the Face", Devon pulls a boombox over his head to bring his girlfriend, Raven, the concert that she was forbidden to attend due to poor grades and a chemical explosion in her school's science lab.

Music

  • The video for "I Don't Wanna Be an Asshole Anymore" by The Menzingers features a Hockey Mask And Chain Saw-type serial killer holding a boombox over his head in an attempt to make up with his lady outside her house.
  • The Ninja Sex Party video for "Three Minutes of Ecstasy" Danny and Brian get a woman's attention by throwing roses through her window and standing outside with a boombox. Danny then manages to throw himself through her window, much to her displeasure, so they can have their "three minutes of ecstasy".

Webcomics

  • The Homestuck music "How Do I Live (D8 Night Version)" has a track art showing John holding a stereo over his head.

Western Animation

  • The Amazing World of Gumball: Gumball attempts to get Rob to hate him again by serenading him with a boombox playing a song that Rob hates, parodying the film.
  • Gravity Falls: In "Gideon Rises," Robbie runs up to Wendy with a boombox playing instrumental rock music over his head.
Robbie: Take me back, Wendy! My arms are too skinny to keep holding this boombox forever!
  • Family Guy:
    • In "Stewie Kills Lois", Herbert tries to get Chris' attention by holding up a phonograph and playing a record with 1940s music.
    • In "Once Bitten", Neil stands under Chris' window holding an old boom box up to apologize for sacrificing their friendship for a fling with Meg. However, Neil ends up playing the radio news because he doesn't own any cassettes. He then asks if he can put the boom box down because the D batteries make it so heavy.
    • In "80's Guy", Chris asks Peter for advice in getting a girl to notice him, so he invites him to watch his 1980s movie collection for inspiration. Chris decides to emulate the boombox scene from this movie, but he gets charged with felony stalking.
  • Regular Show: Parodied in "Video Game Wizards". Early in the episode, Rigby has Mordecai play his mixtape, which is just Rigby singing about how Mordecai should've chosen him to partake in the gaming tournament instead of Skips. Later, Rigby stands in the parking lot outside of Mordecai and Skips' motel room, blasting his mixtape using a boombox that he's holding over his head, with Mordecai unable to sleep because of it.
  • The Simpsons:
    • In "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Marge", Otto holds up a boombox and plays a song for his girlfriend at a drive-in.
    • There is an episode titled "Pray Anything".
  • South Park: In "Raisins", Stan is trying to get Wendy back, and one of Wendy's friends suggests he stand outside her window and play a Peter Gabriel song as a romantic gesture. But Stan, rather than choosing "In Your Eyes", chooses the decidedly unromantic "Shock the Monkey".
