Literature

  • Hank from The Half-Life of Planets tells Liane, "I'm like John Oates. I'll always be there, even if nobody really understands what I do." When Liane asks what he means, he explains that in Hall and Oates, Daryl Hall writes and sings all the songs and G.E. Smith handled most of the lead guitar duties, so no one knows exactly what Oates does, but when Hall put out solo albums without him, nobody bought them.

Live-Action Television

  • Henry Danger: In "Text, Lies & Video", while Charlotte is deleting the video of Henry and Ray transforming from the Cloud and Piper screams Henry's name, signaling her imminent entry, Ray waxes a line from "Maneater": "Whoa... here she comes! Watch out boy, she'll chew you up!"
  • The Goldbergs:
    • In "Oates & Oates", Barry tries to impress Ren, who is running a charity talent show, by claiming that he can get Hall & Oates to perform. He and Adam then try to pass themselves as Hall and Oates, but since Barry can't tell which is Hall and which is Oates, both end up dressed as Oates. John Oates cameos as a janitor who claims to have a band.
    • In "Mr. Knifey-Hands", Geoff wants Erica and him to dress as a package of Halls cough drops and a can of Quaker Oats, so they can go as Hall & Oates.
  • Veronica Mars: In the first season episode "Kanes and Abel's", when Veronica is trying to find out who hired rival private eye Vinnie Van Lowe to harass her client (an older classmate), she gives Vinnie a pen that has a bug in it, and not only does Vinnie figure out it's a bug (though it's partly to cover another bug Veronica gave Vinnie's secretary/mother), he starts singing "Private Eyes" to Veronica before tossing the pen out the window of his office.
  • It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Charlie and Mac list several famous musical duos they could model their band after, with Charlie claiming he's "Holland Oates" and Mac is Peter Gabriel.

Music

  • Triple-Q: "Out of Touch! Sailor Uniform" mashes up "Out of Touch" with "Motteke! Sailor Fuku!", referencing a popular meme that syncs the Lucky Star opening up with the Hall & Oates song.

Western Animation

  • The Simpsons: In "Panic in the Streets of Springfield", Principal Skinner says that Slapify (a parody of Spotify) is getting more kids hooked on music from the past, and Martin is shown singing "Maneater" to himself.
