Blackjack, the Card Game, has been Referenced by...

Anime & Manga

  • Eyeshield 21: It's implied that Hiruma has eidetic memory. It's particularly noticeable when he's playing blackjack in a casino, it looks like he memorized every single card that was taken from the deck and that's how he's winning that way.

Films — Live-Action

  • 21: Kevin Spacey is a math professor who has his brightest students count cards at a casino.
  • Looney Tunes: Back in Action: At Yosemite Sam's casino, D.J. needs a special card that got mixed up with the deck used by the blackjack dealer (played by Foghorn Leghorn) and has to play to get it back. Sam, who is also after the same card, also plays. D.J. wins the game and gets the card, while an impatient Sam keeps insisting to Foghorn "Hit me, frazznabit!" and gets hit with a two-by-four.
  • Rain Man: Charlie (Tom Cruise) exploits his savant brother Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) to win several hands of blackjack at a casino.

Live-Action TV

  • Monk: In "Mr. Monk Goes to Vegas", Lt. Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford) tries to play blackjack according to a book but he's terrible at it, losing about $30,000. Monk (Tony Shalhoub) is effortlessly able to "count" the cards, because he actually remembers them. After losing a hand or two, he wins several hands and gets close to recovering what Disher lost, while at the same time explaining how the casino owner murdered his wife. As he gives his summation, he simultaneously makes good decisions regarding stands and hits, and splits a pair of eights at one point. However, the casino owner has Monk thrown out for allegedly cheating.
  • The Pretender: In 'Curious Jarod', the protagonist (Michael T. Weiss) comes under suspicion for card counting at the Marquee Casino.
  • Star Trek:
    • Star Trek: The Next Generation: In "The Royale", Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) reads off what he knows about blackjack: "Also known as twenty-one, a number which defines the object of the game. Picture cards are worth ten, aces one or eleven, all other cards face value." But he's interrupted before he can say much more about it.
    • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: In "Badda-Bing Badda-Bang", Colonel Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) is playing blackjack in a holographic casino, but she's not having much luck. She has a queen and a six showing, then gets an eight. She knows she's gone bust. But then Frank Chalmers, a holographic character who currently owns the casino, shows up. Smitten with Kira, Frankie tells the dealer to take back the eight and give the lady another card. Frankie repeats this until the dealer finally gives Kira a five.

Video Games

  • Red Dead Redemption and its sequel both offer blackjack as one of the gambling minigames. Note that both titles use a single-deck variant where the deck is shuffled after every hand, which renders counting completely useless.

Western Animation

  • Family Guy: Peter keeps telling the blackjack dealer "hit me" even though it's clear he's going to go bust and keeps saying "hit me" after he's gone bust.
  • Looney Tunes: In "Bonanza Bunny", Bugs Bunny plays a game of blackjack with Blacque Jacque Shellaque for Bugs' bag of gold rocks. Jacque as the dealer draws two tens, then as he deals Bugs his cards, Bugs stops him after one card. Jacque thinks he can win easily, but Bugs' card happens to be, impossible as it seems, the 21 of hearts.
  • The Simpsons: When Mr. Burns opens a casino in the episode "$pringfield", Homer becomes a blackjack dealer. He's bad at it, he lets all the players win. At least there's no risk of a nuclear meltdown like there is his with his usual job at Mr. Burns's power plant.
