Tropes:

  • Beyond the Impossible: Lily manages to rearrange the song she was set to perform for the finals into a scat-jazz number, retrofit her outfit into a new costume, and improvise a full dance routine, all within the minutes it took Light to finish his performance of the same song.
  • Bland-Name Product: "Japanese Got Performance".
  • Call-Back: Lily looks to her father for inspiration when entering the talent show, performing one of their favorite songs for the final showcase.
  • Hidden Depths: Lily has an appreciation for Rakugo performances.
  • Hostile Show Takeover: A non-Malicious version. Lily takes control of the morning briefing without telling Kotaro, giving the man A Taste of Their Own Medicine.
Lily: "Very good! I can see all of you have magical smiles today. Oh? It looks like we have an exception, though!"
    Kotaro: "G-g-good morning-"
Lily: "I can't hear you! Manners are important, remember?"
    Kotaro: "Oh, I-I-I'm sorry..."
  • Humiliation Conga: Played for Laughs. Poor Kotaro has all of his thunder stolen throughout the episode.
    • Lily, a twelve-year-old girl, decides to take over the morning briefing for a change, completely sapping away all of his authority. He can do nothing but sadly take a seat and watch.
    • His talent show performance is absolutely miserable, landing him a low score with the judges.
  • Improvised Clothes: Lily is able to retrofit her outfit into a cutesy jazz-dancer costume, complete with a improvised song and dance routine.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Light feels his performance — while good for what it is — displays none of the pure ingenuity and heart that Lily showcased. She convinces him that regardless of the comparison, he is still a great performer with a lot of potential, and that he shouldn't stop pursuing his dream of broadway.
  • The Runner-Up Takes It All: The talent show ends with Lily and Light facing off, with both of them choosing to sing the same song as their final act. Light gives a typical but technically sound performance, while Lily, not wanting her act to feel like a rehash, comes up with a new, more upbeat arrangement of the song and peppers her vocals with Scatting for a performance that's all her own. The judges ultimately rule in Light's favour, but he sees it as a Pyrrhic Victory as he's sure the audience will remember Lily's performance much more than his. Sure enough, a montage at the end of the episode shows her performance blew up in popularity.
  • Scatting: Lily performs a song called "Little Bodda Bope", which is 90% comprised of scatting. It's done like this because its a remix of a much more emotional song called "Life", which Lily was going to perform during the talent show, but her opponent manages to sing exactly that before she gets her turn. Needless to say, Lily's scatting skills are exceptionally good.
  • They Stole Our Act: Lily reaches the talent show finals and plans to perform a song she used to sing with her father. The other finalist, Light, goes first... and announces he's going to perform the exact same song. In the time it takes him to do so, Lily manages to come up with a jazzy, upbeat scat-singing rendition of the song, which she then performs. She doesn't win, but the performance goes viral, and her opponent is left feeling as though the wrong person won.
