-Yami Yugi

Tropes

  • Agent Scully: Kaiba's status as such is finally justified: he cannot accept that Yugi was a pharaoh in a past life because that would make Yugi richer and more powerful than him.
  • Bad Liar: Joey's insistence that he won his card game against Kaiba is not at all convincing. Yami believes him anyway.
    • Yami later struggles with his complete lack of a poker face while trying to convince Melvin that he totally doesn't have the perfect card to win the duel with.
  • Big "NO!": Melvin does this several times in response to a powerful move by Yami... followed by a Little "No" to reveal that he had the perfect counter all along and was just screwing with everyone.
  • Canon Discontinuity: Rather than referring to "Melvin" who owns the god card "Mega Ultra Chicken" (which are their official names in the abridged series), everybody in this episode just calls him "Marik" and the god card "Winged Dragon of Ra" (their official names in the original series). This can probably just be chalked up to forgetfulness on LittleKuriboh's part.
  • Comedic Spanking: Melvin plans to do this to Yami if he wins their duel.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Joey lies to Yugi and tells him he defeated Kaiba in their third-place duel when he actually lost in one turn. Tristan, who witnessed the duel, somehow believes this and tells Joey he's proud of him for winning.
  • Disney Death: You never really thought Marik would be killed off, did you?
  • Dying Declaration of Love: A platonic instance between Marik and Odion. Even with some jokes sprinkled in, it's a genuine Tear Jerker.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Marik acts more dignified while awaiting his own death than he has in the entire series thus far (probably because O.O.C. Is Serious Business).
    • In a very satisfying and karmic switch of their usual roles, Melvin averts this trope.
  • He's Back!: Marik's back, baby.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Acknowledged. Melvin refers to Yugi as being Yami's "hetero life mate". Yami says himself that they are "closer than the most intimate of lovers".
  • Inner Monologue: Parodied. Kaiba, Yami, and Tristan all try to do this at the same time and end up talking over each other's thoughts.
  • Insistent Terminology: You know, it's really more of a Purple Realm than a Shadow Realm.
  • Karmic Death: Melvin experiences death by hugging.
  • Mind Link Mates: Averted. Yami is completely oblivious to the pain his dueling is putting Yugi through.
  • Only Sane Man: Bizarrely, Melvin is this for much of the episode.
  • Protagonist-Centered Morality: Melvin gives a pretty reasonable accusation that Yami can't exactly condemn him for his actions when he himself is a former pharaoh and slave owner.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Marik uses the death of Bakura's mother as a punchline in The Stinger. You would think that an accidental Self-Made Orphan would have a little more sympathy, but apparently not.
  • Rocky Roll Call: When Odion shows up.
  • Running Gag: I'm just sayin'.
  • Shout-Out: "Swiggity-swag-o-realm, say hello to the Shadow Realm!"
    • Yami thinks that Melvin's Metal Slime Obelisk is a shiny Obelisk.
    • "Rocky!"
  • Talking in Your Sleep: Marik (who is unconscious for the entire duel) mutters about Bakura's penchant for Crazy Consumption in his sleep.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Interestingly enough, Melvin starts into one even before it looks like he's going to lose the duel, largely due to Yami spending a fair amount of the duel casually rebuffing Melvin's attempts at psychological intimidation by nitpicking inconsistencies (referring to the Shadow Realm as a "Purple Realm") or getting lost in tangents (becoming excited by Melvin's "Shiny Obelisk"). To be fair, Melvin wasn't the most stable guy to begin with.
