Recap / Yu Gi Oh First Anime Series Ep 16 Breadths Charge Crisis Of The White Robe

Go To

Jonouchi goes to visit his sister Shizuka, who is ill. He develops a crush on her nurse, Miyuki, after she treats wounds he received from a fight while defending Yugi. While Shizuka tries to set her brother and her nurse up as a couple, the corrupt Dr. Goyu fires Miyuki after trying to hit on her and getting slapped for it. Jonouchi learns he's more interested in playing golf than caring for patients, but Goyu then threatens to remove Shizuka from the hospital if he tries to expose him.

Yugi hears of this and challenges the doctor to a game of golf, winning by using a stethoscope and knowledge of the hospital's layout. As punishment, Goyu's penalty game is to see the zombified wraiths of patients that died to his negligence, causing him to admit he doesn't care about his work. Meanwhile, Jonouchi's hopes for romance go up in flames as Miyuki leaves town and will continue practicing on a remote island with another doctor. While she says Jonouchi can visit over summer vacation, it's clear that she intends to date the other doctor, and Yugi's friends cheer Jonouchi up with a pity party.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Doctor Jerk: Dr. Goyu cares more about playing golf than caring for patients, tries to hit on the nurse Miyuki, and threatens to remove Shizuka from the hospital when Jonouchi tries to expose him, even knowing that Shizuka's recovery potentially depends on her staying there.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Shizuka makes an appearance here before Duelist Kingdom where she was Jonouchi's motivation for winning.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The prologue shows Dr. Goyo's latest patient, an old father, dying before his devastated family. As the doctor leaves to let them grieve, Dr. Goyo does not share their sentiment: he's thinking about golfing. This shows his apathy towards his patients, whereas a real doctor would do all they could to save the patient or at least feel some remorse they couldn't save them.
  • Florence Nightingale Effect: Jonouchi fell in love with Miyuki after she treated his wounds.
  • Irony: Dark Yugi beat Dr. Goyo at a golf tournament in the latter's own hospital, by utilizing the nurse center's mail drop. That's right, Dr. Goyo doesn't know his own hospital as well as a doctor should.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Dr. Goyu's punishment after losing the Shadow Game is to be haunted by the zombies of every patient he failed to care for. And if that's any indication, countless zombies haunt him. This drives him insane, to the point he shares evidence of his negligence just to have even a little peace of mind.
  • May–December Romance: Miyuki's exact age isn't specified, but she's an older woman while Jonouchi's still in high school.
  • Race for Your Love: Subverted. Jonouchi races to meet Miyuki at the station before she leaves, but finds his roses have all had their petals fall off. Miyuki accepts the rose stems anyway, but says she was planning on leaving to begin with and will continue practicing on a remote island with another doctor. While she says Jonouchi can visit over summer vacation, it's clear that she intends to date the other doctor.
  • Shipper on Deck: Shizuka tries to set her brother and Miyuki up.
  • Smug Snake: Dr. Goyu is so confident in his golfing skills he doesn't take Yugi seriously at all.
