Tropes
- Chekhov's Classroom: Xena's rules of survival, particularly about how Gabrielle is good at talking her way out of trouble.
- Extra Digits: Gabrielle says she was born with an extra toe on her right foot. This causes Xena to start glancing downward.Gabrielle: Don't look! It's gone now!
- Pet the Dog: Elkton is shunned by the villagers and can't even buy basic goods. Xena buys him the halter for a horse he was looking for and drops it off anonymously.
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Xena says she killed Termin for attacking her village and killing people she grew up with.
- Talk to the Fist: After Xena wins, Manus insists this is not over and that Morpheus will make them pay for this. Gabrielle punches him out.
- Thou Shalt Not Kill:
- Xena has long passed the point where she crossed this, of course, even being confronted in the Dreamscape by her very first kill (Termin). Her argument to Gabrielle is that everything changes for a person once he or she crosses the line.
- Gabrielle was abducted because she has never killed before. The tests are to push her into doing that so she can be sacrificed to Morpheus. Gabrielle trying to maintain her blood innocence will be a recurring theme until she loses it in Season 3 and has to deal with the fallout.
- Villain Respect: Manus is admittedly impressed by the way Gabrielle keeps passing the tests without killing anyone.
