Recap / What We Do In The Shadows S 4 E 2 The Lamp

Go To

Nadja and Laszlo continue to pester the Guide into trying to make the Vampiric Council headquarters their new nightclub. Even after persuading the Guide that the building is outdated and needs to be renovated, her wraiths continue to respond to her buried feelings and attack Nadja's contracted workmen, so Laszlo and the Guide have a therapy session together to understand why the Guide deep down does not want the building to be changed.

Nandor begins his quest to find a new wife in earnest, but cannot find much luck even with his massive dowry. After Guillermo notices a djinn lamp and suggests Nandor rub it in the other direction (which he'd never thought to try), Nandor finds himself in command of a djinn and promptly resurrects his 37 wives from his human life to see if he can find an ideal marriage candidate that way.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Turns out the Guide's job was originally a punishment for being a "naughty vampire". The worst of her offenses? Having the hots for Van Helsing. Explains why she kept fantasizing about Guillermo, though by the time the others talk him into a hookup, she's managed to get over it (to his relief).
  • Been There, Shaped History: Laszlo influenced Sigmund Freud's theory in psychology with, as Laszlo puts it, his "massive John Thomas" when the two were in steam baths and decided that renaming "hand envy" to penis envy was the way to go.
  • Circling Saw: The Guide's wraiths dispose of one of the construction workers by sawing a hole in the floor underneath his ladder.
  • Continuity Nod: Nandor still can't speak or understand Al-Qolnidarese (in actuality, Farsi) when his 37 wives are resurrected. Since he now has a Djinn at his command, he skips trying to jog his memory of the language from the last time he had to communicate with someone from Al-Qolnidar, and just wishes to make them all fluent in English.
  • Destination Defenestration: One of Nandor's wifes jumps out the window in fear when she sees him holding a scorpion.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Nandor's selection process for his bride-to-be is very reminiscent of Bachelor-type dating shows. He is even seen giving one of his wives a rose at one point.
  • Eternal Sexual Freedom: Nandor casually mentions having both "guy wives" and "girl wives", and we do get to see some men during his selection process.
  • Lame Last Words: When Nandor and Guillermo think they might die, Nandor complains that Guillermo's last words are about rubbing something the wrong way.
  • There Can Only Be One: Nandor believes that one of his wives was someone he deeply loved, but he doesn't remember who. He then immediately starts whittling them down after resurrection to whomever best qualifies by his standards, having the Djinn make the other 36 dead again. Not kill them, there's no murdering, he's just making them go back to being dead.
  • Wasteful Wishing: Nandor burns through a few wishes by telling the Djinn to cycle through different hair colors on his final wife before deciding the original hair color was best. Even though the Djinn has shrewdly tricked him into wasting wishes, he finds it so tedious that he tries to warn Nandor off.
