Recap / Wednesday S1E8 "A Murder of Woes"

Go To

Wednesday lands in trouble with Principal Weems, but that's just the start of her problems. To fight an ancient evil, she'll need all her friends’ help.

Tropes:

  • 11th-Hour Superpower:
    • Goody reveals that Wednesday's necklace allows her to interact with spirits, allowing Goody to heal her after she's been mortally wounded.
    • Enid finally transforms into her werewolf form to take on Tyler's Hyde form.
  • Answer Cut: Just as Eugene drops a huge hint that the mastermind wore red boots, the scene cuts to said boots, and the camera then pans up to reveal the true culprit being none other than Thornhill.
  • Behind the Black: During their confrontation at the police station, Tyler proudly gloats to Wednesday that he is the true Hyde, with a police officer not five feet away from them. However, because the officer is out of frame, it is assumed that she did not hear this confession.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Before Tyler can kill Wednesday, Enid shows up as a werewolf and manages to hold her own against him.
    • It's a bit subtle, but Bianca stepping in and making an attempt to stab Crackstone is enough for the evil pilgrim to be thrown off-balance so that Wednesday can finish the job.
    • When Laurel appears with a gun to shoot Wednesday, she's stopped by Eugene and his swarm of bees.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing:
    • Tyler at first acts truly oblivious to the Hyde side of himself, but in the police station, he drops the mask to taunt Wednesday and state that, not only did he eventually remember what he did while the Hyde, he grew to enjoy it.
    • Then there's Marilyn Thornhill, a.k.a.Laurel Gates who is using her public, friendly persona to hide her true personality and motivations.
  • Bluffing the Murderer: Wednesday claims that Tyler is now on her side to get Thornhill to confess to her entire plot. At which point "Tyler" turns out to be Weems using her shapeshifting abilities. Too bad Thornhill still has a needle of Nightshade poison in her pocket, which she promptly rams into Weems' neck.
  • Canis Latinicus: Laurel Gates uses a Latin incantation to resurrect her long-dead ancestor Joseph Crackstone. Attempting to translate the incantation leaves much to be desired. Depending on the spelling, it translates either as "The red town would be thinned, my cue nates, would bless the stain, the esquientes of the unnatural would be cut against them" or "Let the red commune keep, as my ancestors did, bless the silence and, with the contradelles esquientes from the unnatural, sleeping not ae, expiring fills the breasts".
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Weems points out that if Wednesday had just come to her with her suspicions on the Hyde, they could have worked together, to which Wednesday retorts that Weems has done little to earn her trust.
  • Everyone Has Standards: The other Nightshades immediately want out when Wednesday reveals her intention to torture Tyler.
  • Evil All Along: At first, Wednesday assumes that Tyler truly is oblivious to what he did as the Hyde. Then he reveals to her that not only has he been aware of it all, but he enjoyed it and willingly went along with Thornhill.
  • Final Battle:
    • After an entire season of tease from Rowan's vision and the drawing that came with it, Wednesday faces off the man who massacred her ancestors' kind and was destined to fight: Joseph Crackstone.
    • Prior to that, we get to witness a glorious clash of two monsters: Enid (in her werewolf form) and Tyler (in his Hyde form).
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Thornhill gives Wednesday some white oleander as a parting gift. Wednesday notes that oleander is deadly, which is appropriate given what we learn about Thornhill just minutes later.
  • Get Out!: Xavier, having enough of Wednesday for mistreating him and getting him wrongfully arrested, tells her to leave him alone.
  • The Glomp: Enid gives one of these to Wednesday after they survive their respective battles. Wednesday initially pulls away before responding with a softer hug of her own.
  • Identical Grandson: Joseph Crackstone initially mistakes Wednesday for Goody Addams. Both Wednesday and Goody are played by Jenna Ortega.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: When an awaken Eugene tells Wednesday he heard that she spent days at his bedsides, she enjoins him to never mention this again.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Having exposed Thornhill for who she really is, Weems still calls her Marilyn, prompting Thornhill to say "My name is Laurel!" and stab her in the neck with a syringe filled with nightshade.
  • Post-Final Boss: Laurel is the last villain to be defeated in the season, but she is swiftly taken care of by Eugene Ottinger's bees with a final kick from Wednesday in her face. This is in stark contrast to the epic face-off between Wednesday and Crackstone (as well as Enid and Tyler).
  • Scary Stinging Swarm: Just as Thornill is about to kill Wednesday, Eugene sics a whole swarm of his beloved bees upon her, and they promptly start stinging her into submission.
  • Sequel Hook: As Wednesday is leaving Nevermore, she receives a text from an unknown number with pictures of her and Xavier followed by a message saying, "I'm watching you." Her car also drives by the vehicle containing Tyler, who wakes up and transforms into his Hyde form.
  • Shooting the Swarm: When Laurel sees the swarm of bees coming her way she fires her gun at them, to no avail.
  • Shovel Strike: After killing Weems, Thornhill knocks out Wednesday with a shovel.
  • Spotting the Thread: Eugene Ottinger pointing out red boots from the explosion he saw while the Rave'N was going one is enough for Wednesday to realize that Marilyn Thornhill is Laurel Gates.
  • Taking the Bullet: When Crackstone redirects the arrow that Xavier fired at him, Wednesday leaps in front of it in order to protect Xavier.
  • This Is for Emphasis, Bitch!: Eugene to Thornill, while his bees are swarming her.
Eugene: That's what you get for messing up with Nevermore, bitch!
  • Wham Line: The start of Tyler and Wednesday's conversation at the police station lets Wednesday know what Tyler is really like.
Tyler: Tell me, how does it feel?
    Wednesday: How does what feel?
    Tyler: ... To lose.
