Recap / Wars Of Frozen Flames: The Feeble King (IV)

Go To

The year is 1478. Following the victory of the Sherbet forces at the Battle of Whomp City, Lord Richard Koopa regains control of the realm for the most part. This however does not sit good with many of the lords who lost kin during the battle, and thus they start plotting with Queen Cynder to get Lord Richard out of the way.

  • Artistic License – History: Winona offers Tulisa, Tobias, Rickon and Ursula chocolate cake upon their arrival at Twinsy Tropics Castle. Chocolate wasn't known to Europeans (with the continent the series takes place in being a counterpart of Europe) until the discovery of the Americas in 1492 and the various expeditions done in the early 1500s (and as seen by Tulisa's dialogue in Part I of "The Feeble King", this world's equivalent of the Americas hasn't been discovered yet), and even then it wasn't imported over to Europe until the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs. More egregiously, chocolate cake wasn't invented until the 18th century. This is probably justified in that the Koopa Kingdom has a region called Choco Mountain, so the idea of finding cocoa beans before the discovery of the FFU's counterpart of the Americas doesn't seem so outlandish.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Happens twice.
    • Erik burns a soldier's face to death (literally melting all the skin away and leaving his burnt skull exposed) for accidentally getting dirt on his shield.
    • Symon "The Black" throws a knife at an innkeeper's face just for asking why they were showing hostility towards Rickon and Rose.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: After Edrick Greyford's death after the Battle of Whomp City, Lily mourns over him as both Sirs Ethan Rook and Henry Birch comfort her, then she gets over it quickly after Henry offers her a trip to his father's castle but Ethan claims he saw her first.
  • Nephewism: Rodrick keeps up his role as James' guardian after he was separated from Jane upon her remarriage to Korrin. James on his part, who is three years old at this point, believes that Rodrick is his father.
  • It's Personal: When Queen Cynder gives Erik Bane the chance to fight Lord Richard's army, he takes the offer in a heartbeat after seeing his father was slain by Richard's forces.
Erik: I'll slay every man, woman, and child with even a drop of Sherbert blood, and then I'll burn their castle to the ground!
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: As revealed by Lily to Ursula, she is completely aware of Tobias' inflated ego, superiority complex and poor treatment of her and those around him, but that she decides to play along with it, pretending to be a devoted and air-headed mistress because it makes Tobias an easy target for manipulation, with Lily being convinced that she will be able to achieve status and wealth if she pulls Tobias' strings in the right way.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Lord Sylver and Rosanna, Korrin's parents, don't exactly treat Jane the best way. While Lord Sylver is more-so passive aggressive towards her, ignoring the fact that his entire family had been Slut-Shaming her and calling her out for trying to defend herself from the insults, Rosanna shows contempt towards her, mainly the fact that she had her child at a very young age, and that it rendered her sterile in the process. As explained by Korrin later on, Rosanna doesn't hate Jane per-se, but is just incredibly disappointed in the fact that Jane won't ever be able to have children with Korrin.
  • Original Character: Princess Cyndie, Cynder and (supposedly) John's newborn daughter doesn't have a real-life counterpart, being one of the few characters to be original to the show. Cynder also mentions giving birth to a son before Godwin that only lived for three days, whereas Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou only ever had one son, Prince Edward. Likewise, while Lord Royce Sturmwolk is based on John Mowbray, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, his four daughters are completely original to the show, as are two of his three sons (John Mowbray only had one son).
  • Rage Breaking Point: Jane spent the entire dinner with Korrin's family enduring all the Slut-Shaming they subject her to, but it's Korrin's aunt Kristina telling her that James might be a bastard that ultimately causes her to explode and defend herself, which only gets her scolded by Lord Sylver (who blatantly overlooks all the insults she received throughout the entire dinner) and insulted some more, causing her to storm off the dining hall in anger and frustration.
  • Mama Bear:
    • Cynder's main motivation for starting to plot against Lord Richard is because she believes that he will try to take Godwin away from her, and potentially kill him to regain the position of heir to the throne.
    • Jane had perfectly, but with frustration, endured all the Slut-Shaming Korrin's family subjected her to, but one of Korrin's aunts questioning James' legitimacy is the last straw for Jane, causing her to insult Korrin's aunt.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: When Lord Waldron asks about what John and Cynder's newborn daughter, Princess Cyndie, looks like, Lord Alain Blackfoot finds his interest "quite frightening" then fellow Sherbert ally Lord Manfred Python sets off his nerves when about who will marry the Princess when she comes of age.
Lord Waldron: That's not what I meant!
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Yet more characters based on real-life figures from the actual Wars of the Roses make a debut or start having a prominent role in this episode:
    • Lady Winona Windwaker — Anne Beauchamp, 16th Countess of Warwick
    • Lady Vanessa Windwaker — Margaret Beauchamp, Countess of Shrewsbury
    • Lady Rosanna Python — Anne Neville, Duchess of Buckingham
    • Lord Royce Sturmwolk — John Mowbray, 3rd Duke of Norfolk
  • Outliving One's Offspring: As revealed by Birchard, his only son died in the Battle of Whomp City.
  • Shout-Out: According to Word of God, Korrin's cousins Zachary and Kuthbert were named after Zach and Cody.
  • She Is All Grown Up: While she hasn't finished growing yet, the last time we saw Ursula was in Part II, (which took place in the year 1476), where she was still a pre-teen. Two years after that, she has started to grow into a young woman, being more similar to her sister Anna, who is rather attractive.
  • Slut-Shaming: Jane is on the receiving end of this from the Sylver family, with Rosanna looking down upon her for giving birth to a child at the age of 14, Korrin's cousins Zachary and Kuthbert mocking her for her sterility, and Bennis' wife Kristina even questioning her son James' legitimacy. The last one in particular depletes Jane's patience, who insults Kristina back, revealing that she had her first child at an even younger age than Jane. This attitude wasn't the least common for the time the series takes place in, unfortunately.
  • I Want Grandkids: As revealed by Korrin, his mother Rosanna doesn't hate Jane as she believes, but is rather disappointed in their marriage because Jane is sterile and thus won't ever be able to produce an heir for Korrin.
  • You Killed My Father: Erik and Blayne have this attitude towards Lord Richard for killing their fathers during the Battle of Whomp City.
