The year is 1476. Tropes

  • Dirty Coward: After Sigmund was imprisoned by Richard, his son Blayne fled to Karhar city in the Bohnenkraut Kingdom, abandoning Cynder and their unhatched bastard child. Seems like father and son really have a lot in common.
  • Freudian Excuse: This episode basically shows exactly when Cynder started to become cruel: when she first met John for their upcoming arranged marriage, she tried to leave a good first impression on him and was nothing but nice and friendly, but John immediately began crying and throwing a tantrum when he first saw her, whining about how he wanted a blonde woman as if she were some kind of toy. From there on it became worse, as it's stated that John would often ignore Cynder because he finds women disgusting (in a very childish way), causing Cynder to turn more and more bitter as the years went by.
  • Happily Married: Korrin and Jane's marriage starts off as this, as Korrin treats Jane wonderfully and promises to make her happy. It says a lot considering it was an Arranged Marriage.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: Due to his childish personality, John thinks that Girls Have Cooties and thus is not fond of women, which led to him ignoring Cynder throughout their marriage.
  • Girls Have Cooties: It's revealed that John thinks that "girls are gross" and it's the reason why he often ignores Cynder.
  • Gold Digger: Korrin's brother Harrin is only marrying Sigmund's daughter to become a lord and get richer.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Rodrick appears to be jealous of Korrin for making Jane happy. When Lord Thornton asks Rodrick why didn't he marry Jane himself if he wanted to be with her, Rodrick tells him that it would have been disrespectful towards his deceased brother, as Jane is his widow. The way Rodrick stares at the direction Korrin and Jane ran off to seems to confirm that yes, he is jealous of Korrin.
  • Hot for Preacher: Three young women are seen in a hot tub with Archbishop Whitehall, who is significantly older than them.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: In addition to John ignoring her throughout their marriage, Cynder has now been abandoned by Blayne, who she thought she had a serious relationship with. This combined with how people often look down on her for being Beanish, is a reason as to why she is who she is, she wants to feel any kind of genuine affection from someone. Cynder procceeds to seduce Theodrick while John is in a vegetative state, but soon finds that their relationship will not work because Theodrick is not the sharpest tool in the shed.
  • Lady Macbeth: As soon as John wakes up, Cynder has him remove Richard from the power and restore Sigmund as King's Claw. John gives into her demands, but Richard escapes and avoids imprisonment.
  • Loyal to the Position: Lord Sylver will be a Professional Buttkisser to whoever holds the power. He is initially loyal to Sigmund and talks bad about Richard, but immediately performs a 180-degree turn when Richard overthrows Sigmund Cynder has John restore Sigmund as the King's Claw and arrest Richard, Lord Sylver goes to back to his original "stance" regarding the two lords.
  • Meal Ticket: Harrin makes no effort in denying that he is only marrying Sigmund's daughter for money.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Like the last episode, here we see the debut or rise to prominence of a set of characters based on real-life figures from the actual Wars of the Roses:
    • Ronan Blackfoot — Thomas Percy, 1st Baron Egremont
    • Hayez Blackfoot — Sir Richard Percy
    • Symon Sanderling — Ralph Percy
    • Lady Anna Koopa — Anne, Duchess of Exeter
    • Ursula Koopa — Margaret of York
    • Joanna Tyebolt — Lady Eleanor Talbot
    • Lord Herard Bane — Thomas Clifford, 8th Baron Clifford
    • Sir Erik Bane — John Clifford, 9th Baron Clifford
    • Lady Jane Phoenix (Daughter of Sigmund) — Margaret Beaufort, Countess of Stafford
    • Lord Gerald Garnet — Henry Holland, 3rd Duke of Exeter
    • Prince Godwin Koopa — Edward of Westminster, Prince of Wales
  • One-Steve Limit: Lady Jane has a cousin who is also named Jane. Similarly, during the double wedding between Korrin & Jane and Harrin & Cousin Jane, there are two knights that are both named John Smith.
  • Romancing the Widow: Subverted. Rodrick really would like to marry Jane and make her happy, but he couldn't bring himself to prupose marriage to her due to her being the widow of his deceased brother, which he thinks would be disrespecting his memory. Thus when Jane and Korrin are married off to each other and seeing that Korrin treats Jane wonderfully, Rodrick becomes a bit jealous.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage:
    • As revealed by Lady Tulisa to Robert, her and Lord Richard's marriage was arranged. Despite this, they ended up falling deeply in love with each other.
    • Jane and Korrin seem to start off as this, as despite being an Arranged Marriage Korrin promises Jane to make her happy and to allow her to visit her son as much as they can. Jane and Korrin developing a strong bond also seems to make Rodrick jealous.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After John awakens, Cynder immediately has him arrest Lord Richard and give Sigmund the position of King's Claw back. Richard however knocks down Rodrick and Thedorick and escapes in his mustie in order to avoid arrest.
  • Stealth Pun: Parakarry delivering a letter in which Sigmund's intentions of becoming regent are stated, that he used as Toilet Paper Substitute to Lord Richard might be the series way of saying that Sigmund is full of shit.
  • Toilet Paper Substitute: Parakarry had "an itch down there" on his way to deliver a letter to Richard and used it as toilet paper, leaving some of it covered in feces.
Richard: Good grief! Just use a stick like a normal person!
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Cynder significantlly softens up after her son is born. She is even nice to Jane, who she is constantly insulting and demeaning. That said, she's still completely against Richard being the regent and has John free Sigmund and arrest Richard after he recovers.
  • Weddings for Everyone: Korrin Sylver and Lady Jane Phoenix have an arranged marriage planned, but Lord Horace Sylver prefers to turn it into a double wedding with his other son Harrin and Sigmund's daughter, who is also named Jane. The reason Lord Sylver did this was because he thought that not enough people would show up for Korrin and Jane's wedding due to Korrin being The Unfavorite to his father.
  • Who's Laughing Now?: A non-villanous example. Everyone laughed at Lord Richard when he tried to knock sense into the nobles for appointing Lord Sigmund as the King's Claw. Now that he has overthrown Sigmund, people are no longer laughing at him and actually respect him.
  • Your Mom: "Your Dad" in this case. Lord Richard repeatedly asks Lord Symon Blackfoot to pay Sir Torrence and Jorgon Python to make up for the ambush his sons did to the former's wedding feast, to which Symon refuses and insults Richard and his late father, calling him a coward who died begging for his life. In response to this, Richard has Symon's kids arrested, stating that they will be the ones begging for their lives next time he does something funny.
