Recap / Wakfu S1E4 "The Ugly Pagent"

Go To

When Sadlygrove finds a tower where a beautiful maiden is held, he quickly finds himself a prisoner of the Ugly Princesses- a quartet of bewitched ladies who need the kiss of a brave knight to undo their cursed ugliness. Can "Dally" swallow his disgust to do so?

Tropes:

  • Aesop Amnesia: The Princesses were cursed because of their habit to insult suitors, which got them in trouble when they tried it on the God Osamodas. After being turned back, they just go back to their usual ways.
  • Bewitched Amphibians: The Princesses' Tower is full of frogs that, as it turns, were previous attempts to undo the curse. If the Magic Kiss isn't sincere, the curse turns the kisser into a frog!
  • Brawnhilda: One of the princesses is currently cursed with such a form. When the curse is lifted, she's a Statuesque Stunner instead.
  • Fan Disservice: The largest princess removes her ample robes to reveal a form-fitting luchador outfit which exposes her hairy armpits. Hilariously enough, while all the others are disgusted, Ruel is lovestruck.
  • Girls with Moustaches: Princesse Edalipe is almost entirely covered in hair and beard, save for half of her face and her arms.
  • Heel Realization: In the end Princess Ecna realizes just how desperate and monstrous they have become in their desire to end the curse and provides an escape route for the heroes. In return, Dally sends a flying kiss which actually undoes the curse.
  • Lava Pit: The beauty pagent includes a walk over a magma pit right in the middle of the room. Lampshaded by Yugo, who asks why there's a lava pit inside a tower (and Amalia assuming they need it to warm up the place).
  • Living Structure Monster: If any intruder is rejected by the cursed gate, the gate itself turns into a monster to chase away any unwelcome guest.
  • Meaningful Name: The Princesses' names reflect their current cursed status (for example, Ecna (acne) is covered in zit-like boils).
  • Modesty Towel: Almost the whole cast wears one, though not just to keep modesty but also to hide the "ugly princesses" disguises. Unfortunately, the only one to have the towel fall off is Ruel.
  • Prehensile Hair: Princesse Edalipe can do it with both her hair and beard.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Eva just puts on a dress and lets down her heels as part of her "Ugly Princess" disguise, ironically unaware that this makes her anything but ugly.
  • Staircase Tumble: Eva trips over her heels while at the top of the tower's stairs, resulting in an Overly Long Gag of her tumbling down to the bottom.
