Hunk: Look, it's the dawn of a new day.
A Robeast has been deployed on the Balmera and Team Voltron has no idea how to stop it. On top of all that, the Balmera is dying and its citizens need to be evacuated.

Tropes:

  • Anything but That!: Hunk yells in a panic that he hopes the huge ship that fell to the Balmera didn't house a giant monster and instead was empty, or better yet, full of space candy.
  • Beam Spam:
    • The Robeast's specialty. It has dozens of eyes that can all fire independently targeted lasers. They don't seem to be terribly accurate, but when it fills up the skies with lasers (and the team doesn't want the lasers to hit the Balmera), it's very effective.
    • Turns out Voltron can do it, too. Its BFG's second attack consists of dozens of Homing Lasers that take out all the Robeast's eyes.
  • Beam-O-War: The team tries to do this with Voltron's shoulder cannon, but the Robeast's beam is just too powerful.
  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: The Robeast is a master of Beam Spam. So Voltron counters with Beam Spam plus Homing Lasers.
  • BFG: Hunk's Bayard activates a BFG for Voltron that can fire both a Wave-Motion Gun and Beam Spam Homing Lasers.
  • Cue the Sun: After the Balmera is healed, the episode ends with the sun rising.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: When one massive beam proves ineffective against the Robeast, Voltron's targeting system activates, allowing the shoulder cannon to fire a salvo of smaller Homing Lasers that take out all of its eyes individually.
  • Eye Beams: Compounded by the fact that the Robeast is absolutely covered in eyes makes for quite a foe.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: The Robeast has eyes all over its body, on its arms, and rotating all over its head.
  • Face Death with Dignity: At first, the Balmerans are willing to go down with their planet when it starts to collapse.
  • Go for the Eye: By necessity, considering the Robeast is almost nothing but eyes and those eyes are shooting lasers. Voltron only turns the tide of the battle after hitting every single one of its eyes.
  • Homing Lasers: Voltron's lasers individually target each one of the Robeast's eyes and unerringly hit their target.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Just as the Red Lion did for Keith, when the team doesn't know what to do, the Yellow Lion reaches out to Hunk and shows him how to use his Bayard to provide Voltron with a huge shoulder mounted cannon.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: Allura communicates to and gets all the Balmerans to the Castle when she learns their planet is dying. When the planets' collapse leaves dozens of Balmerans stranded and unable to get to the ship, she then performs a ceremony that will at least stabilize the planet and renew it so that the people can stay.
  • Post-Victory Collapse: Allura collapses after performing the restoration ceremony.
  • Race Against the Clock: Team Voltron has to distract the Robeast long enough so that the Balmerans can get to safety on the Castle of Lions, but short enough so that they're not caught in the Balmera's death backlash. Enough damage happens to the planet so that the Balmerans can't reach the ship, so the team has to defeat Robeast head on.
  • Rasputinian Death: The Robeast is basically defeated when Voltron shoots all of its eyes at once. Then it gets an epic punch for good measure. Turns out it's still Not Quite Dead and only killed when the Balmera "eats" it.
  • Roboteching: Voltron's Homing Lasers shoot outward and then swing inward to hit the Robeast.
  • Sacred Hospitality: Allura's first plan is to offer sanctuary to the Balmerans on her ship, the Castle of Lions.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Allura tries to persuade the Balmerans to leave the planet with her on the ship and with Voltron. At first they refuse, preferring to Face Death with Dignity, but she manages to persuade them not to give up since she hasn't done so.
  • Tempting Fate: Having trouble dealing with the Robeast's laser eyes, Shiro suggests they split up back into lions as it can't target all of them at once. Cue the Robeast revealing its arms are covered in laser eyes and it can keep track of and target all of them at once.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: The Robeast's chest-eye fires a massively powerful beam. Hunk's Bayard also creates a BFG that fires one, but it's weaker than the Robeast's.
  • World-Healing Wave: Allura decides to do massive-scale life ritual to save the Balmera. It's obviously not enough to completely restore the Balmera to its former glory, but a wave of new crystals do begin to start forming on the surface.
