If we want to take this monster down, there's only one way to do it. Form Voltron!
Keith: I thought Voltron was the most powerful weapon in the universe!
Hunk: Yeah, so how is this monster kicking our butts?

As the crew gets acquainted with some of the local life of Planet Arus, Shiro learns more about his forgotten time as a prisoner from the escaped captives, and an enemy from his past attacks as a giant Robeast.

Tropes:

  • A Friend in Need: Shiro purposefully injures Matt while pretending he was full of blood lust in order to take the younger pilots place in the Gladiator match.
  • Artificial Intelligence: The Black and Green Lion fly out of the castle hangars on their own to protect their respective Paladins from falling debris caused by the Robeast landing.
  • Cargo Cult: Having been stationed there for 10,000 years, the native Arusians clearly believe the Castle of Lions to be of divine origin.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Shiro purposely injures Pidge's brother, Matt, and acts blood thirsty to have the Galran's choose him to fight and have Matt sent to labor camp where he'd be safer.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Most of the group agree that the Arusians are adorable.
  • Big "NO!": Pidge screams this as Shiro pulls them away from the Galra ship that had data on where her family was.
  • Epic Fail: Lance tries to defeat the energy orb by kicking it, but misses, getting Voltron smacked in the face.
  • Epic Flail: As a gladiator, the Robeast had a variation of this, but the ball was a ball of energy that's flung from a stick without any kind of tether. As a robeast, the flail is built into its arm.
  • Honor Before Reason: The Arusians who believe Allura is the Lion Goddess, attempt to appease her with a "dance of apology". When she tries to tell them that this wasn't necessary, the leader takes this as her being displeased and then the Arusians attempts to throw themselves in a sacrificial fire instead. Allura hurriedly tells them to continue the dance.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Shiro orders Pidge to attack the Robeast with lasers, but Pidge accidentally activates Voltron's shield instead.
  • If It Tastes Bad, It Must Be Good for You: How Coran reacts when the Paladins note that his Altean food smells terrible.
  • Logical Weakness: The Gladiator could only throw his orb three times in succession before he had to keep it for an extended recharge duration. This still applies to the Robeast and is exploited by the crew to defeat it.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: When unarmed attacks prove ineffective against the Robeast, the Red Lion calls out to Keith and shows him how his Bayard can be used to summon a sword for Voltron.
  • Rule of Three: Myzak's orb can only be thrown three times before it needs time to recharge.
  • Secret-Keeper: Shiro to Pidge, knowing their true gender and identity.
Shiro: Don't worry, your secrets safe with me.
  • Tuck and Cover: Shiro can be seen covering Pidge with his body from the falling debris.
  • Wham Line: "Your father and brother would be proud of you, Katie."
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Earlier in the episode, it's commented during a training exercise that Lance made Voltron fall by not keeping his footing. When he is set up to kick the gladiator's energy mace, it seems like a Chekhov's Skill. It's not.
