Tropes found in The Birthday Thief:

  • Birthday Hater: Motato has this as his Freudian Excuse, saying that no one ever remembered his birthday, which is the reason why he plans to steal birthdays. He lightens up a bit at the end of the episode, after LarryBoy and Junior secretly give him a cake and a present.
  • Blowing a Raspberry: Motato does this after his Villain Song ends.
  • Chekhov's Gag: The push-button raft that Bob inadvertently activates while trying to get out of the Larry-Cave later comes in handy to block off the vent in which the cold wind from Motato's De-birthday-ficator is coming from, saving everyone from getting frozen to death.
  • Kill It with Ice: Part of Motato's Evil Plan to make sure that no one ever has a birthday ever again.
  • Pun:
Broccoli Mom: Corn Mom heard it with her own ear.
LarryBoy: [to Corn Mom] Is there a kernel of truth to this story?
  • Shout-Out: The "Hap-Hap-Happy Birthday" song that's been sung a couple of times in the episode sounds a little bit similar to that of "The Un-Birthday" song from Disney's Alice in Wonderland.
    • Also, the part with Jerry getting his tongue stuck on the lamppost, after Jimmy "double-dog dares" him into sticking his tongue on said lamppost is similar to when Flick was "triple-dog dared" into sticking his tongue on the flagpole during recess in A Christmas Story.
  • Tongue on the Flagpole: Happens to Jerry Gourd, after getting "double-dog dared" by Jimmy Gourd into sticking his tongue on a lamppost, when the cold wind from Motato's De-birthday-ficator blows up in the house.
  • Trail of Bread Crumbs: LarryBoy and Junior follow a trail of presents and cake that had been left behind by the machine that stole the birthdays, which ultimately leads them to Motato's lair.
  • Trojan Horse: LarryBoy and Junior both hide in gift boxes as part of a ploy to infiltrate Motato's lair and find out what's going on.
  • Villain Song: "My Unhappy Not-Birthday"
  • What Does This Button Do?: While trying to find a way to get out of the Larry-Cave, Bob pushes a button on the Larry Computer, which activates the hyper-recline action on the chair he is sitting on, causing the chair to catapult Bob all over the Larry-Cave.

Tropes found in Junior Gets a Pet:

  • All Animals Are Dogs: Robert the Buffalorange appears to act this way when around Junior.
  • Big "NO!": Junior gives off one of these, when trying to get Mike to not let Ichabeezer catch Robert the Buffalorange.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: We learn in this episode that Junior loves PBJHD, which stands for "Peanut Butter and Jelly Hot Dog". Of course, Robert the Buffalorange also loves it too.
  • Evil Poacher: Ichabeezer appears to take on this role when hunting down the Buffalorange. It's subverted afterwards when it turns out that he only caught the Buffalorange just so he could return it to its family again.
  • Impact Silhouette: Robert the Buffalorange does this twice in the episode, first at the beginning after having apparently crashed through the wall of Petunia's house, and the second time after breaking through the wall of Pa Grape's store.
  • Shout-Out: This episode appears to take a few plot elements from that of the Spongebob Squarepants episode "My Pretty Seahorse", and the Pokémon episode "Wings 'N' Things".
    • Also, the ending in which Robert is released back in the wild and reunited with his family again is a little similar to that of the ending of the Adventures of the Gummi Bears episode "Loopy, Go Home".
