Tropes

  • Catchphrase: Discussed by Alan's evil side, who keeps using nonsensical rhyming phrases in an attempt to find a good catchphrase.
  • Confessional: Alan goes to one to talk about scamming his family and friends out of money, although it quickly becomes clear that he's just looking for a way to be absolved of guilt without actually doing anything to atone for the wrongdoing. When the priest tells him that it doesn't work like that, and he has to give the money back to be forgiven, Alan decides to try his luck with a rabbi.
  • Conspicuous Consumption: Alan takes the money he got his family and friends to 'invest' in his business and buys a big screen 3D television that he installs in his chiropractic office to watch porn on.
  • Every Man Has His Price: Alan initially resists Rose's fifty thousand dollar bribe to keep quiet about her fake marriage to a mannequin, but when Berta says she needs her investment back early, he has no choice but to take it.
  • Long Game: Rose's multi-episode plan to make Charlie jealous by getting married (to a mannequin) and get him to realize that he actually loves her comes to fruition here, when he starts having an affair with her behind her husband's back. At the end of the episode, the two go for a weekend to Paris. We never find out how this would have ended.
  • Shout-Out: The episode title is one to That Darn Cat!
  • Status Quo Is God: Alan's Ponzi scheme ends, and he's broke again, but he's also off the hook for the whole scam thanks to Rose's bribe money, so everything is as it was before the whole scam started.
  • The Stool Pigeon: Discussed by Alan's evil side when Rose discovers Alan's scam, calling her a whistleblower.
