  • Abusive Parents: Frankie reveals that her husband died and ever since her in-laws have been trying to take Joanie away from her.
  • Almost Kiss: Alan and Frankie are about to kiss again when Charlie walks into the kitchen interrupting them.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Alan and Frankie share a kiss on the couch in front of the fireplace.
  • But Now I Must Go: Frankie, as she bids goodbye to Alan and leaves to Seattle with Joanie.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Frankie tells Alan and Charlie that she married a really rich guy and his parents always hated her.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Charlie for Frankie who is only interested in his brother Alan.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Charlie hates it when the woman who rejected him calls him "a great guy".
  • Epic Fail: Frankie commenting that the car she destroyed in the parking lot of the dentist office wasn't her perverted shrink's car.
  • Girl of the Week: Frankie for Alan.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Charlie grows quite jealous of Alan and Frankie's relationship. Because he wanted Frankie.
  • Innocent Awkward Question: The 8-year-old Joanie asks Alan and Charlie if they're gay. Cue chuckles from Frankie.
  • Likes Older Women: Implied. Jake tells his dad that he does like girls, he's just not into 8-year-olds like Joanie.
  • Love Triangle: Alan/Frankie/Charlie.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Joanie at first mistakes Alan and Charlie for a gay couple. Frankie finds it hilarious.
  • Noodle Incident: Frankie tells Alan and Charlie about her in-laws were even less happy when she and her late husband Brad used part of his trust fund to finance her recording career. Charlie asks if she was a singer and Frankie confirms it although it turned out she wasn't actually a good singer.
  • Operation: Jealousy: Charlie declines to join Alan, Frankie and their kids picnic as he couldn't find a date.
  • Puppy Love: Joanie crushes on Jake while Jake finds her annoying.
  • Romantic Runnerup: Charlie for Frankie. Unfortunately for him, she's crazy about his brother.
  • Sore Loser: Charlie is upset that for the first time in a long time a woman picked his brother Alan over him ayhe can't deal with it.
  • Stepford Smiler: Both Frankie and Alan talk about how at times they may seem like they have it all together but the unknown in life can be a little scary for them.
  • Suddenly Shouting: When Charlie jokes around with Alan too much, he gets up from the bed and screams "Mom!".
  • Unrequited Love Switcheroo: At the beginning Joanie is crushing on Jake and follows him everywhere. Jake finds it annoying. Only after she and her mother leave, does Jake admit he's crushing on her.
