Recap / Total Drama: "The Am-AH-Zon Race"

Go To

The contestants land in the Amazon rainforest. Reduced to a team of two, Lindsay and DJ finally win a challenge, and Team Amazon experience their first loss of the season.

Tropes:

  • Aborted Arc: Heather wanting revenge on Team Amazon for attempting to vote her off immediately fizzles out after this episode.
  • Air Quotes: Gwen remarks that a challenge in the Amazon Rainforest should be a lucky break for Team Amazon. Her team turns against her because teams that call themselves lucky always meet with disaster. When at a fork in the road some time later, Heather sarcastically suggests that Gwen decides which way to go because she's the one who feels "lucky", making air quotes as she speaks.
  • All Webbed Up: When Team CIRRRRH spends the night in the Amazon Rainforest, Alejandro lets giant caterpillars drag away Owen, whom he hates. Owen is cocooned and hung upside down, presumably to serve as food later on. Alejandro only comes back to save him because the challenge is unwinnable if the whole team isn't present.
  • Artistic License – Medicine: The Zing Zings, or really, the actors who play them, put a gold tooth in Heather's mouth with no trouble. In reality, the tooth would probably have been rejected immediately, and there was no root for the tooth to hold, so it would have fallen out anyway.
  • Bait-and-Switch: It looks like Gwen will be eliminated, as it was her decisions that resulted in the team losing. Instead, it would have been Heather who would have been thrown out of the game, but Chris reveals it was a non-elimination challenge.
  • Balloon Belly: Lindsay's belly grows a bump after she stuffs herself silly with bananas as a reward for a challenge that Team Victory won.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: Team Chris are attacked by large worms in the middle of the night.
  • Bland-Name Product: Cody's body spray is called "Saw", much like the real life brand "Axe".
  • Blowing a Raspberry: Heather taunts Gwen by forcing her to pick which way to go and threatening her elimination if she's wrong. Gwen returns the attack by noting that Heather's parents must love Total Drama just for the time Heather is away from them. Heather has nothing to that but to blow a raspberry at Gwen.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Tyler waves at Lindsay through the panels when we see him, Lindsay and Courtney talking over the walkie-talkies.
  • Buffy Speak: Tyler asks Chris where the t-bar is, describing it as the "hanging-on thingy part", "riding stick", "grabby whatchamacallit", and "zipper-buckle handle".
    Chris: Getting colder.
  • Call-Back: The zipline is one to the Action finale.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Cody, who gets Gwen to touch his butt (after forgetting which pocket his flashlight is in), and has himself a pair of x-ray glasses that can see through clothing. When Gwen has her Not So Above It All moment below and actually wears the x ray glasses, Cody has a big smile on his face when she realizes he is Going Commando.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: Cody moans about the fact that Sierra was the one to rescue him, not helped by the fact that she said immediately afterwards that she'll never leave him.
  • Confusion Fu: Cody briefly mistakes which pocket his flashlight is in, which results in Gwen accidentally stabbing herself in the hand with his epipen.
  • Deep Sleep: After spending a while under the influence of Cody's Epipen, Gwen completely crashes and spends most of the day completely asleep. The enormous dose of adrenaline quickly wears off and the ensuing burst of exhaustion causes her to fall asleep until the challenge ends, much like most anesthetics.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Before Chris reveals who Team Amazon voted for via television, he mocks Cody for his swollen thumb, asking if he would "give it a big fat thumbs up, making the latter scowl angrily at that joke.
  • Expressive Mask: The Peruvian Zing-Zings wear large wooden masks with a third eye way up above head height. For the most part, these masks are stiff, but whenever the Zing-Zings are seated at the campfire all three eyes gaze in whatever direction is of interest.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Alejandro gets one after being hit in the face by Owen in his sleep.
  • Going Commando: Cody is not wearing underwear, which horrifies Gwen when she uses his X-ray glasses. Cody believed that underwear was not needed in the Amazon, much to Gwen's horror.
  • "Good Luck" Gesture: After accidentally punching Alejandro in the face to the point he has to wear an eyepatch for a while, Owen is worried this will harm their friendship. He muses that it could still be okay if Alejandro likes getting punched in the face and crosses his fingers in hopes he does.
  • Hand Gagging: Gwen earns Team Amazon's disapproval when she notes that a challenge in the Amazon Rainforest should be a lucky break for them. There's a trend of teams losing if they say they're going to win, so Gwen might have just jinxed the team. As she stammers out a defense, Sierra puts her hand over Gwen's mouth to get her to just stop.
  • Heroic BSoD: Sierra goes into one after it was revealed that Cody voted her off. This was after she sucked out enough poison to get Cody treated for his allergy.
  • Idiot Ball: Giving Cody back his EpiPen after he made an innuendo joke at Gwen's expense proves to be a really bad decision by Gwen, especially given that Chris said one of the teammates had to hold it. They promptly lose the challenge because of this decision.
  • Improvised Zipline: An interesting case, where the zipline itself is fine, but there's only one T-bar that's available, which is used by Team Victory. The true improvisation comes from what Team Chris use as substitutes for the unavailable T-bar. Alejandro uses his belt, Owen uses his hands, Tyler uses his pants, and Izzy uses a backpack (with Noah stuffed into it). When on the zipline to cross the river, Owen and Tyler use their hands and pants respectively, which ends with said hands and pants burning and sending them into the Amazon River.
  • Intoxication Ensues: Gwen, after accidentally stabbing herself with Cody's EpiPen.
  • It Amused Me: The sole reason why Chris showed everyone on Team Amazon who they voted for, and then made it a non-elimination round.
  • It's All About Me: Heather easily could have made the Zing Zings untie them and the team could still have come at least in second place, but because she enjoyed being seen as a god, the team still lost the challenge.
  • Karma Houdini: Heather is directly responsible for her team losing, as her vanity led to her refusing Courtney's extremely understandable demand for her to make the Zing Zings untie them, except Heather thinks it is Gwen's fault in the first place. Heather is nearly voted off for causing the team to lose, only for Chris to reveal it is not an elimination challenge.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: The Zing-zings invoke this as part of their act.
  • Maniac Monkeys: The monkeys that DJ smacked become this after waking up (only to DJ though).
  • Never My Fault: After Team Amazon officially loses, Heather places blame on Gwen, for Tempting Fate earlier and choosing which path they went down. However, they ended up staying in one place for a majority of the challenge even after the Zing-Zings untied Heather and treat her their goddess, under the flimsy excuse that if she ordered them to release everyone they might get mad and demand a human sacrifice. It is even revealed later that the "Zing-Zings" are actually actors and the team was never in any danger of them, but Heather still blames Gwen.
  • Not So Above It All: When Heather suggests that Gwen uses Cody's X-ray glasses to see the color of his underwear, Gwen goes along with it. Unfortunately, Cody is Going Commando, and Gwen is horrified by what she sees.
  • Over-the-Shoulder Carry: After rescuing Cody from a giant mosquito in the Amazon Rainforest, she declares that she's the only one he can truly rely on and throws him over her shoulder to rejoin their team.
  • Piranha Problem: Truth in Television, the Amazon River is teeming with piranhas that attack Tyler and Owen when they fall into the water.
  • Plot Allergy: Cody brings up his deadly allergies that can send him into anaphylactic shock. Chris acknowledges the particular danger a trek through the Amazon Rainforest poses for him by handing Gwen an epipen to use if necessary. This is despite Sierra's insistence she gets to hold onto the epipen, which she supports by listing all of Cody's allergies: black ants, brown ants, red ants, bejo beads, wolf spiders, katydid crickets, the clear-winged Cithaerias pireta butterfly, and goat saliva. Some time later, he gets bitten by a red ant after his epipen has gone to waste. Sierra saves him by sucking out the poison.
  • Poor Communication Kills: By the time they get the radio working, Gwen has been reduced to unintelligible babbling due to accidentally using Cody's EpiPen. This results in Chris almost abandoning them, until Heather tells him about the situation.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the Reality Show The Amazing Race.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Heather explicitly declares "HELP! US! NOW!" when she explains their situation to Chris over the radio after Gwen's unintelligible babbling almost caused Chris to leave them to die.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Team Victory's only win of the season pretty much ends up being rendered useless by the fact that the episode turns out to be a non-elimination.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Chris's mentions "The Slap Heard Around the World" .
    • Chef uses Team Amazon's batteries to play Pac-Man.
    • The intro of "Gypsy Rap" is similar to the intro of the song "Encuentro con salvajes".
    • The Zing-Zings believing that Heather was a goddess could be a reference to the Ewoks thinking that C-3PO was their god in Return of the Jedi.
    • The golden treasure that Lindsay finds to win the challenge resembles the golden idol from the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
    • The way Machu Picchu collapses is similar to how the hidden city collapsed at the end of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
    • Chef reveals that the two Zing-Zings that captured Team Amazon are actually Peruvian actors who were practicing for a local "Shakespeare in the Jungle" production of Macbeth.
  • Stimulant Speedtalk: Gwen tries to retrieve Cody's EpiPen and accidentally gets the needle stuck in her hand. He reassures her that it'll just be like a big shot of adrenaline, but she spends the rest of the episode with her eyes bugging out and rambling incoherently.
  • Suck Out the Poison: After wasting his epipen, Cody gets bitten in his thumb by a red ant. To save him, Sierra sucks the allergen out and is successful enough that all Cody gets to suffer from is a swollen hand.
  • Tempting Fate: When hearing that they are going to the Amazons, Gwen said that their team (Team Amazon) will win. This episode will mark Team Amazon's first loss in this game. It is also lampshaded by Sierra and Chris before the challenge even started.
  • Twitchy Eye: Gwen gets stung with Cody's epipen and becomes overall disheveled and twitchy, which includes the occasional eye twitch.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Even after Heather could have ordered the Zing Zings to untie them, she still chooses not to because of her own ego, meaning Team Amazon still lost the challenge.
