Recap / Total Drama: "Hide and Be Sneaky"

Go To

The campers play a game of hide and seek with Chef, while Duncan forms a guys alliance with Geoff, DJ and Owen.

Tropes:

  • Actually a Good Idea: Leshawna hides in the water, not far from home base. This is the only place that Chef forgets to look, and she wins because of it.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Did Geoff lie about not voting for Bridgette to save his relationship with her and therefore the votes were 4 for Bridgette and 3 for Duncan and Owen each? Or was he being honest, meaning he likely wasted his vote on an immune Heather (as he suggested voting her off during his alliance meeting) and someone else voted for Bridgette instead? If so, was it Izzy, who was shown being hesitant about voting for Owen? And if so, was it just because of Bridgette's smell?
  • Answer Cut: This confessional exchange between Heather and Lindsay:
Lindsay: I think she [Heather] really respects my strategical ideas.
    (cut to Heather)
Heather: I've got flip-flops that have more brains than her.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Chris asks Chef to demonstrate his water gun, it looks as if he's going to demonstrate on Duncan … only to turn towards Chris and force him back with the full force of the water several meters away from where he was standing.
Chris: (angrily) NOT ON ME, DUDE!!!
  • Behind a Stick: Lindsay's first hiding spot is behind a thin tree. She has her arms stretched to look like branches, but all the same the tree should be too thin by a quarter for her head, chest, and hips. Yet it isn't, which is blatant when Lindsay leaves her hiding spot to join Heather in the main lodge.
  • "Be Quiet!" Nudge: Heather nudges Lindsay hard enough to knock her down to the floor when she acknowledges to Izzy that if she joins their alliance, Heather will drop her like a hot potato the second she's no longer needed.
  • Bring It: Izzy and Chef get into hand-to-hand combat. Midway, Chef gains the upper hand and forces Izzy back. He thinks he's beaten her, but she recovers, takes a fighting stance, and motions with her full hand for Chef to continue. This time, Izzy does better, though still doesn't win.
  • By the Lights of Their Eyes: Gwen, while hiding under a patch of grass.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: Owen breaks down and reveals the guys' alliance to Gwen... who wasn't even remotely suspicious or aware of its existence.
  • Cat Fight: DJ and Owen have to wait for the girls to finish up in the communal bathrooms before they can go. They hear a fight break out between Heather and Leshawna over a stunt Heather pulls on Gwen and at first it has all the hallmarks of cat fight. Heather tells Leshawna to get off of her, the violence is clearly limited to wrestling and slapping, and with the reason behind the fight being minimal, the two guys have no qualms being entertained by it. Then the sounds off glass breaking, wood cracking, and objects being thrown join the sonoric chaos and DJ and Owen decide to leave before anyone can declare them witnesses.
  • Clothing Damage: Between the last episode and this one, Leshawna shredded Heather's clothes as revenge for her trying to break up Gwen and Trent last episode, as well as getting Trent unfairly eliminated and breaking Gwen's heart.
  • Coconut Meets Cranium: A squirrel goes down for the count when an acorn drops on its head. The acorn was (presumably) shaken loose from the tree (which is an evergreen) because Geoff climbed into it to use as a hiding spot.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: Heather tries to get Izzy to support her in the vote by saying they'll be best friends.
Leshawna: [to Izzy] You know she'll just dump you after the vote.
Lindsay: [focused on her nails] It's true. She will.
  • Dirty Coward: Heather attempts to sacrifice Lindsay to save her own behind. However, Chef ultimately catches both girls before they could reach the safe zone.
  • Dumbass Has a Point:
    • Heather is mad because Leshawna shredded her clothes, but Lindsay points out Leshawna did it because she stole Gwen's boyfriend. She's absolutely right.
    • When Heather and Lindsay catch DJ and Owen for Chef, Lindsay suggests that she and Heather each take one boy for the both of them to get immunity. However, Heather harshly and greedily dismisses that idea.
  • Enemy Mine: Duncan pushes for a guys' alliance out of concern the girls will pick them off one by one. When DJ points out how the girls are frequently divided, Duncan expresses certainty that they'll put their differences aside in the face of a common enemy. He's almost proven right when the girls find out about their alliance, but their disagreements again flare up.
  • Foreshadowing: In the confessional, Heather states that once Lindsay is no longer useful to her, she'll dump her. Heather does exactly that in the following episode.
  • Friend Versus Lover: Geoff is torn between his love for Bridgette and his kinship with the guys.
  • Genre Savvy: Duncan insists that girls (even ones at odds) will stick together when push comes to shove.
Duncan: Haven't you ever seen a chick flick before?
  • Groin Attack: Owen "lands on his keys" after falling through the roof that he was hiding on top of with DJ.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: Gwen covers herself with a grassy camouflage in order to hide. This would have worked if she wasn't in the middle of an open field, and Chef steps on her, causing her to reveal herself.
  • High-Altitude Interrogation: How Duncan forces Owen into the alliance. Only for it to be a small ledge barely 2 metres in height.
  • Hope Spot: When Bridgette is caught, she begs Chef to spray her with the water gun since she's just been attacked by skunks. After he drenches her, the stink vapors briefly vanish, but then come back.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: After all the abuse and mistreatment from Heather, Lindsay just now starts to think that Heather is not that nice, but she still considers her to be her BFF in the competition.
  • Kick the Dog: Heather abuses Lindsay several times throughout this episode...
    • At the beginning, Lindsay was ecstatic about drinking a bottle of grape pop that Heather had in her gift basket from the last episode. When Heather is angry over Leshawna shredding her clothes, Lindsay mentions that she did steal Gwen's boyfriend; in retaliation, Heather snatches the pop bottle out of Lindsay's hand, takes a swig of it, spitting the pop out, and throws the bottle away, exclaiming how can Lindsay "drink [that] sugar water".
    • Before getting captured, Heather yells at Lindsay to find her own hiding spot, nearly causing Lindsay to cry. When Chef catches both girls in his kitchen, Heather shoves Lindsay into Chef to save her own skin.
    • After finding DJ and Owen, Lindsay suggests to Heather that they share credit so both can have invincibility, and Heather callously tells Lindsay to find her own victim.
    • Heather gives Lindsay a "Be Quiet!" Nudge to the point of knocking the latter over as well as her nail polish. Only then does Lindsay start to doubt her alliance with Heather.
  • Knuckle Cracking: As Izzy and Chef Hatchet prepare to fight, first Chef cracks his knuckles merely by making a fist, then Izzy does the same and one-ups Chef by cracking her neck while she's at it.
  • Late to the Realization: When Heather nudges her to shut up, Lindsay spills her limited edition nail polish. In the confessional, Lindsay says she's starting to think that Heather (the girl who keeps bossing her around and once threatened to shave her head) is not a nice person.
  • Mindless Sheep: In the confessional, Heather makes her opinion of Lindsay's intelligence clear.
Heather: Who cares about friends? In this world, there are shepherds, and there are sheep. And Lindsay is a major sheep. (holds up her fingers near her head like sheep horns) Baaaaaaaah!
  • Offhand Backhand: While Gwen is showering, Heather and Leshawna are doing their makeup. Heather turns on the hot water to leave Gwen in the cold. Leshawna continues with her mascara until Heather drops her defense, at which point she smacks her free arm to the side into Heather's face without taking her eyes off the mirror. Heather goes down, but also gets back and a fight ensues that escalates rapidly.
  • Oh, Crap!: As Izzy attempts to slide towards the lifeguard's chair, she realizes that she's going too fast and fails to stop in time, falling off the dock.
  • Plot Hole:
    • Since Geoff didn't vote for Bridgette, wouldn't that have resulted in a tie between her and Duncan since both ended up with the same number of votes against them (Gwen, Leshawna, and Bridgette voted for Duncan while he, DJ, and Owen voted for Bridgette)?
    • While it is known that Heather & Lindsay voted for Owen, it's never specified as to who Izzy voted for.
      • A likely explanation for both is that Izzy voted for Bridgette instead of Owen. However, it's never specified why she chose to do so instead of allying with the other girls' alliance against Duncan.
  • Potty Emergency: Owen and DJ were outside the washrooms trying to hold it in while this was happening.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on the game "hide and seek".
  • Pushed at the Monster: Heather pushes Lindsay in front of Chef to try and save herself.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Izzy and Chef enter combat with a rapid exchange of punches, chops, and blocks. Chef gets the upper hand when he gets a punch through, but when they again get into rapid-fire fisticuffs, it's Izzy who finds the opening to jump up and kick Chef in the face to make her escape.
  • Reed Snorkel: The challenge is to hide from Chef or reach home base before he catches you. Leshawna hides in the water just below the docks and keeps herself out of sight by breathing through a green reed snorkel complete with lily pad for camouflage. The strategy works and leaves Leshawna the only person to evade Chef.
  • Revenge: Leshawna vows to do this to Heather when consoling Gwen after Trent's elimination.
  • Secret-Keeper: Izzy finds Leshawna in her hiding place after she falls off the dock, but she doesn't reveal Leshawna's hiding place to Chef.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Chef and Izzy's fistfight is a reference to a scene from The Matrix where Neo and Agent Smith engage each other, especially the slow-motion segments, the way Izzy wipes her mouth with the back of her hand, and Izzy's "bring it on" gesture.
    • Heather tells Gwen that she is looking "fetch as always".
  • Smelly Skunk: While trying to find a hiding spot near the campfire pit, Bridgette unwittingly gets her ankle tangled in a string of outdoor lights. In her hiding spot, Bridgette discovers a family of skunks and tries to slowly back away; however, as she's walking, the string of lights pulls down on one of its support poles and causes a barrel to crash on the ground, starling the skunks, which spray Bridgette. Not long after she screams in horror, Bridgette is caught by Chef, who says he doesn't have to spray her, but she begs for him to do so. Chef complies, and the stink goes away...for a moment.
  • Symbolic Blood: Lindsay makes a negative comment about Heather, and Heather shoves her to the floor for it. Because Lindsay was doing her nails, her bottle of limited edition ruby red nail polish tips over too. It spills out over the carpet in a puddle way larger than the size of the bottle justifies to humorously signify Lindsay's loss.
  • Team Hand-Stack: The Guys' Alliance performs a team hand-stack twice. The first time is to make the alliance official and the second time is to signify their agreement to vote off Bridgette.
  • Unwilling Suspension: Geoff goes against the Guys' Alliance as enforced by Duncan by not voting for Bridgette to leave that night. She gets eliminated anyway and, not wanting to lose her, Geoff yells after her that he didn't vote her off. It saves his relationship, but it draws Duncan's ire. When it's time to sleep, he ties Geoff up in his sleeping bag and drags him outside to spend the night dangling upside-down from a tree.
  • Visible Odor: Poor Bridgette gives off green stink vapors when sprayed by a family of skunks.
  • Waif-Fu: Izzy being able to go toe-to-toe with Chef in a fistfight, despite Izzy being a slim teenage girl and Chef being a huge muscular adult man.
  • Worthy Opponent: Chef finds Leshawna to be this after she outsmarted him by hiding in the water and reaching home base, giving an approving nod after everybody rushes to congratulate her.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Heather says that she will dump Lindsay when she finds her to be not useful anymore. She does just that in the next episode.

Lindsay

Lindsay is aware that Heather is a cruel person, but is too dumb to realize that Heather hates her, and only keeps her around as a useful pawn.
