Recap / Total Drama: "Greece's Pieces"

Go To

The next destination for the Total Drama plane is the birthplace of the Olympics, Ancient Ro- er, Greece! After a series of Olympic-style challenges, Tyler reveals his secret to Courtney, ruining her friendship with Gwen and relationship with Duncan. All part of Alejandro's plan...

Tropes:

  • Always Second Best: Owen lampshades Canada's reputation of getting silver medals in the Olympics at the beginning of the episode.
  • Ancient Grome: Chris initially thought that the Olympics originated in Rome, due to his intern’s shoddy research. Because of this, many of the props in the challenge are Roman-inspired.
  • And This Is for...: During the pankration challenge, Owen effortlessly sends Cody flying. When it's her turn, Sierra attacks Owen while shouting this.
  • Bad Boss: Chris throws his interns out of the plane after their incompetence gets on his nerves by the end of the episode.
Chris McLean: Everyone should probably hang on to something... everyone except you!
(throws the intern on his left off the plane)
  • Batman Gambit: Alejandro realizes that Duncan and Gwen are in a relationship and realizes that Tyler saw the two kiss. When Tyler and Cody are going to be put in a tiebreaker, Alejandro decides to expose the relationship, believing that Cody, under orders from Courtney, wont do a thing. Courtney reacts exactly as he gambled, but Cody still wins the challenge.
  • Bears Are Bad News: Duncan and Gwen are forced to get a gold medal from a bear dressed as a Erymanthian Boar. Said "dress" is simply boar tusks taped to the sides of its mouth.
  • Berserk Button: Courtney learns this the hard way from Sierra when she calls Cody "pipsqueak".
  • Big "WHAT?!": Courtney when she hears Tyler saying what Gwen and Duncan did.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: Tyler admits that he's not very good at keeping secrets. He is quickly pressured into revealing it by Alejandro.
  • Cloth Fu: To make up for half a season's worth of singing, Chris requires Duncan to sing everything he says. Chef is tasked with enforcing this, and he hits Duncan with a towel snap every time he fails.
  • Control Freak: Courtney seems to have learned nothing after her and Duncan's experience in Action's "Top Dog". This time, she has created a chart of 47 things she wants Duncan to correct, in order to make him the perfect boyfriend.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Courtney upon learning her best friend and boyfriend have been cheating on her.
  • Everyone Can See It: Sierra knew full well that Gwen and Duncan were into each other.
  • Facepalm: Sierra and Courtney are doing great fighting Owen and Tyler for the challenge. However, when Cody returns, Courtney calls him a pipsqueak, which prompts Sierra to let go of Owen and attack her teammate. As the fight goes from an assured victory to an embarrassing loss, Heather smacks her hand against her forehead.
  • Freudian Slip: Chris says Duncan will join the rest of the group, assuming he's still alive. Gwen expresses deep concern about this, prompting Courtney's suspicion.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Courtney as usual, though in this case, her jealousy is warranted.
  • "Hell, Yes!" Moment: Owen over winning a gold medal.
  • Hope Spot: Courtney got subject to a particular brutal one. For all of Action, and the first third of World Tour, Courtney believed that Gwen and Duncan were involved romantically. Just as she finally accepted their repeated claims that nothing romantic happened between them, they begin to get involved romantically anyway, utterly validating her earlier suspicions.
  • Humiliation Conga: Duncan is put through the wringer for the first challenge, is required to sing instead of speak for the duration of this trip (to the point of Chris telling Gwen she's not obligated to sing during the official song), whipped with a towel by Chef any time he fails to sing, and gets knocked out by Cody, of all people. His only upshot is being spared from elimination, though that's only because Chris is enjoying watching Duncan on a team that mostly hates him.
  • Hypocrite: When Sierra attacks Courtney for insulting Cody and the two girls are in a headlock with each other, Courtney tells her they’re on the same team. Cody, who’s on their team, tries to get the girls to stop, but Courtney backhands him for trying to interrupt.
  • Implied Death Threat: Duncan’s response to Tyler walking in on him and Gwen kissing.
Duncan: (waking up from a nap) Oh, wow that was a deep sleep; the sleep of the dead. Haha, you know what I mean, Tyler? Dead.
  • I Warned You: Chris warns Duncan that he will be subjected to a lash from a towel anytime he fails to sing. Duncan scoffs at what seems like a light punishment (especially for this show), until Chris has Chef give him a demonstration. He then reminds Duncan that the rule applies even when screaming in pain, hence another lash.
  • In-Universe Factoid Failure: Chris thinks that the Olympics started in Rome, and that Mount Olympus isn't a real place, which several contestants correct him on.
  • It Amused Me: Why Chris keeps Duncan on the show and ignores the votes, as he wants to keep the fun going.
  • Laser-Guided Karma; Courtney is entirely nasty to Cody all episode. Naturally, when she asks him to throw the challenge to take out Gwen, he silently refuses and wins it handily.
  • Let Me at Him!: Once Courtney learns that Duncan, who's not present at the time, cheated on her with Gwen, she turns to her teammate and prepares to do her bodily harm. Sierra keeps a hold on Courtney, even lifting her from the ground at one point, to prevent things getting out of hand.
  • Let's Duet: The episode's song is a duet between Gwen and Duncan.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Gwen is horrified at herself for kissing Duncan behind Courtney's back, and feels repeatedly torn throughout the episode over her own feelings for Duncan, and her desire to be honest with Courtney. She even tries to convince Duncan to confess to Courtney during the song they sing. Unfortunately for Gwen, Tyler reveals the truth to Courtney before she and Duncan can tell her, and Courtney is irate.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Subverted. When Chris mentions that the Greeks did the Olympics naked as a fun fact, Owen, with little hesitation begins taking his clothes off, only for Chris to backtrack and say they won't be doing that.
  • Offhand Backhand:
    • Cody is upset when he learns that Duncan, a bully already in a relationship with Courtney, has been cheating with Gwen, the girl Cody's been crushing on since meeting her. Duncan is unaware the cheating has been made public when he comes up from behind to insult Cody over his outfit. Entirely done at this point, Cody doesn't even look at him when he socks him in the jaw.
    • Despite half the team's wish to lose the challenge so they can vote Gwen off for her cheating with Duncan, Cody nets Team Amazon victory. Gwen softly cheers, prompting Courtney, the victim of the cheating and who's standing right before her, to smack her hand backwards into Gwen's face. Not only does she not turn around for it, she even closes her eyes while she swings her arm.
  • Pet the Dog: Heather does her level best to console Courtney after such an emotional day for her, promising to help her through this.
  • Poorly Timed Confession: Alejandro invokes Tyler into doing this during the competition to create a rift between Gwen and Courtney. Before the tie breaker match can begin, when Tyler reveals the kiss to everyone, Courtney became furious at Gwen.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the candy Reese's Pieces.
  • Properly Paranoid:
    • Courtney becomes increasingly suspicious about Duncan and Gwen when the two start giving subconscious signals. Her paranoia was completely justified when she learns the truth.
    • Though unaware of how much Alejandro truly loathes him, Owen does see how tight he and Tyler have become. Since they booted Noah (his biggest ally) off in the last episode, Owen worries about being next and works harder to win a challenge (which he does) to earn his keep.
    • Gwen fully expects Duncan to be eliminated. His team actually did vote to do so, but he's spared by Chris wanting to have some more fun.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Courtney's line "YOU! ARE! SO! ELI-MI-NA-TED!" upon learning of Duncan and Gwen's relationship uttered at Gwen.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Cody is pretty hurt when he learns about her and Duncan's relationship. The last straw is when Duncan, unaware the relationship is exposed, insults his costume, and out of patience, Cody slugs him in the face.
  • Rapid-Fire "No!": Chris enhances his challenge introduction speech with the fun fact that the ancient Olympians competed in the nude. Owen interprets the fun fact as an order to be authentic and prepares to undress. Chris quickly utters "No!" thrice while holding up his hands protectively, then clears up the misunderstanding.
  • Secret-Keeper: Tyler is the only one who knows about Duncan and Gwen's kiss until Alejandro pressures him into revealing what was bothering him at the end of the episode.
  • Tempting Fate: After hitting the grab during the tiebreaker, Tyler remarks that he's not hurt for once. Cody immediately falls on him.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After Courtney tells Cody to lose so that Gwen can be eliminated, Heather and Sierra agree to vote her off. Though hurt by the big reveal, Cody is moved by Gwen tearing up and resolves to win the challenge.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Cody when he knocks Duncan out with one punch.
  • Tranquil Fury: Unlike Courtney, Cody is pretty livid that Gwen and Duncan are together, though this is more out of the fact that Gwen has a boyfriend now rather than due to cheating. When Duncan finally pushes him over the edge, Cody just slugs him without a hint of emotion.
  • Undying Loyalty: Despite Cody being angry that Gwen and Duncan are now together, when Courtney tells him to throw the challenge, he still pulls through to win it for Gwen's sake and spare her from being eliminated.
  • Unwanted Rescue: Cody does an unsuccessful version of this during the tag team wrestling match. Courtney, Sierra, and Cody are pitted against Tyler and Owen. Cody is knocked out of the ring in the first few seconds of the fight, but the girls do well. Right as they're about to win, Cody returns to the ring declaring, "Never fear, ladies, I'm here to save you!" which manages to tick Courtney off and make her yell at him, which in turn causes Sierra to halt her assault on Owen and switch to beating up Courtney instead. A Double Knockout ensues, and Owen ends up winning the round by default.
  • We Need a Distraction: Ahead of the tiebreaker, Owen says they need an edge. This is when Alejandro gets Tyler to reveal the secret, describing it as a much needed distraction to tip the scales.
  • Wham Episode: Tyler reveals that Duncan and Gwen kissed, destroying Gwen's budding friendship with Courtney and any chance Team Amazon has at working together for the foreseeable future.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: During the pankration challenge, Tyler loses to Courtney because of this.
  • Wrong Assumption: After observing assorted tension, Alejandro speculates in the confessional that it's Gwen and Tyler who are dating, with Duncan being some kind of complication. He then lampshades how he's needlessly jumping to conclusions and says it's best to wait for more details.
  • You Owe Me: For the pankration challenge, Tyler really wants to participate, so Alejandro offers his spot in exchange for a favor to be named later. He later reminds Tyler of this during the tiebreaker.
