Recap / The Wonder Years S 02 E 17 How Im Spending My Summer Vacation

Go To

On the last day of school, Kevin learns that Miss White will be getting married during the summer and will soon be known as Mrs. Heimer, while Paul announces that, starting the next day and lasting until the first day of school, his family will be out of town. When Kevin and Winnie sign each other's yearbooks, Kevin imagines Winnie writing a great message for him and decides to also write a real thoughtful message, taking up half a page, only to be embarrassed when he sees that all Winnie wrote was "have a great summer". At home, Kevin complains that he has nothing to do, so Jack makes him clean out the garage. Winnie approaches Kevin, and learns that Kevin does not plan to go to her family's annual summer cook-out... Until she kisses him.

However, Kevin gets annoyed at the party, as whenever he tries to talk to Winnie, one of her parents tells her to take something to the other parent. Soon, Kevin asks Winnie what her deal is, pointing out that for the last year she's been inconsistent regarding whether she likes him or not. It is then that Winnie reveals that her parents, in the midst of their grief over losing Brian, are getting a divorce and she'll be spending the summer out of town with her mother.

Kevin later recalls that the summer was pretty uneventful. He cleaned the garage and mowed the neighbor's lawn. He went fishing with his dad. He watched a man walk on the moon. He considered himself pretty lucky.

Includes examples of

  • Grief-Induced Split: Winnie's parents are revealed to be divorcing in the wake of her brother's death.
  • "Last Day of School" Plot: It's the last day of school, where Kevin discovers everyone else has more eventful (though not necessarily better) summer plans than him.
  • Oh, Crap!: Kevin just happens to complain about having nothing to do at the very moment that Jack, who has been cleaning out the garage, walks in, asking what he said (which Wayne tells him), and puts Kevin to work.
