Recap / The Wonder Years S 02 E 11 Nemesis

Go To

Kevin enjoys spending time with Winnie, but at the same time is also nervous about her friendship with Becky Slater, who didn't take Kevin's break-up with her very well. While walking home with Winnie after school, he notices that she doesn't seem interested in him, thinking Becky had told her something to turn her against him, but it turns out that she has the flu. While Winnie is sick, Kevin visits her after school each day, taking care of her. One day at the end of school, Kevin talks with Becky Slater, hoping to put their past behind them. Thinking she had, Kevin is then approached by his friends, who are all mad that Kevin had said some unflattering things about them behind their backs - things he joked about to Becky when they were in a relationship. Kevin then remembers that he also made fun of Winnie, and that Becky said she was going to visit Winnie. Kevin arrives at Winnie's house after Becky had visited, and she's mad at Kevin for what he said to Becky about everyone behind their backs - only to learn that Becky did not tell Winnie what he said about her. When confronting Becky about it, Becky says that the reason she didn't tell Winnie is because she's her friend and wouldn't want to hurt her like that, but then reveals that, only to list all the people who she DID tell about it. Kevin ends up getting sick during this. A much-better Winnie comes to visit a sick Kevin, but as soon as Norma leaves the room, she angrily mocks Kevin while also being rough with him, having found out what Kevin had said about her.

Includes examples of

  • Bait-and-Switch: When Kevin gets to Winnie's house after Becky's visit and thinks Becky told her what he had said about her, Winnie is mad over what he's been saying... But it turns out she just doesn't approve of what he said about their friends, unaware that he'd also said unflattering stuff about her.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Becky Slater laughed her ass off at Kevin's mean comments and imitation of their friends while they were dating, but after they broke up she told everyone what he said just to hurt Kevin, oblivious to how much it could hurt said friends. She also claims she would never hurt her friend Winnie by telling her what Kevin said about her, but that doesn't stop her from telling Kirk and Paul and Carla and half the school, knowing full well that it will eventually get back to Winnie.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Winnie finds out what Kevin had said about her and is very angry with him about it, but future Kevin determines that this could have only meant one thing: she wanted him big time. His friendship with his other friends, particularly Paul, is also under some strain.
  • Chekhov's Classroom: Kevin's English class just so happens to be discussing the Woman Scorned figure in literature. And of course, in Becky's opinion, a woman seeking revenge is perfectly normal.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Among those Kevin had said unflattering things about behind their backs that Becky told was the bus driver. When Kevin gets on the bus, in part to escape everyone's anger, the bus driver says "I drive like an old woman?" and then refuses to let him on the bus. This is not one of Kevin's peers, but an adult being upset at one of the students.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Although Becky was so mad at Kevin that she told everyone else about the things Kevin said about them behind their backs, she did not tell Winnie, due to their close friendship. However, that didn't stop her from telling other people about that. She also tells Kevin she would probably stop seeking revenge on him if he'd gotten really ill.
  • Fan Disservice: While Winnie mocks Kevin, she rips the covers off his bed, revealing him to be wearing nothing but a t-shirt and tighty whities.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: As revenge for breaking up, Becky tells everybody (except for Winnie) the mean things Kevin jokingly said about them behind their backs while Kevin and Becky had been dating. When Kevin and Becky have a showdown, she points out that she didn't say anything that wasn't true.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Kevin, when he realizes just how many people he made fun of.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Despite how much Kevin took care of Winnie while she was sick, once Winnie finds out what Kevin had been saying about her behind her back, she gets really mad at him and chews him out worse than the others do (and while Kevin himself is sick in bed). Perhaps justified in that she's a teenage girl and would likely ignore what good Kevin had done for her if mad enough.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Kevin gets it from both Paul and Winnie in retaliation for talking behind their backs. The one from Paul (which Kevin actually, to some extent, asked for in an attempt to fix things between them) was bad enough, but the one from Winnie was particularly scathing.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: Kevin's confrontation with Becky near the end of the episode is full of these.
Kevin: What do you want me to say? Does it make you feel better making my life miserable?
    Becky: Yes. It does.
Kevin: (beat) So... what are you gonna do? Go around and make everyone hate me forever?
Becky: No... if you got some horrible disease... or got into a really bad accident... I'd probably stop.
Adult Kevin: Oh good, something to look forward to.
    Later
Becky: What kind of person do you think I am?!
Adult Kevin:: A vengeful harpy, driven by mad fits of jealous rage.
  • Woman Scorned: A Discussed Trope in class when the teacher asks the students what they think of the portrayal of women as vengeful. Becky of course says that seeking revenge is a perfectly natural thing to do.
