Season 6, Episode 13

Carol and Maggie must find a way to escape when they're captured by a brigade of Saviors.

  • Amazon Brigade: The Saviors holding Carol and Maggie hostage are all female fighters, except for a single injured male named Donnie.
  • And Then John Was a Zombie: Donnie and Paula become walkers after their deaths, but both end up killed.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Carol laments Paula's decision to stay and fight instead of running when she was given the chance.
  • Arc Words: "We are all Negan."
    • Also for Carol: "What are you so scared of?"
  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: Carol makes a brilliant performance to convince the Saviors that she's not a threat.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Carol played the role of a nice, meek, and weak woman, just to bait the Saviors into ignoring her. When they did, she freed herself and Maggie and then they escaped, but not before killing the remaining Saviors AND their reinforcements.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Paula does have some badass cred to her, but she is not as superior as she believes.
  • Boom, Headshot!: How Chelle and Primo are killed.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Paula REALLY shouldn't have messed with Carol.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Carol walks in a very particular way when her hood is thrown over her head, and the shot shows only her feet. She's leaving tracks for Daryl, who, when they find them, says, "We found your trail."
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The Saviors led by Bud, who were blown up by Daryl in "No Way Out," are referenced, first by Carol, and then by Chelle and Molly.
    • Maggie mentions death in childbirth, clearly remembering Lori's fate in "Killer Within."
    • Carol employs her Stepford wife persona that she used when she first came to Alexandria during the second and first halves of Seasons 5 and 6 respectively.
    • Carol mentions her "husband Ed" when trying to draw parallels between herself and Paula (after Donnie struck the latter).
  • Damsel out of Distress: Carol and Maggie escape their captors and kill them all.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Carol and Maggie.
  • Dramatic Irony: Paula spends the majority of the episode believing Carol is weak.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Chelle tells Molly to stop smoking around Maggie when she learns she's pregnant. She was also horrified when she reflexively slashes Maggie's stomach.
  • Facial Horror: Paula gets half her face ripped off by a zombie.
  • Faux Action Girl: Chelle and Molly end up easily dispatched by Carol and Maggie.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Paula ends up impaled by a rebar and devoured by a single walker.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Molly suffers from this due to her smoking and it gives her a cavalier attitude about continuing to do so.
  • Karmic Death: The Saviors who relentlessly bullied Maggie and Carol throughout the episode end up getting brutally killed by their hostages.
  • Kick the Dog: Donnie literally kicks Carol while she's down on the ground and tied up.
  • Kill It with Fire: How the Saviors' reinforcements got disposed of.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Done by Carol, Paula, and especially Maggie.
  • The Load: Donnie, who was shot and is slowly bleeding to death from his gunshot wound.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Carol hid her true intentions and feigned spinelessness to make their captors underestimate her. It works and she's able to break herself and Maggie free at the first opportunity.
  • The One Guy: Donnie is the only male member of Paula's group of Saviors.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Chelle prevents Molly from smoking around Maggie when she learns about her pregnancy.
    • Molly offers Carol a cigarette.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Courtesy of Rick Grimes, Primo chose his words wrong, and a headshot ensued.
Rick: I'm sorry it had to come to this.
  • Pummeling the Corpse: Maggie does this to Molly's dead body.
  • Red Shirt: The Savior reinforcements that are killed by Carol and Maggie die as soon as they appear and get no characterization.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Paula's reaction when confronting Carol in the last scene.
  • Smug Snake: The Saviors practically Badass Boast all the time.
  • Tempting Fate: Chelle telling Maggie that she won't die today. Guess what happens to her.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Molly's death. Maggie infects her with a walker then proceeds to beat her head into nothing but mush.
  • Title Drop: Said by Molly, who states her illness makes her as doomed as Carol and Maggie and that this puts them in "the same boat."
  • Underestimating Badassery: The Saviors immediately assume that Carol and Maggie are pushovers.
  • Villain Ball: Paula attempts to strike fear in Rick's group by making them wait until the hostage trade for hours. However, she completely disregards her ally Donnie bleeding out from his wounds and refuses to get him medical attention, a choice that causes Donnie's death. When he reanimates, Maggie turns him into a booby trap to use against them.
  • Villain Has a Point:
    • Paula makes a good point on criticizing Maggie for getting pregnant during a Zombie Apocalypse, as we've seen how helpless baby Judith can be in previous episodes.
    • Also, Chelle's words to Maggie.
Chelle: You're not the good guys. You should know that.
