Recap / The Venture Bros S 6 E 3 Faking Miracles

Go To

Rusty, Billy, and White attempt to build an invention, while Monarch tries to make a good impression on his wife's co-workers.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Phantom Limb explains his invisible arm to some guests by saying he lost it in the war.
  • Arachnid Appearance and Attire: The Blue Morpho (morpho being a genus of butterflies) has many similar aesthetics to his son, the Monarch. The logo of the Monarch and Blue Morpho both resemble stylized M's that also mimic a butterflies wings, and the Morpho used a gun that fired tranquilizer darts, similar to the Monarch's gauntlets.
  • Brick Joke: The Captain points out that the hovercraft doesn't stop very well as Billy crashes into a wall. Later, as Hank uses it for pizza deliveries, he crashes it into a bush.
  • Call-Back: The girl Hank tried to rescue in "Hostile Makeover" is revealed to be Wide Wale's daughter.
  • Continuity Nod: When the nanobots perform an Orifice Invasion on Dean, he asks Brock if the New York sewers are home to Candiru.
  • Demonic Possession: Brock thinks this is happening to Dean when White and Billy mess with the nanomachines in his body.
  • Expy: As it turns out, The Monarch's father was this universe's version of The Green Hornet. (And before joining with Dr. Venture, Kano worked with him in the Bruce Lee role.)
  • Grey Goo: Billy discovers nano-machines that can change the human body.
  • Internal Reveal: The Monarch discovers his father was the Blue Morpho, an anti-hero active in the 1960s that eventually teamed up with Jonas Venture.
  • Me's a Crowd: Copycat's ability.
  • Mini-Mecha: Among the other relics of archived R&D projects, the Billy and White find a "mining suit" that is distinctly dangerous, with high-powered lasers. Rusty tells them to re-file it under "murderbot."
  • Mugged for Disguise: Copycat plays the Monarch for the idea he's going to give him proper dinner party attire, but instead, knocks him out with his own tranq darts and uses his costume to pose as the Monarch and smear his reputation against his wife.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Copycat is Dean Martin in voice and appearance. His brief Early-Bird Cameo in "All This and Gargantua-2" shows that he's also a singer.
  • Not My Lucky Day: this is not Dean's best day, from his collapse after his run with Hank and Brock to the various things that Billy and Pete do to him with the bio-bots.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Blue Morpho is clearly inspired by The Green Hornet (asian valet that uses martial arts, Cool Car, Coat, Hat, Mask costume) along with a Bat Cave-esque Elaborate Underground Base (the 1960s Batman and Green Hornet series were both produced by William Dozier).
    • Hank's exit from Wide Wale's balcony (onto his unseen hovercar) is a direct reference to Marty McFly's same maneuver in Back to the Future Part II.
    • The mining suit used by Billy throughout the episode is an obvious model off the famous Aliens loader.
  • Woman Scorned: Dr. Mrs. The Monarch is tricked by Copycat into thinking Monarch was ignoring her.
