Recap / The Unexpectables E 172

Go To

Original Airdate (Twitch): June 30, 2021.

Having received a letter from their old friend Rat that includes free tickets to the Moonkite Circus, the Unexpectables decide to attend, but end up dealing with some unexpected mayhem.

  • Absurd Phobia: Scarlet denies being afraid of clowns like a younger kid, but is notably shaken when first meeting Hofiba, to the point where Panic spoils her with candy to help comfort her. She's much more enthusiastic about Hofiba's true form.
  • All Part of the Show: When chaos inevitably occurs at the circus, it's played off as part of a performance.
  • Ascended Extra: The Unexpectables receive eight free tickets to the Moonkite Circus (one for each of the four members Rat knows of, and a guest for each), and they purchase a ninth (as Borky forgoes bringing a guest). So in addition to the main five members, they decide to take along Scarlet, Robin, Zotira, and Arlo.
  • Baby Be Mine: The chaos at the circus occurs due to Log trying to "adopt" (steal) a T-Rex egg to give to the constructs wanting to start a family.
  • The Bus Came Back: JoCat reprises his role as Rat the Bard, last seen roughly two real-world years ago.
  • Humanshifting: One of the entertainers at the circus takes on a human guise in order to be more approachable, while unveiling their true form as part of their act. It's Hofiba, who's a Copper Dragon.
  • Love at First Sight: Although the party doesn't tell if it's reciprocated, it's evident that this is the case for Hofiba towards Arlo.
  • Meaningful Name: Hofiba the clown, whose name is "fool" in Draconic. The fact that it's Draconic is just as Meaningful as the name itself.
  • Non-Ironic Clown: One of Rat's coworkers is Hofiba, a clown that, despite Scarlet's (denied) fear, is a genuinely kind and jovial fool.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Scarlet's claims that she's not a little kid afraid of clowns absolutely contradicts with how she behaves upon meeting Hofiba.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The chaos of the episode's second half would never had occurred if Log had been directed to an adoption agency instead of trying to "adopt" (steal) a T-Rex egg from the circus.
