Recap / The Office USS 5 E 18 Blood Drive

Go To

Valentine's Day Episode. Michael is still pining for Holly. The business park is holding a blood drive, and as Michael gives blood he has a pleasant conversation with a pretty woman donating blood at the same time, but he passes out and when he wakes up, she's gone, leaving only her glove. He hastily puts together a singles mixer for the business park in hopes that she'll show up. Jim and Pam go out for lunch with Phyllis and Bob Vance.

Tropes:

  • Call-Back: A Bait-and-Switch example. Angela talks about two men dueling over her, which everyone assumes is Dwight and Andy in "The Duel", but it turns out it was an entirely different set of men back when she lived in Ohio.
  • Celebrity Paradox: Kelly apparently has seen Enchanted, but it's not known if she noticed that Giselle had a remarkable resemblance to Jim's old girlfriend Katy.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: In the Cold Open, Pam insists machines, such as the new phone system, can't replace her completely because she also leaves out candy for people. Then she remembers vending machines do that.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: Jim and Pam are puzzled when Bob and Phyllis disappear from the restaurant table for over ten minutes. It turns out they went off to have sex in a restroom.note
  • The Malaproper: Michael talks about Cupid and his "sparrow".
  • No Name Given: We never find out the name of the blood drive woman.
  • Shipper on Deck: Michael immediately tries to set up Lynn with Kevin when she walks in for the mixer.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Take Our Word for It: Whatever activity Jim and Pam could hear the Vances engaging in through the restroom door, it made them ultra-uncomfortable.
  • Thinks Like a Romance Novel: Michael thinks some enjoyable small talk with the woman at the blood drive means she might be his soulmate, and that she'll make a grand entrance at his mixer to kindle a romance. This also applies to Kelly, who's completely thrilled and captivated when he explains the situation.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Kevin gets a new potential love interest in Lynn, a business park worker who shows up to the mixer.
  • Valentine's Day Vitriol: Michael, frustrated over being alone, is jealous of Jim and Pam, and sets up a Lonely Hearts party for the single people at the office, specifically to exclude them. Decorations include broken hearts and Cupid minus a bow and arrow.
  • Written-In Absence: Ed Helms doesn't appear, with the explanation that Andy is off alone redeeming a non-refundable honeymoon package he'd set up for himself and Angela. NBC later posted pics of Andy visiting various places on their website with the note that "the Ol' Nard Dog is doing just fine."
