Go To

Michael and Dwight join Ryan for a night out in New York. Meanwhile, the rest of the office becomes trapped in the building after staying late.

Tropes

  • An Aesop: Michael learns he's been kind of shallow in his pursuits of women, and that the first step toward building a relationship is thinking about other people. He explains it to the camera in terms of film and song titles, but that is probably what he means.
  • Badass Boast: When Pam asked Dwight, who has the master key and spare key, what would happened if he was dead, he replied "If I'm dead, you guys have been dead for weeks."
  • Call-Back: Toby says he's moving to Costa Rica, which he wanted to do in "Branch Closing."
  • The Cassandra: Creed is the only one who knows Hank's name, but he's not believed due to his infamy for Accidental Misnaming.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Ryan told Michael to tell women he (Michael) works in finance, to impress them. Michael tells them he works as a bank teller.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Dunder Mifflin Infinity included an ill-advised social networking feature, which was inevitably infiltrated by sexual predators.
  • Ethnic Menial Labor: Played With. The cleaning crew come up to the building and Jim asks Oscar to speak to them in Spanish, to which Oscar asks why he assumes they only know Spanish. Oscar tries talking to them in English... only for them to not respond, to which he asks the same thing in Spanish and they do respond.
Oscar: They happened to speak Spanish.
    Jim: Lucky us.
  • Foreshadowing: Ryan is asking all the employees to record all of their individual sales as website sales as a "temporary measure" to increase the website's legitimacy. This will end up getting him arrested for fraud in the season finale.
  • I Have This Friend: Ryan tries to pass off his drug problem to his friend Troy. Michael and Dwight do not catch on.
  • Irony: If Kevin and Andy hadn't fought to reclaim the branch's parking spaces the previous week, no one would have had their cars stuck in the lot here.
  • If You Ever Do Anything To Hurt Him: Subverted. Michael starts this speech regarding Ryan by explaining why everyone is mad at him ("I know he's the reason we have to work on Saturday"), and then derails it by listing different ways people could insult him, like his height or his ugly beard. He may or may not be doing this on purpose.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Jim finds himself agreeing with Dwight in wondering why their paper-selling website needs a social networking platform.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Jim suggests that everyone stay late so that they can finish the project without having to come in on the weekend. He forgets to tell Hank the security guard, and so they are stuck in the lobby.
  • Noodle Incident: Jim talking to David Wallace about the website at the Christmas party, which is what gets Ryan to want to destroy him.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Michael surprises Ryan at a nightclub, Ryan is happy to see him. This is the first sign that he is on drugs.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After touching Pam's knee, Toby jumps the fence and leaves.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Jim calls Hank to unlock the gate, and he seems to take his time at coming back to the office. In the meantime, the cleaning staff arrive and let everyone out. Hank finally arrives in The Stinger and sees they're all gone.
    Hank: Son of a bitch.
